They do realise that in hospitals prior to all this, due to years of underfunding we are already at capacity? There is no give within the NHS system. It has been decimated.
@cihalpin
It's just a constant microagression. And it gets waring. I've stopped being nice about it and curtly correct. I've earned the right to be there and am very much equal to my male colleagues. Solidarity with her. It's shit.
Reminder to all my NHS colleagues, old and new: you will not be thanked for the extra you do, only asked why you didn't do more. Look after yourself and don't give them anything of yourself for free.
@Aleexxies
Sorry you experienced that, very glad your team stood by you. NHS has zero tolerance policy, it needs to be enforced. A refusal to see a dr = refusal of care. We need to enforce this. I hope your next shift is better.
@matthew_sctt
Honestly, this stuff is tiring. It's not what they mistake me for. The fact that my male colleagues are automatically the surgeon, I've to work harder, be nicer, be clearer, explain the procedure in details, introduce myself as the surgeon multiple times and I'm still not one.
@DrJenGunter
I'm sorry this is happening to you. I've no idea why an expert speaking about their subject is so threatening for some but there's no accounting for people. Know that what you're doing is vital and appreciated. Women need to hear this. All women.
@teacheconomics
@meropemills
@JaneRemain
With all due respect. That's awful guilt crushing advice 'don't miss anything'. She's human, she will miss things, many times. There is no way around it and to pretend that is not the case is utter foolishness. I'm sorry, that is horrendous advice. I hope she does okay.
@aoifegracemoore
All this tells me, confirms for me, is that Ireland is still as patriarchal as ever. Women, children, Irish of colour, immigrants, any non-white males are all 2nd class citizens. We've learned nothing.
@Draoeu
@CameronDLWalker
I lived alone until very recently, I've worked my ass off for the NHS the entire year. I'm going nowhere because it's the right thing to do & we are overwhelmed. It's shit for all. We don't need claps we need people to think. Im sorry, her behaviour is utterly selfish. No excuses
@Jane_934
@95Shriya
My Mam started hers at 58. 61 and still plugging away as she works full time too. Never too late. I am constantly bursting with pride at what she achieves. You've got this 💪🏻
@DrBenLovell
Posted earlier, elsewhere. The last 2 sentences say it all. We shouldn't get trained in how to take punches, we need to build a system that doesn't repeatedly punch us.
@gmcuk
utterly and happily ignorant to the punches taken daily by frontline doctors.
@gavreilly
I think this is very disingenuous. Avoid gatherings. Saying people can essentially carry on and go to the pub etc is worrying. People need to limit interactions as much as possible. Please think of vulnerable people/ptns. Very poor behaviour.
@illonaduffy
@cihalpin
It doesn't matter. I'm in a speciality that I'm very much the minority and it's infuriating and waring. We wouldn't excuse racism so glibly, I wont be letting this slide. It's constant and tiring and I'm done with it.
@DrEilidh
Don't answer phones etc. Not your job. If a ward clerk finishes early, not your problem. Seriously only do your job, particularly at the beginning. It's tiring enough as it is.
@dannymcg
@mevparekh
This. Lovely laminated signs everywhere declaring zero tolerance. In reality no backup from management if I confront ptns over language/behaviour.
@NHSBartsHealth
@OrthopodReg
This is absolute bullshit
@NHSBartsHealth
an apology is absolutely meaningless. The difference in how you treat admin staff vs clinical staff is utterly disgusting. You're a total disgrace. Disgraceful.
@EmmandJDeSouza
Yep. Tiring as fuck. People I encounter here in England think it's funny as I will always correct. They think I'm too 'uptight' about being recognised correctly. As I tell them, you never do it to the French. They think they still own us. England is def becoming a failed state.
@DrLindaDykes
I disagree Linda. People are tired of some lives being viewed as less. To class these people as equivalent to the morons in Hyde Park is very much white privilege. I say this as a white woman.
@Aleexxies
Illness is not 9-5. Working nights & weekends is unavoidable. By the nature of workforce and training requirements 36.5hrs is completely insufficient. There are many problems needing to be tackled but perhaps working for awhile before continually ranting may be appropriate?
Do not refer to Nawal as the “Simone de Beauvoir of the Arab world.” Do not call her that. She is the Nawal El Saadawi of the world. We are not local versions of white feminists.
@ClaireRonan
@FearghaNB
@Colmogorman
Sanctimonious f**kers who claim to be pro-life but that only applies to the contents of others' wombs. Doesn't extend to anyone in DP, fleeing from persecution, discriminated o gender, orientation etc. Absolute gowls.
@GrantSana
History is still so recent. I worked in the US in 2005. I spoke with a woman whose grandfather was enslaved. We can touch history, sends shivers down my spine.
@KateBurkeNHS
Accept that with the staffing levels we cannot provide the service currently required. We can only provide what we have the ability to staff. This may mean patients lose out but it will stop further burnout and mental distress to staff.
For any man asking what they can do. Start addressing the behaviour at the bottom. It's propping up the whole rotten patriarchal edifice. See how far up the pyramid those off colour jokes down the pub are? Get used to being uncomfortable and call it out. Every time.
@albertcork2020
@TadhgHickey
Trust me, these people are ridiculously ignorant over Churchill. To them he single-handedly saved the world from the baddies. The sheer level of ignorance is something else. Blew my mind when I first moved over to England.
@Hippoclides
@Antcon7062
This is my absolute pet peeve. Terrible implications for those that didn't 'fight' hard enough (and so upsetting for their loved ones left behind).
@CovidWomenVoice
At the risk of potentially getting shouted down, recognising that being childless does not make us less as women if we stick our neck above the parapet.Too often childless women are berated by all sides. Not having children does not make us less. We are still women and represent.
@danfurmedge
As a female I always introduce myself as Ms. If I give them first name despite saying I'm the orthopaedic doctor I guarantee you they'll tell you they saw the nurse or a nice lady. As a male you don't have this problem. Nice for you but I am so tired of the microagression.
@sarah_ironside
@PhilHoganEU
@DILBXL
An Irish woman abroad and a surgeon, I've kept to the rules, not seen family since Christmas. I and thousands of others have made this sacrifice. His attitude, arrogance and sheer sense of exceptionalism is a kick in the fucking gut. He only has himself to blame. No time for him.
@drchriscarson
@nadiashad8
This is absolutely what gets me. So many lovely zero tolerance policies. I've only ever worked in one place where I felt this was actually enforced and followed through on.
@gnwren
Honestly, I'm done with men. Mainly white men, who flat out refuse to believe/see anything that hasn't happened to them. Just scrap them. Even more depressing is some of the vocal ones are in fairly senior positions. It's depressing as fuck. Fuck. The. Patriarchy.
@Dr_BellaR
Boundaries are for everyone. If I'm not giving unpaid time for free why should consultants? Yes I want to be trained: this is a system not a person issue. Also the cons speaking against this are men. It easier to be magnanimous when life at home isn't placed on you by society.
@domdyer70
Wow! To think he was born before the famine, slavery was still legal in the US. What we can state as being in the past is so recent and the impact continues to be felt to this day.
@RachaelScullyyo
@British_Airways
@AerLingus
Seriously? I'm south-east England based. It is NOT worth it. It's been a shit year for all of us but for the love of God stay put. These are people's lives, don't be so selfish.
@Jopo_dr
Same way endometriosis is much more prevalent in females than erectile dysfunction in males. I'll leave you to deduct which has had more money and research thrown at it.
@iwanttobeamedic
@noodles_nood
Honestly, either don't work in medicine, go into another career or start taking international exams. My biggest regret is training in this country. I've 3 years left and still not sure if I can take it but desperately want to practice just not here. It's truly awful.
@moribunddr
I took an F3 at that age than a further 2 years between CT2 (repeated due to I'll health) and ST3. 39 and about to be ST6. Wish I was further along but I needed the time out for my health. The NHS is relentless so don't give it anymore than you have too. Look after yourself.
@DrAmirKhanGP
Has she taught you nothing?!!! More power to her! I did an emergency makeup order for myself and colleagues, we may go down but we will go down in full war paint!!
@karimbrohi
Love how so many are saying why gender it. Speaking to trainers, female trainees judge themselves more harshly, males more likely to tick outstanding. I'm so glad one of them told me: don't you dare undervalue yourself! It's a problem. Thank you for acknowledging it.
@DaveCarrera3
@afneil
This is good for you and your hospital. Unfortunately where I am is very different. There is a dire shortage and it feels extremely unsafe.
@kittyacton
As with racism or any discrimination. Not acceptable. A refusal to see a dr is a refusal of treatment. There is no room for this behaviour.
@mmbrenn
@TheLondonHughes
Quick reminder: sex with children is rape. If you are not old enough to consent it's rape. If, at any age you are not free to say no, then it's rape.
@PickleMrs
@marklewismd
That's why I hate it. If you 'fought and won' it implies that dying is losing or you didn't fight hard enough. It's awful and I feel for any of the loved ones family that have to hear this, particularly when they're grieving. Same goes for 'warrior' metaphors too.
@EmergMedDr
This is why I've been against bringing them in early. They are going to be completely unsupported, exposed to terrible conditions and be on track for early burn out and PTSD. This is not how we should be treating our most vulnerable colleagues.
@HeldinEU
@mevparekh
Yep. In my current trust there is an A&E RAT corridor nurse and an A&E Majors corridor nurse. Everyday there are ptns lining the corridor in trolleys. These are now offical parts of A&E. It's soul destroying for all.
@WilsonAndrewDr
@Aleexxies
Completely agree. I made this point quite vociferously a while ago and got quite alot of push back. We are professionals that means not punching in and out and taking responsibility for our patients.
@DrAlanGreene
Exact same situation. And listening to medical colleagues with full access to PPE at home vs. what they are giving us here. I do not see how this is going to end well. Terrifying. I'm listening to the advice from home. Do not continue as per Johnson at al.
@ClintSmithIII
So recent. I spoke with a 90yr old African-American in 2005. Her grandfather had been enslaved. I spoke to a woman who spoke with an enslaved man. So so recent. Brought it home and I'll always remember Flora and the things she told me and taught me. An amazing woman.
@leonard_shapiro
@GinnyAB
'Don't make this a public burning at the Twitter stake' This smacks of never having had to deal with any discrimination. Maybe we're tired, maybe this happens too much and too many people say things privately and nothing ever changes. Call it out if not your part of the problem.
@NB83
@YellowpackC
@bergerie0709
@slaintecare
I think this sadly, cements that I won't be home in a few years when I hit consultant level. Have pinned my hopes for years but none of us deserve those terms and conditions. Not patients and us.
@WeeksJonny
@WhistlingDixie4
@guardian
Can you not just state Dr. Abbey. Much less confusion. It's a fact as women in medicine we struggle to get the recognition our male colleagues are automatically afforded. First names for professionals (esp women and ethnic minority colleagues) are inappropriate. Titles.
@markturner30
That your opening gambit is 'tired, unwell and exhausted' makes me think now is absolutely not the time to be going to med school. FY can be pretty soulless and the constant moving (& in CT/HST) gives no grounding. Get better first then reassess.
@irishayesha
It's absolutely cringe worthy stuff. And all after they voted just 4months ago for 5more years of cost cutting and draconian health budgets. I don't want applause. A staffed team and PPE for all. Proper pay and conditions.
@BMA_JuniorDocs
You don't need to offer counselling, you need to ensure this exam goes ahead. This is absolute bullshit. Candidates deserve better. So much better.
Jesus christ. Absolute epitome of empire racist mentality. 'The English colony of Scotland'. Fuck me. Never not at it. The utter arrogance and imperialism. These people still exist.
I despair at times when people call this a very particular or precise immigration anomaly
It isn't about immigration
We're talking about the fundamentals of the Good Friday Agreement & the denial of our right to be Irish or British or both
#WeAreIrishtoo
@abi_carey
It's not worth it Abi. You come first. Only when enough people are impacted will people realise that voting in tory government after tory government is killing them. Not up to us to kill ourselves for them. Yes, ptns will die but then we might see some change. Solidarity ❤
@Not4Twos
The matron refused to give me theatre access on my swipe card as for a 6month placement (T&O reg) it would be a 'security risk'. I also wasn't included in protective equipment orders as I wasn't 'theatre staff'. They couldn't give a fuck about us.
In today's Irish News I comment on the abject failure of the British government to understand the birthright provisions of the Good Friday Agreement. It is disappointing that the Secretary of state for Northern Ireland cannot see the clear incompatibility of the BNA &

@PMc276
@daithigor
@sarahcareyIRL
I want to second this. Fucking months we've done this, broken bad news by phone, kept loved at bay etc This is a kick in the fucking gut. Bastards, every one of them.
@DoctorYemula
At the risk of sounding twee, this is great for all: ptns, staff, junior drs. Fecking fantastic. Just shows what can be done. It should be universal but great to see.
@danfurmedge
I'm female reg in a male dominated speciality. Despite introducing myself as orthopaedic dr it seems this is insufficient for me to be recognised as one. I WILL use Ms until I am always given the recognition my male colleagues are accorded. I will not be shamed by you for this.
@HealthRegLawyer
@Transplant_Ayaz
This. I am sick, sick of trusts parroting zero tolerance when the reality is absolute bowing to racist, sexist ptns. I am so sorry you've experienced this. I am happy to stand with you in getting your trust to enforce the zero tolerance policy.
@BellaRoscetti
@Disgruntled_SHO
I hate, absolutely despise the NHS as an employer. And it's not the nice additional bits absent it's basic paid, conditions and completely appalling treatment from rota/admin/HR/payroll/site etc. Fucking hate it.
@zackferguson
Just cancelled all elective work for foreseeable future. Wards running on bare minimum staff. NOTHING is worth this. If people are allowed mix for Christmas (as current guidelines) January will be a shitshow.
@paddydocherty
@NPGLondon
Looking at Priti Patels comments last year it appears this view is still alive and well amongst the Brits. Utterly disgusting.
@amyrichaards
Not what you want to hear: don't do medicine. We are treated like shit and take the flack for the atrocious lack of funding and resources for services. I (and many colleagues) wish I'd never done. Mental, physical and emotional health costs are too too high. Look after yourself
@ahmedhankir
As a surgeon in training this is inspiring. We see the physical wounds and can help them but we cannot fix the underlying problem. Deep respect to those who can. Recognition that we are all on a team.
@The1OnTheLeft
@ChickenCaoimh
I know. I sat with a colleague in work who traced his past *4 male ancestors as drs. None of my grandparents even went to secondary. Even now, I'm still so acutely aware of it. I don't think it will ever go away, the feeling of not quite fitting into what I've achieved.
@ronanlyne
This is my ultimate ultimate hate/hill I will die on. If you're not qualified to do it here, you're not qualified ANYWHERE. Your patients deserve the same standard of care, wherever you treat them. I personally don't believe any of us should be going to aid/assist until CCT.
@niamh_dr
So fucking annoyed. I haven't been home since Dec 19. Would kill to be in Dublin to see family and friends. Know I'm doing the right thing. But in often ask why I bother? So many don't give a shit about the greater good. Honestly, humans are awful.
