We FORGOT because teachers have been judged/forced to conform as if researching, developing & using ones own professional knowledge IN the job is unimportant. Politicians assumed their privileged childhoods & simple outlooks qualified them to guide education in every detail! 🤔
I left school at 16 without any qualifications. I now have a degree, a masters degree and I'm a qualified teacher. I'm also a chartered psychologist. Wouldn't have been able to do this without the Open University.

Interesting article: QUOTE: "Research shows that promoting mental health and well-being in schools, on a par with core skills such as maths and literacy, has a positive impact on the self-esteem, academic achievement, social relations, motivation and career prospects of pupils."
This is a sad thread.... good teachers and good TAs, please listen to good parents... you will find out they often understand their children's problems, appreciate yours in your job and can help you improve your practice.
Our son has no mobility needs. They used foot sandals to tie his feet to a chair, placed a table on top, used a lap-bet to tie him to the chair. They held his hand to the table as he was distressed! This was false imprisonment of our disabled son & he couldn’t tell us

It depends what the concept of 'cognitive' means to teachers & how they are required/able to interpret it in practice. IMO you can't separate the emotional & social-they are always involved in cognition & all human activity-well used by good courses/teachers & badly by poor ones
Is one of the problems about using cognitive science in schools that it has become something that focuses only on the cognitive? It misses the other two dimensions Of Knud Illeris' synthesis of learning - the emotional and the social.

Yes indeed and I strongly recommend his book with David Wengrow published after his sadly premature death in 2020 - The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity 2021

As EY practitioners, we know that child-centred practice is what matters. Despite the pressures for more ′school like′ learning in the Early Years, EY professionals and practitioners continue to advocate for child-led best practice in settings.

This is a sad & revealing thread. IMO this issue needs action research data by EdLeaders & teachers. Creative value-based 'psycho-social' models are needed to solve system problems, improve teaching, efficiency, quality & retention-teachers can do it, but governments must LISTEN!

My overwhelming message from visiting Finnish Education experts this week? Trust teachers, don’t use education as a political football, stop obsessing over measurement and inspection, and teach kids HOW to learn not WHAT to learn. That’s how they cracked it.

It is not stealing if ideas/statements are credited with proper referencing to the author. This involves crafting your own writing to progress your own original (to you) discussion & not thoughtlessly lifting chunks of another author's text-this is your learning process
@PhDVoice
The Finnish aim to inspire their system with the principle that everybody is valued, regardless of ability, to develop & improve in different ways to be their best. Teachers are asked to interpret the curriculum to promote students own personal identity as part of the job.

It seems a great pity that the Ofsted framework has not been updated sufficiently to take account of the qualitative evidence of teachers, children & parents. Your old article is evidence that they still fail to understand & properly inform, assess & guide schools & colleges.
"Be a lady they said. Don’t talk too loud. Don’t talk too much. Don’t be intimidating. Why are you so miserable? Don’t be a bitch. Don't be so bossy. Don’t be so emotional. Don’t cry. Don’t yell. Don’t swear. Endure the pain. Don’t complain."

This is great and down to 10 years of hard work, which is a 'get real' approach - it takes time and persistence to build a community for long term gains-so much better than shallow 'quick fixit' mindsets.
