I know none of the "children's librarians hate children because they don't have trampoline parks" people care about what it's actually like to work in one of these spaces, but why not listen to a person who actually knows?
All right, here we go. I worked in youth services at one of the libraries listed here for 8 years, and while it's a lovely library run by lovely people and I was really proud of the work I did while I was there, the slide was the absolute BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. Here's why:
Also let me ASSURE you the first time Ms. Molly's precious and perfect son Konner touched some, say, shit on the slide ... well she would not be so happy about the space then.
@EldenRay
Librarians: desperately trying to explain the situation and stressors of our work.
The entire internet: why are you being such unfun bitches about this
@misskubelik
Thank you, I said this on another thread but, I had a mom recently ask me for a WWII book for her kid that didn’t have any death in it. Like y’all want me to be able to answer these questions and monitor kids on a fucking rock wall at the same time?
@misskubelik
My library has a water fountain at the entrance of our children's area and has a stool next to it. I can't tell you how many times I have had to run from the reference desk to catch a kid falling off the stool because their adult wasn't paying attention to them.
@misskubelik
I have yet to see an actual librarian endorse her idea. Not saying we don’t need public access places for young kids, we totally do. But not the LIBRARY. OP does not want to hear it, and doubled down today 😂
@misskubelik
Safe well maintained indoor playgrounds are nice to have but I’d think it’s common sense that it should ideally be somewhat separated from reading books especially when more intensive activities are involved
@misskubelik
Absolutely wild that twitter moms have decided it's either "Librarians should become playground monitors" or "Librarians hate children" without anything in between.
@misskubelik
Also boggles the mind considering libraries are meant to be a quiet place? These asks aren’t exactly designed to be quietly played on and just feels like if one wishes to have play structures, there should a playground nearby? Just seems silly to add this to librarians’ plates.
