A driver almost hit my husband in a crosswalk today & then they walked into a shop at the same time. My husband said, "You almost hit me back there," & the driver screamed at him, followed him around the store, & threatened to call the cops. Why do cars make people like this?

I am once again begging the city to open indoor playgrounds at public libraries. My child needs somewhere to burn off energy without getting frostbite, and all the private indoor trampoline parks and such are SO expensive.

@andreagrimes If your parent requires 24/7 care and you are unable to provide it, there are 2 and only 2 options: 1) a live-in care facility; or 2) hire home aides. Unpaid labor from your extended family with caretaking commitments of their own is not on the list.

Women are more likely to take transit than men. Women are more likely to walk to work than men. Women drive less than men. Men cause more fatal car crashes than women, but women are more likely to be injured or killed in a crash. Safe streets advocacy is feminist advocacy.

It’s no coincidence that young men are some of the biggest advocates of killing off the car industry. They’re mostly fit and healthy; they can’t envisage otherwise. They can’t imagine being a mum carting around children nor the woman trying to get home without a taxi at night.

2 weeks ago, I took a train 360 miles from Bordeaux to Paris. There are about 20 trains a day to choose from. It takes 2 hours. This weekend, I drove 280 miles from Chicago to Detroit. It takes 5 hours. There are 2 trains a day to choose from. Both take longer than driving. 😩

I rode my bike to the Beyoncé concert at Soldier Field last night, and I'll never go to Soldier Field any other way. Beyoncé finished her show at midnight on the dot, and I was home in Lincoln Park at 12:38.

Imagine if, as a driver, roads often ended suddenly and you were expected to share space with freight trains. Imagine it did this at every single intersection and also the freight trains routinely jumped their tracks. This is what it's like riding a bike in most of North America.

I hope that the defeat of Bring Chicago Home will be a wake-up call for Mayor Johnson’s administration. I want him to succeed, but he and his team are not putting in the work to show that they’re trustworthy and competent. This was a big chance to do that, and they blew it.

This is one of the things I find most frustrating about conversations around safe streets w/my neighbors. They'll pay for private security and talk about how scared they feel, but they don't even register cars as the main threat they face every day. It's invisible to most people.

We really do need classes on crowded train etiquette for young professionals who commute on the brown line. We left tons of people on the platform in freezing weather with 10 min headways bc everyone refuses to sit in empty seats or move to the middle.

I got close-passed less than a foot away from my bike with my 2-year-old on the back on the way home from the grocery store, all so the guy could get to a red light 3 seconds faster. I really don’t think drivers understand how terrifying that feels.

How do we get drivers to stop doing this every single evening? They’re lined up, waiting for the light at the next intersection to turn green. Nobody ever stays behind the stop bar til the intersection is clear; they just pile into the intersection and across the crosswalks.
