@susan_bewley @ProfRobHoward @PGtzsche1 @cochranecollab @CochraneLibrary @Risk_Literacy @MaryanneDemasi I discuss this with my patients before starting SSRIs, many say that they have no interest in sex because of their depression. Others are so debilitated by their depression that they are happy to take the risk.

Fantastic Presidential talk from @DrLadeSmith A President that is passionate about community care and the needs of patients and the effectiveness of psychiatrists. An ambitious plan that could and should transform the profession and transform care.

Last day of #RCPsychIC starts with @DrLadeSmith . She reminds us what @rcpsych is all about, improving things for our patients. Takes us through the journey of a patient who was failed by the system . She highlights both the human and the financial cost of this.

ECT is one of the most effective treatments in psychiatry, I have seen it save several of my patients' lives and improve the quality of life of many others. It is an essential treatment that needs to be offered by all acute Mental Healthy Trusts.

Peter Kinderman has written to MH Trust CEOs, asking that ECT be immediately suspended, because of the recent Read meta-analysis. Worth remembering this does not constitute new data on safety/efficacy, and that the methodology used and journal chosen have been heavily criticised.

Taking a careful sleep history is a crucial part of a psychiatric assessment. Restricting the amount of a time spent in bed combined with advice on sleep habits and exercise is a useful intervention in many patients.

This is very well conducted study. It is very reassuring. It shows no evidence that ECT causes brain damage and suggests that it may do the opposite.

We need to drastically improve funding for NHS ADHD clinics and general adult psychiatric services that offer care to those with severe and enduring mental illness. I hope that the new legislation on the MHA will be a catalyst for that. 9/9

There will be many unintended consequences: increased administrative burden on psychiatrists, more untreated patients in the community, perhaps more psychiatric patients in the criminal justice system. 2/4
