Silly me thought the GMC had an overriding duty towards patient safety and public protection, whereas they are clearly aiding and abetting UK government seeking to undermine striking doctors
@KevinPascoe
@jamie_wallis
This happened to railway workers during the 1930’s depression, my granddad included, shifting Burnley workers to the West of England and vice versa, as a form of constructive dismissal. Shocking this is allowed,
@JolyonMaugham
They are clearly preparing for a huge social media blitz using dark $ in a covert manner. Your work is crucially important for democracy

Thanks for calling out nonsense. Classic example of why retraining, accountability, monitoring are essential. Contrasts with excellent contributions from Lords with direct experience. Misinformation must stop. Hopefully PPE legal/ moral saga will catch up relevant folk soon.
@Doc_IonaCollins
No that’s not it! Lots of work/challenge ahead to advance patient safety/public protection. Let stakeholders / civic society co-produce the changes we seek. My starting point would be to use the NICE Citizens Council model to address key issues raised in this debate.
@parthaskar
@RCPhysicians
Suggest any coach worth their salt would recommend those they coach to own up to bad judgments rather than pretending otherwise.
@parthaskar
Very cool and exceptional response to such seriously inadequate comments. They are a measure of those advocating personal / financial interest as distinct from public integrity and patient safety

@DrAsifQasim
@pulsetoday
Dancing to the UK governments tune to undermine acceptable standards, to drive an insurance model and access to what we use to call General Practice
@ShaunLintern
To what extent is a false picture being presented by other healthcare professional regulators, and if so can patients rely upon them to support patient safety?
@EmergMedDr
@iDrSunny
Why should
@gmcuk
be dancing to the UK governments tune? Silly me thought its role was clearly about patient safety and public protection? What happened to ‘Good Medical Practice’?
@doctor_oxford
astounded by impact of this change, being almost invisible to the wider public. Undoubtedly will create loss of trust increasing avoidable critical incidents. Alerted

What’s happening “patients, who do not realise that they have not been seen and treated by a fully-qualified medic, being pushed by HMG…downskilling’ NHS, reducing costs and allowing increased profits for private providers, under the guise of the so-called ‘NHS Workforce Plan’”
@srturaga
How would patient / family member know of lack of, delayed, or inappropriate treatment? Indicated in case notes and or access to private WhatsApp messages?

@gmcuk
But how will you engage with patients and carers in explaining these fundamental changes, so we best ensure patient safety and public protection ?
@parthaskar
Certainly increases my determination to ensure patients are not disrespected and disregarded. They need to move on beyond student politics at its worst
@medicalmodelbri
@Molly2323232323
To avoid any misunderstanding patients and carers need to respectfully clarify the role claimed by a professional healthcare worker
@medicalmodelbri
@rcgp
Amfailing to understand why this fundamental change is being widely accepted, or invisible to most, when the end result could be catastrophic. I understood that
@gmcuk
role was to protect the patient. This issue will not go away with mounting errors revealing all/change required
@medicalmodelbri
Very obvious example of healthcare standards being diluted for those vulnerable. Why are we no longer shocked with public money being used in this way?
@DrEilidhMaria
@DrNeenaJha
Incomprehensible yes to medics but what can be done to create wider understanding on the part of citizens using healthcare? This should not be ‘buyer’ beware!
@SandipP64097927
@DrNeenaJha
"The GMC are asking the public whether they're OK with people doing a 2 year course should be used as substitutes for doctors It takes a minimum of 10 years to become a GP and 13 to become a consultant...."
Why would anyone wish to consult on such an obvious question?
@RichardJMurphy
Thanks for spreading the word. People expect to see a doctor in General Practice but this increasingly not the case. All need to ask for doctor to obtain a correct diagnosis

Ref “The GMC approach of letting employers determine scope” - am amazed by about turn which inevitably leads to variable standards/post code lottery shaped by profit maximisation driving growing inequality
@iDrSunny
Amazed this serious decline in service is happening with so little public attention. Institutions designed to protect patients safety no longer acting in the public interest. Why? Anyone in touch with
@BylineTimes
@PrivateEyeNews
ref this unfolding scandal

@DrLKVaughan
Basically, no one consulted outside a small band of professional insiders, ref. a fundamental change in regulation. That is a great way to seek trust and engagement when key decisions already taken. This will fool no one.

Let everyone outside of this bubble understand what is happening with government action to undermine patient safety. Use all types of media, please.
@implausibleblog
Never a truer word said. Media ownership distorting reality, with invisible social media storm funded by dark money, aided by AI manipulation, already hitting us.
@KevinPascoe
Action needed on diet to fight ultra-processed food. Higher rates of heart disease, obesity & some cancers in those who eat the most UPF. Requires labelling, addressing food poverty, education, public health nutrition/monitoring

Yes, but this is a very poor, complex consultation aimed at healthcare professionals. Much to be learnt from consultations undertaken by healthcare regulatory bodies but ignored to secure a predetermined outcome. Main hope is that practitioners actively respond
@DrNeenaJha
@Dr_Done_
Thank you for directly addressing simplicity arguments when discussing the daily work of doctors, used by an ex Tory Minister, when making the case for replacing doctors with PA’s.

Thanks for highlighting this crucial attempt by UK government to undermine the quality of healthcare. Could you please clarify the extent to which this is occurring in Wales & Scotland, with respective Labour and SNP administrations. This appears to be the case, but unclear.
@ExplosiveEnema2
Simple mistakes can lead to undiagnosed incidents that cause delay, complications, more expensive treatment and avoidable suffering. Is that our direction of travel?
@ExplosiveEnema2
I have asked Which? If they will consider investigating frequent concerns expressed about the role of PAs and the patient safety implications of current NHS workforce planning and training across the UK.
@iDrSunny
I suspect none of these culprits would wish their family to be treated by an unqualified medic, let alone if an invasive procedure is required. What is good enough for one is good enough for all

Today will not end this debate. The SI does not provide sustainable solution, acceptable to users and carers, who will increasingly demand change, with dramatically increasing evidence of suffering caused by this botched operation.
