I am a huge advocate for education. I believe it is one of the most powerful tools to improve and secure better life outcomes.
However, it is no good if children cannot survive, let alone flourish without their identity intact.
Whilst the Irish famine did not occur under Queen Elizabeth's reign - what we are witnessing on Irish - Black - Brown Twitter tonight is a collective trauma. Unresolved trauma can become generational.
Colonisation is a trauma 🤷♀️
#irishtwitter
Which is absolutely true.
However, since Queen Elizabeth was born some 2 or 3 generations AFTER the Irish Famine, that one cannot be laid at her dead feet.
The Irish Famine was not the result of a potato crop failure. It was a deliberate campaign by the British to deny the people of Ireland the food they needed to survive.

My friend took his life the day before the banks repossessed his home. I have two separate neighbors (again male) who were in mortgage arrears and also died by suicide.
I think it's safe to say we are "tough enough"
"At the height of the famine in Ireland, in 1847, the Choctaw Nation of Native Americans gathered what they could and sent it across the Atlantic to alleviate the suffering of the Irish nation."
If this was the actions of any minority group, they would be scapegoated, with degrading references made to " culture" but because it's the majority population, we pass it off, we laugh it off. This is inexcusable. This is not normal or an isolated incident.
Sincere condolences to the family of Lisa Thompson.
The lack of public outcry & discussion reminds me that the murder of women in Ireland is viewed through a classist lense. We have a hierarchy of who is deserving of national grief & respect when murdered.
Post mortem to be carried out on the body of mother of 2 Lisa Thompson, who found with multiple stab wounds at her home in Ballymun yesterday. Gardai are keeping an open mind in relation to the investigation

My heart goes out to anyone that has RISKED THEIR SAFETY working in person throughout the pandemic, whether that be education, health, justice, retail and hospitality etc. I know this is a very scary time, all I can say is thank you❤️
It wasn't appropriate for grown adults to teach me as a child that I had sinned & needed to repent. Nor was it appropriate to force me to go into a dark wooden box on my own & confess, sins I felt compelled to make up to an angry adult man in a robe.
@Independent_ie
It is not age appropriate for primary school. We have age restrictions on the movies and most of us agree with them. When children grow up some more they will know. Nobody told me about it in school, and I have not missed anything in my education quality.
All art is political. Powerful art provokes emotion & discussion.
Those incapable of critical reflection may see this as a personal attack.
Those directly impacted by homelessness, may see it as an act of resistance and a tool for liberation.
I've no words or energy to counteract the negative stereotypes and tropes towards us Irish Travellers tonight.
From the bottom of my heart, I am so proud to be Traveller and so proud of all tonight's guests

Them: You call yourself Traveller but live in a house.

But delighted to announce that I was accepted for the Social Work Masters in UCC.
Thank you so much to my amazing friends & mentors for all the support ❤️
Eh.... Up Cork I guess 😂
People often ask what can we do to become Traveller allies? And it's difficult because many of us become overwhelmed with life and work commitments to take action. If I can ask you to do 1 proactive thing, please sign this petition.
In one year, my baby sister married her best friend, completed her master's, built a home and made this precious bundle of joy.... Baby Nell 😍
Meanwhile, it took me ten minutes today to open the child safety mechanism on the washing powder🫣
This is awful. A heart breaking and dehumanising experience. It's not easy to go public with incidents like this. Huge respect for the ladies for remaining so calm and measured. I'm glad the other couple supported them. That kind of solidarity is priceless.
@love_prezzo
why is one of your managers discriminating against a mother and her children? We all know the usual spiel, "we're fully booked". Even though the restaurant was practically empty. Even other people who were dinning left after they saw what happened.

I'm passionate about social housing, not because I'm a "leftie" or "woke" .... I simply want children to have access to the same opportunity that I had growing up.
It breaks my heart that others have pulled the ladder up & normalised child homelessness
My father told me he was once, as a child, ill in bed when the rain-sodden ceiling of his bedroom collapsed in onto him.
It triggered the privately rented house his family were living in to be declared unfit and for them to be rehoused in a corporation house in Cabra.
It takes a huge emotional toll to speak about these experiences let alone live them. I am eternally grateful to Senator Flynn
@Love1solidarity
for all that she does. Her values, determination, authenticity are to be commended 💚
Well, that escalated quickly 😬
Not that I need to explain, but I come from a very loving & diverse family. First generation Polish, Australian & Canadian. We are a mix of Traveller, non-Traveller,LGBT+, Muslim, Catholic. We are extremely lucky and happy ❤️

There are several Traveller teachers, principals, doctors, media personalities throughout Ireland. I say this because I know them. However, many of them choose to hide their identity. This is not a privilege, it's internalised Shame.
While shopping in TK Maxx today, I'd to listen to a white woman spout racist and xenophobic bile to a young woman. I politely interjected and simply told her she is a racist. I remained calm, she got triggered. So now there is probably a video

I am a firm believer having women in leadership roles. However, not just any women but the right women. Unfortunately, this does not fill me with confidence.
Respectfully
@josephamadigan
the women of Ireland deserve better than this
@nealerichmond
It's interesting that you are not concerned about the political representatives from other parties in opposition that have also shared this image.
It's not like he compared extending the eviction ban to 'making sweets free for children'
I say this with the utmost of respect. Please
@MichealMartinTD
tell me how we protect Traveller children from this kind of hate? Why do we have to rear our children to be resilient to racism from your party representatives? This has shaken me to my core.
@fiannafailparty
cllr in Galway city,John Crowe,says a house bought in Renmore by the council should go to a settled family and not a Traveller family.He says our culture is too different and says he doesn't want another Kiltullagh house burning incident.

I always get nervous just before I speak at a public event, regardless of how big or small. I was saying this to my parents yesterday and my 7 yo niece overheard.We chatted & I explained why I was speaking. I showed her the event flyer.

It was a result of austerity and the tax on children's shoes when mothers had to cut children's toes off to make them fit.
And this is why everyone needs to stop voting FG.

I didn't fully appreciate how important representation in education was until one day I found myself sitting in a lecture hall and was overwhelmed with emotion. This was my first time meeting a Traveller lecturer / educator

Once you scratch beneath the surface, it's very clear, that the rights & safety of women in Ireland is not a priority.
Minimising
@BrianLeddin
behaviour is unacceptable. It also reinforces the belief that women in Ireland are not equal or valued.
Growing up, I had no idea there was a stigma attached to being Traveller. Some of my family lived in houses, some of them in trailers, most importantly, each were beautiful, warm and safe homes.
I have no issue highlighting animal welfare concerns. However the use of othering & racist tropes to frame animal neglect as if it's an issue associated with Traveller culture, when we know it is a significant concern across the board is unjustifiable.
Practically every Irish family has a “tradition” of horses - with most of our grandparents owning one before upgrading to a motorcar. Family “tradition” and “culture” doesn’t confer unconditional rights to own an animal you that have little or no ability to adequately care for.
Respectfully, if this isn't far right then I don't know what is.

Address the video or don't, it's irrelevant. Your words at this stage are meaningless. You got you notoriety.
Respectfully, keep away from our young people.
I'm an adult woman & if something like this happened to me, I'd be absolutely traumatised. The frightening reality is that this is a reality for many minority youths, esp black & brown and I hate having to make that distinction but that's the horrific truth
Just a Traveller man and his two daughters having a sing-song.

Very few people rehabilitate within the prison system. They survive a cycle of poverty, trauma, homelessness
The anniversary of the Carrickmines tragedy reminds us of Ireland's greatest social divide between Irish Travellers & non-Travellers. This should have been a turning point, unfortunately we see the social determinants of Travellers dwindle even further. Why?

Please take 5 minutes out of your day to read this article. I don't think many of you understand how difficult it is to see children living in rodent infested accommodation or using buckets as toilets, let alone how difficult it is to live like so.
The endemic, institutional, and everyday racism and discrimination towards Travellers must end. The Irish state has no more excuses. It must lead and deliver on Traveller accommodation.
There has been a call for a Galway councillor to be suspended from his duties after comments he made about plans for Traveller accommodation in the city
I watched this discussion. Sharon Keogan was disrespectful to the witnesses and was unable to hear or accept that when it was respectfully addressed. From what I could see, she was not there to critically debate but to dictate & antagonise. Very strategic.
To the parents who bring their children to far right demonstrations, this is what you are rearing them to believe and how to behave.
What other message can your children come away with, except that it's ok to assault and racially abuse other kids.
One of my most memorable experiences of empowerment as a student was the first day I heard the fearless

I'm not affiliated with any political party. Sometimes I regret it but to see people (particularly from Limerick) that I once respected, immediately politicise a young persons trauma rather than show sincere empathy reminds me why I disengaged. Do better.

A gender analysis of Irelands homelessness figures shows that females account for 41% of homeless adults, this places Ireland far above the European average 20-32% (Mayock & Bretherton, 2016).
⚠️Females account for 56% of the homeless Traveller population⚠️
@JamesMFKearney
Correct. Halting sites are not a part of Traveller culture, it's a racist element of assimilation policy designed to deter and destroy our culture. We were othered, which made it easier for society to turn a blind eye. Direct provision is a similar model.
