my father is a municipal judge. In 2013 NM made gay marriage legal. In protest, every judge in his county stopped performing ALL marriages. Except my dad, who bought a rainbow bow tie and had me rewrite his vows to be gender-neutral. Here he 9 months later at his 80th ceremony.
Jack Black is a celebrity. He's a movie star. He's a rock star. He oozes charisma and sex appeal and charm. It absolutely kills me that people find 100 ways to talk around this, 99 of them because he's fat.
also everyone knows the answer about "why Drew Barrymore is like that" is literally "because she had a delayed and traumatic childhood marred by addiction and neglect and then through lots of therapy and self-work has become more appreciative/aware than a regular person" right
okay so if I'm getting this right Amy Sherman-Palladino just wrapped on MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL and they cancelled Milo Ventimiglia's ABC show and Alexis Bledel quit THE HANDMAID'S TALE. So you know what that means it's time for right.
(the town my parents live in is the VERY FIRST town in NM when you drive south on I-25. So people from Colorado wanted to come down to NM to get married, of course, as it wasn't legal there yet. My father made this possible and much easier for many, many people.)
many judges had said they would just stop marrying people so my father was waiting for this. "I'm gonna be the marrying man!!" he crowed. "Hell if you can buy a bowl of marijuana in Colorado a man should be able to marry another man."
also I should note this was, like, a controversial thing at the time. People were mad my father chose to do this. One guy told him at morning coffee he was going to come and "see what you're up to" and my dad said he'd have him held in contempt if he tried to disrupt things.
(also so great and important: note he does not say that when fat people start singing/ commanding the stage people "forget" they're fat or "don't care" about it. Not the case, not possible, not the point. They're just fat AND cool at the same time and EVERYONE KNOWS AND SEES IT.
@MadelineRae23
The homophobes in town harassed him at coffee in the morning and said "We're gonna get you a pink robe!" and he said I LOOK GREAT IN PINK.
(what that meant in the 1990s was that my parents taught me that queer people were human beings worthy of being treated the exact same as everyone else, which was quite radical at the time lol.)
Someone at Disney+ should probably sit down with Bette Midler because I don't know who the fuck they think the audience for HOCUS POCUS 2 is but ... uhhh they're losing tons of interest and positive buzz real fucking fast and no TERFy trash is gonna show up to replace.
Muted this but I love Jack Black, fat people are rad, seeing fat people be loud, joyous, and successful will never stop beyond radical and important and of you want to "ummm actually" about any of that, why don't you get fucked.
Me, a fat person: I love that Jack Black is fat, like me, it's amazing to see that representations!
A not fat stranger in my mentions: you shouldn't reduce people to their bodies just because it makes you feel better about yourself
Me:
my father married one of my close high school friends to her girlfriend, they came from CO specifically for this. (unfortunately it didn't last) All my queer high school friends were like "oh yeah that makes sense, your parents were always the "cool" ones about it."
she went into therapy at 13, spent time committed and was emancipated and living on her own at 15. So yeah. I must assume that making it to 47 with your own talk show, cosmetic line, production company, a celebrated movie career, and two happy kids makes you a little joyus.
one of my 7th graders just brought back a book and said "I realized I didn't like scary books," as they checked out a happy romance. And, yet again, this is why WE TRUST STUDENTS WITH THEIR OWN READING CHOICES. I cannot stress enough that kids GET this.
Great this is gonna be the new HOT COFFEE. He wasn't fired over not liking the party, he was fired after they called him in and gave him ANOTHER panic attack and said he was "stealing his co-workers'" joy and "being a little girl." over it. Much more to the story!
He asked a manager not to throw him a birthday party because he had an anxiety disorder. When other employees planned a celebration, the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
Now, a jury has awarded him $450,000 for lost wages and emotional distress.
I'm surely not the only one who poured over every detail in LITTLE GIRL LOST, right. Right?
Anyway when you've been through a lot of shit sometimes, just sometimes, joy can be smaller and easier to grasp and I am so glad for Drew Barrymore she is one of those lucky people.
I've seen so many truly off the wall responses to this whole thing but one of my favorites has been from parents insisting no one would just leave their kids at a library or no one expects the librarians to be babysitters.
Anyway if someone survived parental neglect, being drugged by "friends" at clubs Studio 54 when you're A CHILD, and an early adulthood where people treated you like you were a bimbo because, like, you were happy on talk shows hell yeah you deserve a little happiness in the rain.
(and for anyone who is like NO ONE SAYS BAD THINGS ABOUT JACK BLACK!! SHE'S LYING! 1. they DO say shitty things about him and 2. I literally tweeted because of a tweet with 9k RTs talking about how JB isn't a "celebrity" but a character actor and it pissed me off.)
the best part of this is how the OP and others in replies etc. are lecturing librarians about how dumb they are because this could and should TOTALLY work and how if they really cared they would put free trampoline parks right in the middle of the childen's section.
I am once again begging the city to open indoor playgrounds at public libraries. My child needs somewhere to burn off energy without getting frostbite, and all the private indoor trampoline parks and such are SO expensive.
Had to mute this because y'all are a bunch of assholes. I'M AWARE SHE'S RICH AND MONEY MAKES YOUR LIFE EASIER. I'M SORRY I WROTE IT IN A "TONE" YOU, ABSOLUTE FUCKING STRANGER, FOUND UNAPPEALING. maybe YOU should get a hobby. Anyway let's all just enjoy Drew Barrymore lovin' life!
A huge thank you to every public librarian out there putting up a pride display today, putting up posters and rainbows and tons of beautiful books by queer authors front and center face out. In this climate of hatred and persecution, you're doing a hard thing. And the right one.
@insatiable_
@DebbyRyan
See you're doing a lot of responding to this thread! So just let me tell you how disgusting and disappointing this is. Way to perpetuate fat hate and stereotypes about fat life for teens. You must be so proud of that fat suit. Where's my cute .gif response?
Raise a glass, the scores are back! I completed my teacher education preparation program and I passed both my PRAXIS exams 😭 so I'm finally an officially licensed to teacher with a library media specialist endorsement. I did it. Salute!
today one of my favorite 7th graders asked for "books where kids have adventures over the summer" and "books where girls are told things they can't do but then they DO them" and some days you just have the best job you know.
@AveryOfBirds
@anthrocultur
He ABSOLUTELY wanted to turn our town into a gay marriage hot spot and wanted to get the hotels to offer vacation packages to couples from AZ, CO, and TX. "Hell let's show them they're welcome AND we'll take their money!"
I dunno man I feel like I've seen and been through a lot in 14 years of professional librarianship. But saying NEW KID is teaching "critical race theory" (what?) and then having the school district cave and uninvite a Newbery winner... that is darkest timelime shit.
this is NOT a conspiracy theory and every librarian knows it's true - they hate the spaces, they hate the community, they hate that it's free. And as they've collapsed social services, libraries do even MORE and the fascists hate that too, because they want it ALL gone.
My conspiracy theory is that fascists actually don’t give a hoot about “inappropriate” content in books; they’re attacking libraries and librarians because libraries are vital spaces that foster community. And fascists fear community. It’s a scheme to shut down public libraries.
and yeah! To all the people lecturing in my mentions on how this tweet "fetishizes" fat people ... why don't you read the anthology I edited by 30 fat people and come back for a real convo? Get it!!
anyway we have this joke in my family that we have a family motto: you can't just let people get away with things. Which makes me unbearable sometimes, I know, and has played out in many ways in my life (and in the lives of my family) but it basically means: do what's right.
Lorelai gets to experience what it's like when your child becomes the parent. Rory goes back to teach full time at Chilton. Jess ... Jess. Well, you know what Jess does.
one of my favorite holiday traditions is when thin people hop on here to tell us for some reason they just can't put their finger on they are repulsed by Jack Black in THE HOLIDAY and it's SO not believable he could get with Kate Winslet. Hmmm! Real headscratcher!
sometimes i feel like i have watched different movies than other people but it’s really just that i am able to find fat people hot when they’re being hot
In case you're wondering how fast this escalated, now this library board has just decided no LGBTQIA+ material AT ALL in the children's section. Not a display, not programming. Just pull all the materials. See the end goal?
IT SUCKED IN FRIENDS TOO, DEBBY!! I love this shit.
"Why weren't y'all mad about -"
WE WERE! YOU JUST WEREN'T LISTENING AND YOU JUST DIDN'T CARE. NOT OUR FAULT.
HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAH SWEET MOTHER OF CATS THIS FUCKING RULES.
Hello everyone this means
1. NM went COMPLETELY blue, top to bottom.
2. They called this incorrectly last night and absentee ballots changed the call.
3. Pence came here to try to win this FOR NOTHING.
There are so few YA books by Pacific Islander authors I was excited for this one. But I had no idea how entirely it was going to suck me in. An absolute stunner from Makiia Lucier. Seadragons!! Living, magical tattoos! A strong, smart girl and a prince in a matriarchal society!
A White woman got up and told Tommy Orange how DEVASTATED she was by THERE, THERE and he shrugged and said his Native readers tell him they find it hopeful and exciting and told her White people look at through a White gaze and this. is. the. greatest. answer. ever.
Huge shout out to the random librarian I stole the idea of cutting up Dollar Tree bulletin board borders into bookmarks. I finally found some not baby-ish ones and my middle schoolers loooveee them. You can get 36 bookmarks for $1.25.
I know none of the "children's librarians hate children because they don't have trampoline parks" people care about what it's actually like to work in one of these spaces, but why not listen to a person who actually knows?
All right, here we go. I worked in youth services at one of the libraries listed here for 8 years, and while it's a lovely library run by lovely people and I was really proud of the work I did while I was there, the slide was the absolute BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. Here's why:
I think the Spotify audiobooks thing is silly but when peo are like YOU CAN GET EVERYTHING FREE AT YOUR LIBRARY like no you can't ? We should be honest about that. Libraries have limited digital budgets! They simply can't buy everything or give everyone simultaneous access.
Please stop saying THE PRINCESS BRIDE in
#TheFilmWasBetter
- the same dude wrote them both and he knew EXACTLY what he was doing. The book version is more satirical than the movie but they have the same key element: they're about how we tell and frame stories to sustain us.
here is what I mean:
+ know what you have in your collection, get familiar with it. They are passing around lists of what to make up outrage about, know it before they do.
+ what is your collection development policy? Print it out, put it on your website. KNOW IT BACK AND FORTH.
"I wasnt being TERFy!!! I was just saying how much I loved this super TERFy article you all need to read about how trans women are the real enemy." might not be the hot take you think it is!!!!
Time for some big personal news. I've got a temporary job. Starting Wednesday (so soon) I'm going to be the long-term K-6 substitute librarian in the very small school district in my hometown.
And I'm asking for your help.
SEVEN LONG YEARS AND AT LAST AT FUCKING LAST. OH MY GOD THE RELIEF, THE JOY. FIRST FEMALE LATINX GOVERNOR IN THE USA. NEW MEXICO WE DID THAT WE FUCKING DID THAT.
Nina Zenik is fat. That was a cool fun thing in the Grishaverse. The people making the SHADOW & BONE show KNEW this & saw fat actresses for the part. (I know this because I've heard from at least one.) Then they decided they didn't care and neither would the audience. *I* care.
You're not a librarian? You need to get ready too and here's what you can do:
+ TOMORROW contact your local public library and your children's school library (IF you have children) and let them know how much you support them and their efforts at representing ALL our kids.
so as most of you know, this year I am teaching an elective called Recreational Reading instead of Makerspace. It is as the name suggests, we sit around and read. No tests, no homework, no book reports and they can read WHATEVER they want.
you almost have to admire this man's single minded focus on continuing to make absolutely dreadful "action" movies like EXTRACTION when he was BORN to do gentle, charming comedy.
+ talk with your supervisors TOMORROW about what you will do WHEN you get complaints. Ask what their plans on how to handle it are. Ask for a script. You are the supervisor? Get to working on that, prepare your frontline staff for challenges.
Here's what Molly and others in this thread won't tell you. Directly from a Philly librarian. But then it's not like any of them want to actually listen to the people who work in libraries, right?
my mother watches TED Talks every night before bed. Tonight she listened to one she REALLY loved. She asked me if I had ever heard of a writer named
@JasonReynolds83
because, honestly, she thought he was going places. I told her I had to agree.
Also this means that New Mexico becomes the FIRST STATE EVER to send a full delegation of Indigenous people and people of color to represent us in the House.
And also books. I'm just. I'm just tired of "libraries are more than books" yeah sure but WE ALSO HAVE BOOKS, lots of them, more than anyone could afford, and providing them is a core service that is an equity issue and one of the things that makes the fascists maddest.
Regular reminder that libraries are much more than just books—although that would be valuable in itself. Libraries provide research databases, games, classes, clubs, movie screenings and a hundred other services.
Working remotely was the best physical time of my life, I cooked more regularly, I had a better sleep schedule, I consciously moved more during the day, I had more energy after workv to do more. I miss it every day. Anyone who tells you differently is lying. 🤷♀️
And now, some sad personal news.
I have resigned from the State Library of Iowa, effective August 10th. It genuinely breaks my heart to do this and I do not currently have other employment (hey, are you hiring? Let me know! Publishing too, not just libraries lol.)
Also we knew what your TERF'tastic tweet was about, Bette! Because Pamela Paul's mission to use the op-ed page of the "paper of record" to spread anger and hatred against trans people to cis "allies" just like you has been very clearly telegraphed! We saw you prove its working!
@misskubelik
He did the most amazing thing for us that day. When nobody else in our families accepted us, he did, he showed up to the court house even though he'd just left for the day.
We drove from Denver straight down and we were so worried when they'd told us that he wasn't there.
I don't know how to tell everyone but - librarians are actually not usually quiet and we don't really do the shushing anymore and many of us are very LOUD with BIG voices has anyone mentioned this to publishing.
@dancingofpens
The harder everyone involved with this show tries to gaslight me about it the more convinced I am I'M RIGHT AND THEY'RE WRONG honestly though it's baffling
@AmyDesigns
He's done so many! I think he's still tracking them. The other judges gave in when it became legal nationwide. He's very smarmy about that "everyone pretending they always were on board, hmmpff!"
+ PRACTICE THE SCRIPT, say that shit out-loud, write it down on little cards you can hand out. Imagine they're recording you with the fervent hope that they can corner you and get it to go viral and practice not letting them get any good footage.
"Ramona did not think she was a pest. No matter what others said, she never thought she was a pest. The people who called her a pest were always bigger and so they could be unfair." - Beverly Cleary
Happy 103rd birthday to this legend.
6th grader: I've read every mythology book you have and I don't know what to read next.
me: So. Uh. Have you ever heard of a series called PERCY JACKSON.
6th grader: nope.
me: (keep it cool, just keep it cool.) OK so...

And listen, you can literally call up your public library tomorrow and be like I LOVE THAT YOU HAVE TONS OF BOOKS ABOUT QUEER KIDS!!! HOW CAN I SUPPORT YOU!! it is an immediate, short-term action. But this is long-term work to keep an eye on. Time to pay attention.
I wear a mask in public for lots of reasons but a big one is that a handful of my students still mask for THEIR own reasons and, plain and simple, I want to be an ally for them so they know they're not alone.
#MaskUpC19
I wear a mask in public because Covid is NOT mild, it’s a dangerous level 3 pathogen, and we are still in an active pandemic. I want masking in public spaces, especially hospitals, so if you agree, show me your mask in comments, copy this and let’s see who’s out there.
#MaskUpC19
today one of my Native students, their arms loaded with books, told me "Ms. Angie there's just TOO MANY books by Native authors I want to read all at once." and man I know we've got work to do but in this moment I felt like I could see the future and it was so bright.
+ If you don't have a collection development policy that requires any challenges to be put into writing, well, I'd look into making those changes. Who controls the money at your library? A board? Local government? Time to get cozy with them and get them prepared too.
White people: don't expect Black people do any god damn work for you, ever but especially today. Stop asking what to do or read or think. FIGURE IT OUT. You have the tools and the emotional bandwidth. Do it! If you can't, for once just shut the fuck up and bear witness.
+Ask them who needs to hear this support and how you can get it registered. Can you write a letter to your local news source? Can you attend a public meeting and voice your support there? What do they need from you, a supportive member of the public who uses the library.
PLEASE PUBLISHING I AM FUCKING BEGGING YOU PLEASE can you just take, like, six months off publishing Mr. Rogers picture book bios? Please. Hand to God, we have enough. Please. Can you buy one from Black creators about Levar Burton instead?
worth mentioning that ableism ruined this moment and letting an 83 year old man access a ceremony during a pandemic on terms he felt comfortable with was consciously denied. Denial of accessibility caused producers to get the exact ending they deserved.
I can confirm Anthony Hopkins offered to Zoom into the ceremony and Oscar producers turned him down... but another rumor said Olivia Colman was ready to accept for him, which as near as I can determine isn't true. She's busy shooting a movie and only showed up for her category.
PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU FOR MORE MIDDLE GRADE SPORTS BOOKS WITH GIRLS PLAYING SPORTS. I'm begging here. WNBA! SOFTBALL! VOLLEYBALL! This is a huge untapped market. We got a bunch of soccer books for a bit, a few gymnastics but. There's room for so much more.
@insatiable_
@DebbyRyan
you have a chance to make creative, engaging, original content from fat people about fat people's lives and you choose to ... put a skinny person in a fat suit and make jokes about how sad her life is and about what a crazy bitch she turns into. That's so lazy and pathetic.
