This is Mo. He arrived in Manchester in 2016 from Syria without his parents, speaking little English. His dream to be a pilot. By 2018 he was our Head Boy
@MEAcad
and he visited me today to tell me that in Sept he’s off to Uni to study aviation. Calls me his mentor. He’s my hero.
THIS is how you say goodbye to the children who are temporarily not in your school. You show your appreciation and treat them like superstars. This is the
@McrAcademy
way. Keep making magic everyone until we reunite.
@UnitedLearning
Imagine a school where standards have collapsed, behaviour is unsafe and staff morale is zero. For the good of the children, leadership is removed and interim leaders are brought in. Then there’s a staff meeting where the new leadership is announced and it’s the previous head.
Sir are we closing?
No.
Sir is there a message on Facebook from you saying the school’s shutting?
No, not on Facebook.
Sir is there a Y7 pupil in reception with Coronavirus?
No, he’s going to the dentist.
Sir, do you speak to Boris Johnson about shutting the school?
And repeat.
Year 10 break duty and the football goes over the high fence into the park. A lovely elderly lady is walking past and offers to throw the ball over but says she’s not much of an athlete. Her first two throws miss & the tension is high. The boys begin to cheer her every throw.
Y10 pupil at lunch ‘you sorted the school out yet Sir?’.
Me: ‘Not quite! Do you think it’s improving?’
Pupil: ‘Definitely.... Don’t get smug though’.
#lifecoaching
The Headteacher of my children’s school has written to parents to say she is leaving this year, after a very dispiriting inspection. She has completely transformed the school & its outcomes in 4 years. A brilliant Head.Fellow parents asking me what they can do. Talent lost. Rage.
After 5 misses the tension is unbearable and I am riddled with guilt - although the boys are offering the sort of energy which fans use to win penalty shoot outs. Hamza shouts ‘go on Miss, believe in yourself’. The final throw arcs up … hits the fence. The boys applaud. Lovely.
After GCSE Chemistry. Student looked flat.
I ask ’how did it go?’.
He mumbled ‘it was tough’.
His friend cane over and put his arm around him. I think ‘what a nice friend’.
But the friend then says ‘mate, thank you for lowering the grade boundaries’.
Everyone fell about.
I want to pay tribute to the brave staff who stood by me on lunch duties today. Bitter wind & hail stones like acidic popping candy bouncing off your face. We stood, we shivered, we marvelled at how teenagers were oblivious to the storm & we whooped a victorious cheer on the bell
Today is the anniversary of schools shutting for the first lockdown.
What the education sector learnt, delivered, improved, innovated, collaborated & coped with during the last 12 months is extraordinary.
To colleagues who walked this year with me, you’ve been extraordinary.
Would it have cost that much more to add 2 more drops of test liquid to the Lateral Flow Test capsules? So many times I tip up the test tube and there’s nothing there. Vanished. Dried up. Gone. Flow Rage.
Really proud to explain to the Prince of Wales the
@McrAcademy
story and our commitment to his work in the community. Real ambition and dedication in the room. It was great to explain our journey and how amazing our students are. Moss Side Magic!
@UnitedLearning
My son got his GCSEs today and smashed it. And I can’t keep it together and am welling up at every photo memory that is popping up. His school was transformed by a superb head and inspiring teachers. What the day job is all about. I hope we can make every family feel this proud.
I know these tweets can be annoying but in this case I don’t care. Our students, staff, community & Trust have worked so hard to achieve this improvement, against the backdrop of the past few years. Our families now have the Good local school they deserve.
Loading up the van - the generosity of donations is amazing. Moss Side delivering Manchester Magic inspired by
@MarcusRashford
Our prefects organised the collection and are now providing the muscle to deliver the food. This will take several trips! Tough times but moving kindness
Headteacher Mindfulness.
Walking around your school seeing 1100 students working hard and feeling the buzz of learning.
40 nationalities, 63 languages- the world comes to Moss Side and Makes Manchester Magic. Everyday.
Yesterday whilst kids and I swimming in the sea, my daughter sees a lady stealing her Crocs. We scream at my wife who’s led by our stuff but she can’t hear us and thinks we’re in trouble in sea. I run out of sea and my wife chases lady, who is wearing Crocs. It gets weirder…
This year seen the run up to GCSEs as a parent as well as a Head. It is a LONG run in for the students. Stamina needed is immense. Anyone wanting to patronise young people as fragile should explore the resilience they demonstrate to prepare for a long exam season. Future’s safe.
Good luck to everyone in schools. Pull together, keep well and ensure as many children as possible are smiling, learning and supported by kind & calm routines. A generation of children will never forget you and one day will tell of your compassion and bravery. Thanks in advance.
To Heads still in the midst of tough, pandemic leadership, ignore headlines and press this morning. You’re amazing and have sustained this excellence relentlessly. Have a cake breakfast this morning.
Weekend after an Ofsted inspection:
- awake at 5 trying to remember how many AP providers we use
- forget the word for toothbrush in Superdrug
- well up in barbershop mentally compiling a montage of amazing moments
- bored disdain on my children’s faces as I relive feedback
We all knew it was likely that we would have to continue COVID testing in schools in September. But hearing it confirmed on a wet Monday, in the midst of the powerful third wave of the pandemic has made me eat my own body weight in Midget Gems.
Everyone at Manchester Academy is devastated to learn that one of our ex-students has tragically died in a car accident and that another ex-student is critically ill following the crash. We all send the families our love and prayers at this horrendous time.
We only went and won it!!! For all our students, staff, families and everyone in Moss Side. This is for you. You’re magic and I am very lucky.
@McrAcademy
@UnitedLearning
Waiting over 72 hours for my daughter’s COVID test results. Whole house on tenterhooks. Unable to plan. Friend sends me story about 10 mins testing in Germany. You know when you visit a good school and steal a policy...couldn’t we have saved £12 billion and knicked their testing?
Holiday Bends. A guide for partners and friends of teachers. Divers who come up to the surface too quickly can develop ‘the bends’: a potentially fatal condition. The start of a holiday is the same for teachers. We are excited and relieved to be off but we have to emerge slowly.
Coming home to my amazing wife making scrubs for the NHS. She’s made loads and bags for them to go in once worn. Might also get a personalised, designer set to enliven my Skype for Business outfits! So proud of her efforts on top of running her business. Superstar x 😘
Spoken to 6 heads over past fortnight, all struggling with current times & pressures. All good leaders, just worn by the attrition of the past two years. Also been privileged to see the brilliant work
@Headrest_UK
do to support Heads. If you’re feeling low or alone, contact them.
This morning we have received some shocking news that a much loved member of our English Department, Jacqui Close, has passed away. Generations of local children have been taught by Ms Close and today Manchester Academy is devastated by this sudden loss. Much love to her family.
Tonight when I looked around, there were legions of staff helping out. Staying around late to assist, supporting a student in crisis with love and compassion. We turned away staff volunteering to muck in. As Manchester once again deals with high COVID, this team keep making magic
As we approach lady, she gives back Crocs without any apology and scurries off. We all congregate stunned at the blatant and bizarre crime. Family on beach tell us she lives in huge house, and steals shoes regularly. Show me this at entrance. Surely this is
@StephenKing
novel?
This is my 10th year of Headship, serving two brilliant communities but this present is tough. Heads need good listeners and top teams. Even then this is potentially insomnia inducing. Adore this job, to do it well you have to be able to stand back. Not easy. Keep well people.
We had to cancel our in-school Y11 Prom today, due to this miserable virus. Student emailed enquiring with she should return her prom dress. Heartbreaking. This Cinderella generation will eventually go to the ball, and the party will be amazing.
In contact with lots of Manchester Heads over last couple of days. All wrestling again with COVID and it’s vines which are again constricting operation and preventing some bright spots of the school calendar. It’s been an almost infinite year for Heads. Huge respect to them all.
Student Voice with Y10 on the yard:
Me: What extra-curricular activity do you want?
Y10: cage fighting!?!?
Me: within the realms of reality
Y10: a gym? Dead expensive to be a gym member.
Me: really?
Y10: definitely but bet you can’t do this…
Me today in the new MA gym.
Magic.
Over a lunch time, a colleague & I chatted to a group of our students who are asylum seekers. As they told us their stories about getting to UK we both welled up at their courage. In an English mock exam one of these students wrote ‘MA is now my family’. This broke us again. 1/2
Last school week of the decade. Most of which I have spent in headship. To those still in the hot seat, a round of applause as it’s not got easier. It’s also no less exhilarating and enjoyable. But it is tougher and has changed significantly. Headteachers who survived - much love
Manchester Academy.
60 nationalities.
40 languages.
Many families escaped from horrific conflict to come to the UK.
The whole world comes to our school to learn everyday. We learn from their stories and their experiences. All welcome. All celebrated. Amazing young people. Magic.
Three things clear already from student return:
1) students need teachers. Online is necessary & we have worked wonders but face to face is so vital
2) Academic vocabulary hasn’t been used for some time, student confidence in using it is fragile.
3) Students are so sharp & funny.
‘Your work to galvanise a diverse community, in order to keep pupils safe is striking’
‘Some pupils said that Manchester Academy is their ‘sanctuary’’
Many wonderful comments in our new Ofsted report. But these two make me so proud & emotional. Everyone at
@McrAcademy
👏👏👏
If you’re new to a school, especially a leadership post, remember how tough year 1 is. Amazing the difference in year 2. The students greet you with warmth, you’ve been through storms with the staff and there’s a team energy & you know most of the room numbers. Hang in there!
Used to be virulently anti-dog. Truly had no idea what the appeal was. This morning gearing up to read the new schools guidance, their joyous energy and love is so calming. As it has been throughout the crisis. I am staggered how wrong I was & going to miss these two next week.
Desperately sad to hear that a school that needed a great head is losing one but strong leaders who will take on the risks of complex school leadership are increasingly rare:
@drewpovey
will be back and I think a lot of schools will want to snap him up. No comfort to the children
Two years ago I was the Chair of Manchester High Heads - the way that school leaders and staff dealt with the complexity and trauma of the Arena attack was incredible. Compassionate, inclusive and resolute. Despite high tension and much pain, schools led the city’s children. 🐝
School improvement happens in millimetres- days of building and crafting. Yet sometimes you get moments when it’s crystal clear how good your staff and students are. Inspection has provided this lens this week. Being part of our journey is exhilarating and a huge privilege. Magic
The Eldon 5. My mentoring group for Y11 - received emails every time they were stars… or otherwise! By hook and by crook they’ve all made it and were great sports in our Y11 roast!! Final Y11 assembly today was really moving - they started with me, a memorable group of leaders.
An amazing
@McrAcademy
student came to see me last night. He achieved A*AA in his A’levels but couldn’t get a place on medicine because of lack of work experience. This seems a punitive barrier for our students. Anyone know how he can get medical work experience in Manchester?
Nearly finished my 10th year of being a Manchester Headteacher. So lucky to have worked for two amazing communities in Wythenshawe and Moss Side. I have tried to put my heart and soul into the job - and, as this article confirms, my dark hair!
There’s always been a dissonance between those on the ground in schools and those who comment on education from a far. Never has that distance been bigger than in current times. In every chat I have with another Head there’s an immediate bond and a camaraderie. I admire them all.
Have known
@drewpovey
simce he was a charismatic PE teacher. Don’t know the full story but am appalled that the story has been leaked. Should be a process to protect reputation- Drew’s always champions the little people.
Deserves full protection whilst investigation takes place.
Last year. After lockdown when the then Y10s came back into the Academy in their tightly managed bubbles of 10 so classes could be 2m distanced. We were all emotional but nervous. Students coped brilliantly. Tomorrow this historic year group deserve all the medals. Good luck Y11.
Last day of half-term tomorrow. I want to thank my hi-vis jacket for standing by me through 3 hours of duties, pockets full of masks, sanitiser & Tunnocks Caramel bars. Boiling hot when the sun’s out & not quite warm enough when it’s cold. But like my staff, reliable and bright.
This year our Head/Deputy Head Girls and Boys should be fast tracked to political office to change the world. They’ve met VIPs on my behalf and been hugely influential role models. They said’ Sir, don’t add any cheesy lines’ to the tweet but they deserve the highest cheese. Stars
Some head teacher colleagues going through toughest of times due to this pandemic. Hard to hear when little one can do but offer love and support virtually. My admiration for what my contemporaries are achieving is immense. The slings and arrows of this time will not defeat us.
After the almost overwhelming offers of help for Haider’s medicine application, we worked through next steps tonight. He joined
@McrAcademy
in Y8, from a different country & is one of so many inspiring students in our community. Now he wants to give back. Moss Side Magic.
When I was the Deputy to a great Head, after we had moved the school forward, I told him ‘You don’t enjoy your school enough’. He was restless to improve which was inspiring but he didn’t stop & breathe in the change enough to lift the soul. Did this period 5 today. It was magic.
Every Head reading email at 8 o’clock at night:
‘We got 4 staff in,
But 4 staff out,
In, Out, In, Out,
The plague’s still about,
Do the Covid Cokey,
And supply’s all gone.
Normal’s not about’.
I actually hummed all day, ‘ohhhhhh, The Covid Cokey’.
On repeat!
This has been one of the most momentous weeks of my career when a unique & special group of staff and students delivered something very special after ‘the visit’. Been such an emotional culmination to our incredible journey.
@McrAcademy
confirming Moss Side’s magic. Teary all day
Transforming schools demands great teaching in every classroom. Alongside energetic, committed and transformative pastoral staff. Never will our pastoral teams be more in demand than in the next month. We’re so lucky with the quality of our team. To all pastoral staff, get ready!
Motivational message for the new academic year. Who better than the incredible Stormzy? Personal message to
@McrAcademy
students from a legend and we are so grateful for his generosity. Inspiring us to rise up and be superheroes. Make Manchester Magic. Everyday.
Household slightly avoiding me, sensing a far away drift in the eyes. Was overly willing to paint a shed. Walked by a close friend whilst walking the dog without noticing him. The night before exam results, the futile angst, self-recrimination & doubt. Good luck to everyone.
Student questions to me following Stormzy’s amazing address to the Academy:
- is he your mate?
- is he your next door neighbour?
- does he let you drive his cars?
- are you taller than him?
- do you do rap battles? (Over the garden fence I guess?)
All answered ‘Yes’
#superhero
Incredibly proud to host
@amanda_spielman
&
@Ofstednews
in Moss Side today. Our students represented the Academy and their communities with such passion & aspiration. In the KS3 panel, the Y7s bowed - my explanation of HMCI may not have helped! Manchester Magic Made.
@McrAcademy
During our Ofsted inspection, one of the team met this student who talked about how his English had improved. We told the inspector about his English mock and she also welled up. Don’t send these children abroad. Send them to us, they are inspiring and need our compassion.
From everyone at Manchester Academy, huge thanks to our community, our city, our Trust and the education sector for all the kindness and support we have received. The generosity offered to our amazing school has been overwhelming and we’re very grateful.
Say it loud, we’re global and proud. Beginning our new graphics around the academy. How can you not be excited by having the whole world come to your school? Humbling and invigorating. And eventually wonderfully Manc.
Magic.
Collecting son’s results this morning so clear that this generation deserve all the plaudits, two lockdowns, numerous bubble closures and online study. So all the flowers to them, which for my lad is no good as he still hasn’t got a sense of smell following COVID. Future’s bright
Education folk slightly larging up that in their schools there’s no COVID impact when they’re based in areas with minimal infection. Upgrade your empathy.
Changing the opportunities for Greater Manchester’s young people and narrating what the city needs for technical education to thrive and be valued. Real leadership from
@AndyBurnhamGM
and proud to be part of the conversation. MBacc is a huge opportunity for our students.
Hugely proud of the
@McrAcademy
student team meeting
@Keir_Starmer
today. Ayat opened the questioning and Hayden finished the event with style! In between Giorgi, Tahir and Ekemena asked lots of questions representing our students’ interests. Magic! Huge thanks to
@MENnewsdesk
So two thirds of schools have NOT have COVID cases? The regional variation in infection rates is now becoming an issue in terms of the equity of examination processes. The experiences of schools in areas with high long term infection rates must be accounted for. Different worlds.
At least one in three schools have had staff or pupils test positive for Covid-19 since the start of term, an investigation by
@JohnGRoberts
and
@tweetsbyames
has revealed
Good luck schools. You won’t need it, but you deserve it.
Ready for weird back to work nightmares tonight and waking just before 3 absolutely raring to go. Back on the block.
Message from the office, Deputy Head from your school asked if you could give him a call. Bit confused but then read the name. It was my Deputy Head from senior school. He saw my parents in a supermarket and was chuffed I’d gone into education. Called him up nervously. Amazing!
No better feeling. Families have chosen our school and trusted us with their children. Nervous parents taking photos as Y7 enter the building. Oversized blazers, new school bags and lots of excitement. What a responsibility, what a privilege.
The winning
@McrAcademy
team at the
@EducateAwards
just incredible and huge tribute to all our staff who work so hard to include our families and students. Three awards in 2023 - so proud and finishes a brilliant week for Moss Side. Need a new trophy cabinet!!!! MAGIC!
Our school has students from 60 countries & there are over 40 languages spoken. This energy is brilliant - our young people are huge assets for the future of their adopted country. I learn every day. Topics this week: Libyan driving tests, cricket in Pakistan, Somalian coffee.
That feeling at the end of a school trip where everyone has bonded around a collective journey and has been united by the camaraderie of the memories. This is every hour in schools at the moment. Every time I turned around today there was a colleague helping. Humbled and moved.
This has taken a lot of work to make happen and
@AndyBurnhamGM
persistence is to be applauded. Will make a huge difference to young people in a practical and powerful way. I hope the take up is high. Great start to the new academic year.
From today, 16-18s across Greater Manchester will be able to benefit from free bus travel as part of a two-year trial. Westminster has made young people its target for cuts; we are using devolution to reverse that.
School League Tables. Schools are ferries, delivering our precious cargo to their next port. Some ships cruise through calm seas, but others navigate turbulent currents & unexpected storms. But still safely deliver their students with a smile on their faces & success. Salute them
We farewell to the Quality of Education Guru today
@MrARogers
as he’s off to be the new head
@salehighschool
Hard to put into words his contribution to our transformation, our gratitude is large. Wish him all the best - he will be a brilliant headteacher. Dinner Queue King!!
A brilliant lad in our Autistic Resource Centre drew a picture of me on the electronic whiteboard and it’s made me laugh all day. Shame I’m smiling as I would have loved this as my passport photo.
There’s a live music venue also called Manchester Academy.
Wearing my Academy hoodie out. Guy asked ‘cool hoodie’ are they selling them to support the venue?
Me: No, it’s from my school.
Guy: Cool, they’re opening a school - like School of Rock?!
Me: yes. I am its Jack Black.
