40% of MH problems arise before age 14, 75% before age 25. Treating CYP is highly effective - they don’t become adults with MH disability, who may not achieve their potential; may not become economically active. Adequate resource needed to Address The Treatment Gap. #12 :112🤑.

Ouch. If you’re Black, doesn’t matter what your status is; what you’re wearing; how clever or able you are. Expectation is you’re a criminal/up to no good. Historical tropes are so ingrained - structures need changing so individual unconscious bias can’t negatively impact.

Important we know all our history, the good and the bad. Too easy to disappear it. Don’t venerate but don’t destroy. People easily forget and so problems never have to be addressed. MH care has a dodgy past. Change comes from admitting past issues and resolving to do better.

Calling all - please get involved. Really important that the curriculum is updated to meet the needs of our diverse population. The more people involved the greater the understanding. No Quality without Equality (Equity doesn’t rhyme)!

This speaks for itself. TY ⁦ @MichaelMarmot ⁩ for pointing out that we can prevent ACEs with better policy decisions. Fewer ACEs —> ⬇️ health disorders… #rcpsychWASP23 @SteveBarclay ⁩ ⁦ @wesstreeting

⁦⁦ @rcpsych ⁩ ⁦ @NHS_RHO ⁩ The really important work #IAPTreview by ⁦ @NCCMentalHealth ⁩ launched today. Powerful stuff from #AbiolaJohnson and #SatwinderKaur . Being from a minoritised ethnic group is still associated with poorer outcomes w Talking Therapies.

Fight for the things you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you. Wise words of Ruth Bader-Ginsburg. @PamelaJaneTayl1 @rcpsych @EdgeDawn @jahkey2u @keisha_a_y @lorrievan @raj_psyc @MindCharity @CentreforMH @Rethink_

So, @ReicherStephen pointed out on @BBCNewsnight that people treated as “other” become “other”. So true. How can you belong if you’re led to believe you can never really belong? No reason/incentive to get involved. The usual rules don’t apply, whether good or bad for you.

Always a pleasure to catch up @MindfulRussell and discuss goals, esplly vital need for continuity of care and therapeutic relationships; the resources needed to allow this and how to manage this in straitened times.

MH problems account for almost 23% of disease in UK, yet despite ⬆️ in funding, still only receives 14.8% of the budget (12.2 billion). #LTP added funds, but not enough. MH problems cost 112 billion. NHS crisis caused by underfunding not Covid, say doctors

So, “you said, we did”. Well done ⁦ @rcpsych ⁩ ⁦& DrAdrianJames⁩. Good leadership. SAS doctors will be properly recognised (finally) as voting members. I hope this motion passes unanimously.

This is bad, v bad. As psychiatrists we care for the most deprived and marginalised. Austerity creates deprivation. Deprivation associated with MI. Psych leaders must stand up for the poorest and most discriminated against. No Quality without Equality.

We’ve hit 100% recruitment in psychiatry, but we are losing senior psychs for the same reasons cited for GPs. #inversecarelaw - neediest areas get least resource -> vicious circle @rcpsych .

What a privilege. Chairing my idol @MichaelMarmot . A total tour de force. It should shape all our work in MH. Public expenditure ⬇️ from 42 -> 35%. Greater reductions in spending poorer areas, “inverse care law”. We must address inequality to improve MH. “It’s down to policy”.

1/3 More women now excel as doctors and psychiatrists, but I’m concerned about the ongoing gender pay gap, stagnant career progression for many and sexual harassment at work.

What a thinker! @FemiMind in full flow. @rcpsych @DrAdrianJames @wendyburn @DrKateLovett . Considering the similarities & differences between prosopagnosia and delusional misidentification. I love this stuff! Back to psych basics.
