I am so honoured and grateful to receive a CBE. Thanks to all the
@rcpsych
members who elected and supported me. Thanks also to my patients and their carers who have inspired me to do my best to improve the services that they receive.
This is very interesting. Staff in China dealing with COVID didn’t want psychological intervention, they asked for more rest without interruption and enough protective supplies.
Pleased to announce that I have started with
@NHS_HealthEdEng
as a National Mental Health Clinical Advisor. Will be working on recruitment, training and workforce. Looking forward to collaboration with
@rcpsych
.
I clicked on a link that was sent out by the Trust IT department to see if I could be tricked into clicking on dodgy links and now I have to do a special training course. 😭😭😭
This isn’t the Mothers Day I hoped and planned for. My son is in Manchester with all the symptoms of the virus. Even while ill he arranged to send me these lovely flowers. In solidarity with all other mothers who can’t be with their children today.
#MothersDay
It’s so wonderful when someone who wasn’t eating, was paranoid and suicidal, comes to see me looking completely well with exciting plans for Christmas. I will never get bored of this job.
I’d really like to work on encouraging uptake of more respectful language at clinical meetings. We need to bin some of the old phrases used historically and change the words we use to be more inclusive and person centred. Please could you help me by providing examples in replies
Three years ago today my mother died. She loved orchids and I learnt how to look after them from her. This little one lived with her in her nursing home. I like to think it’s flowering in honour of her. 🌺

I remember my mother Patience. First woman in her family to go to University she trained as a doctor in the 1940s when this was unusual for women. She taught me that women could do anything.
Powerful piece from
@doctor_oxford
who says “My rage is reserved for the charlatans who use their platforms to sow mistruths at such terrible cost.
These people are liars and cynics with blood on their hands.”
Remembering my mother, Patience Burn, who died exactly a year ago. She was the first in her family to go to university and combined a career as a doctor with a family at a time when that was rare. She taught my sister and I that women can do anything. 🌺🌻🌹❤️❤️❤️
Unexpectedly starting a new chapter of my life today. Have been moved from the memory service to work on a functional inpatient ward. Sad to say goodbye to patients and team (and parking). Wish me luck. 🍀

Shouldn’t talk too much about an individual patient on Twitter but I have seen it in elderly people. Have taken whole histories from people who haven’t washed or eaten for days.
Urgent studies needed into mental health impact of coronavirus. Mental health research is significantly underfunded, lagging far behind funding for illnesses such as cancer.
❗️I’m being told that all mental health trust CEOs can now request PPE which is being distributed by the army. Let me know if you have any problems and I’ll feed this back. ❗️
I’ll listen to people who say they have been harmed by psychiatry and am trying to help. But I won’t tolerate being sworn at or personal insults. That leads to blocking.
Twitter is a sad place at present but does not represent reality. For those of you watching in horrified disbelief please remember there are thousands of psychologists from
@BPSOfficial
and psychiatrists from
@rcpsych
working together and supporting each other to help patients.

Wendy. A2 I have been a psychiatrist for over 30 years, I am also President of
@rcpsych
. I want to improve care in mental illness. I believe we must spend more time listening to clinicians on the ground and to patients, Twitter perfect for this.
#OurNHSPeople
People waste huge amounts of time completing risk assessments when actually they don’t help us to predict suicide. Totally agree. Maybe this time would be better spent listening to patients?

The use of mood stabilizers in bipolar disorder was significantly associated with decreased risks of all-cause mortality. Among the individual mood stabilizers, lithium was associated with the lowest risks of all-cause mortality.

Exciting news ! In 2019 we will be starting our
@rcpsych
Twitter book-club
@rcpsychReads
where we will discuss books of interest to the Mental Health Community.
More people will die if we don’t do something about the number of beds. Not everyone can be safely cared for in the community, even with the best of the intensive home treatment teams.
Lots of intakes of breath in the room when
@ClinpsychLucy
talks about people being restrained and forcibly medicated. I have wildly underestimated the effects of this in my treatment of patients.

As I enter the final few weeks of my presidency I’m giving myself permission to occasionally retweet a tweet with a swearword in it. Only if I think the tweet is really good of course.🙊
Dreamt I was trying to visit a patient while wearing a large cardboard box. I was having to travel by bus but didn’t know where I was going and none of the buses would stop. Kind of sums up what it’s like practising psychiatry at the moment.
Who knows what will happen this Christmas? In a triumph of hope over experience (have been in lockdown for every bank holiday this year) I have bought 4 robin napkins hoping my children will be able to come home. 🎄
“Brain zaps” due to missing/stopping antidepressants are definitely real, heard about these from many people now. Please tell your doctor if you get them, don’t keep them secret.

While on a psychiatric ward a couple of years back (as I patient) I was told the 'brain zap' I was experiencing due to suddenly stopping medication was "imagined and part of my illness".
Very happy to see this is now being taken seriously.
@rcpsych
guidance on writing clinic letters is out! Huge thanks to
@BipolarBlogger
and the other patients who completely changed how it was written. 📮
The letter circulating with my name on, apparently from
@rcpsych
, that mocks unwell people is an illegal forgery. Our lawyers are involved. Please do not share.
Patients with SMI who are known to services should be able to self-refer back. I allowed this when I ran a community service. Better to catch people quickly when they are relapsing.
So, to get referred back to the specialist
#mentalhealth
team that's known me since 2015, I have to make an appointment with a GP I’ve never met to decide whether to refer me back to the specialists for a new assessment.
It’s the same ongoing health issue.

Wonderful day watching my son graduate from

. He completed his PhD at the start of the pandemic when his lab closed with a few hours notice. So proud of him.

7 days to make a difference.
Making a stew and remembering my mother. She learnt this recipe at a cookery class in the 1950s. I wrote it out when I left for medical school at 18 and have used it regularly ever since.
Can’t believe I’m saying this but what would members of
@rcpsych
think about our working lunches going vegetarian? This would be on the grounds of sustainability.
RIP Professor Andrew Sims, Past President of
@rcpsych
. Influenced so many psychiatrists, I was lucky to be taught by him. Remembering his knowledge, his wisdom and most of all his kindness.
Michael Gove has told LBC he has 'on occasion' driven to check his eyesight, but the Minister said he was 'not an authority on driving.'

There is a parallel universe where Trump got re-elected, there is no COVID-19 vaccine and we have a No Deal Brexit. Be grateful we aren’t in that one. 🪐
