The economic context we are in is my husband and I, a teacher and a doctor, can barely afford to feed our selves and kids let alone the increase in mortgage costs coming our way later this year. We are not causing inflation to rise.

Shortening the medical degree by one year has a tiny impact on the total number of doctors only felt the year they qualify. It has a large negative impact on the quality of medical care available.

I was a GEM student with kids and it was a huge financial commitment which if I was starting now I wouldn’t be able to afford. The solution is to fix the funding not to create shortcuts for some over others.

Exactly my point. Vast majority of messages I get from PAs/PA students are from women who ideally want to do medicine but are late 20s+ and either have or planning for children soon. Financial impact colossal as GEM isn’t properly funded when you have additional responsibilities

Here is just one comparison we should be comfortable making. Band 5 is a NQN (who I’m in favour of significant pay rises for btw.) But an FY1 *objectively* should be paid more than band 5 due to higher entry requirements and longer training before this point.

With credit to u/quertyquerty321123 I’d like to show you all a table illustrating where doctors fall across the NHS pay scales. An FY1 is paid less than a band 5. An FY2 is paid less than a band 6. An ST2 is paid less than a band 7. Thanks to r/jduk for this table.

For anyone interested: Only 20,000 or so doctors in training are under 30 27,000 are aged 30-34 More than 15,000 are aged 35-39 Almost 5000 are 40-44 More than 1500 are 45-50 About 500 are more than 50 The "trust" doctors, on the same pay scales, are typically older still.

@StevenMAlderson @DrSeanMon I wear my own scrubs. I do not have a gym bod, I have a ‘I’ve had three kids and have no time to exercise bod’. My own scrubs are infinitely better for my body than ‘unisex’ hospital scrubs. Plus better pockets.

@rahttled_doc I actually searched for the article to read the comments and wow, the ignorance and anger from them is quite something isn’t it?

@walsh_joe Don’t forget the five years before this where they have to pay for the privilege of learning their craft. If they have a previous degree we will generously cut this down to four.

@DrSelvarajah Pretty sure the evidence supports the opposite with investment in healthcare improving the economy.

@CartlandDavid If you will compare someone from a marginalised group to a nazi then they have every right to block you. And report you. And if you do so publicly why do expect them to respond privately?

@dx_mighty But why would we need another option if the GEM course is already right there and well established if the financial support is fixed?

As someone who completed medical school with kids and a full time working partner - post graduate exams terrify me. How the hell am I supposed to study while also working?

To anyone who passed a postgraduate exam whilst working full time: I’m in awe of you If you have kids as well… how did you defy the laws of space and time?

@georgebellstarr Or… absolute shameless government who knew the unison members were unlikely to be able to afford to pass up a one off £1000 and took advantage of them.

@veggieequallife I feel like I’m being punished for choosing to delay my career to have kids. I would have been a consultant by now if I had started, even GEM, without delays. I’d have been paid a lot more and had FAR less student debt. Not to mention a functioning healthcare system to work for.

@onions2903 😂😂😂 our total income combined before deductions is less than £90k. We also recognise that there are people worse off than this, there shouldn’t be. But neither they nor us are the cause of inflation right now.
