My wife started working as a doctor last month. Things I’ve learned so far: 1) interns are obsessed with learning how to “put in a line”. I am very veiny and my wife now stares at my hands like a rabid dog and says “I could get a grey in there”. More news as it comes in

My wife was called “nurse” four times today - before lunch. She’s been called nurse every day since she started work as a doctor in May. All of her female colleagues experienced the exact same thing every day. None of her male colleagues have.

I'm never one to advocate for strikes, but there comes a point where it's needed, when all else fails

@ElaineByrne @businessposthq Or Elaine, you could just advocate for reasonable working conditions for doctors so they stay, without forcing indentured servitude upon them.

25) they become morbid quickly. Just now, she meant to say “are you ready to buy your ‘forever’ house?” but she actually said “are you ready to buy the house you’re going to die in?”

The driver was way over the legal limit. The driver was doing 56 in a 30. The driver had a restricted license. The driver was arrested for drink driving again only 2 months later. But the journalist felt the need to apportion some of the blame to the victim. Genuinely sickening.

29) People expect doctors to be purer than pure. I've heard people say, for example, that their doctor was in the pub last night, as if they had no right to be. The only way you'd know that is if you were also in the pub my friend. Doctors are allowed to have a social life.

Overtime rates for doctors were recently set at 1.5 times normal hourly pay. The regional hospital that my wife is going to in January has told her that while the new rate has been rolled out nationally, it "has not come to" this hospital. Another two fingers to doctors

My employer couldn't have done more. I was told to take all the time I needed, my boss checked in regularly over the next few days to see how we were. The Head of Occ Health offered to drop groceries to my door, 20 miles away from where he was.

Wife gets on BST. Gets her preferred choice. Gets email today to say that there was an admin error and even though she applied for this, was offered it & accepted it, they’ve changed it. But yeah, let’s keep asking why doctors are leaving Ireland in their droves.
