" A four-foot box, a foot for every year." - Midterm break, Seamus Heaney
Possibly the most powerful words ever written in a poem.
Many an Irish child left English class a little changed because of this poem.
Let the media run with this Traveller story.
It wont get the click bait from angry racists, but it's worth the write up.Well done to this young lad.
Recently Travellers helped save a driver,
who was trapped inside an overturned truck.
Plenty of positive stories,
if you look.
I'm sorry, but this ain't our culture and I challenge every Traveller org in the country to call this crap out. Yes, sulkies are part of a tradition held by SOME, but ANIMAL WELFARE and road user SAFETY must supersede everything else. I don't care who it offends, this is wrong.
Ugh, for feck sake like. 36 years of age and my mother still shouting and roaring at me for drinking milk from the bottle and putting it back in the fridge. There's worse out there than my germs.
All her shouting has now brought us to the attention of the Tesco security guard.
A young Traveller lad who was enrolled on a Diversity program at An Garda Siochána was told he failed Garda vetting and would not be offered a position.
He's 18 with no criminal history.
#cblive
There was a young Traveller lad today out with a plastic bag picking nuts from trees. He knew all the edible ones and the ones that didn't feel ripe. He knew all sorts about the different trees. He was about 15/16.
That's a part of the culture that's all but forgotten and lost.
For the 1st time 2 Travellers were nominated for smedia awards.Both Travellers study at
@UL
and both picked up awards for group projects.
@MartinMongan_
as editor and 1st Irish Traveller to a journalism BA, and I as a director and 1st Traveller to do an MA in journalism.
Tome😊
I rarely swear on social media, but fucking hell, what happened to young Shane O'Connor is a tragic. How does a person in care get left unsupervised after recent attempts at suicide? How has the poor mother been left without contact from those charged with his care?
#RIPSHANE

I really couldn't care less if
@LeoVaradkar
shifted some man in a club and I don't care if he cheated on his husband. These are private issues and nothing to with me and they don't mean anything regarding doing his job. I think you're a weirdo if you film people sharing a kiss.
I don't think it has been mentioned enough, but the Gardaí in Sligo did a great job in finding the suspect of the Murder investigation really fecking quickly. I hope that justice is served.
I got 200 points in my LC.
I Was lucky that
@ImeldaByrne2019
at
@NUIGAccess
gave me a chance.
Couldn't afford to confer in 2015.
Today I got the papers.
Next month I start an MA in journalism in
@UL
I'll always be grateful to ANYONE that has helped or is helping me. Always😊
Two suicides in the Traveller community within the space of a week, one man aged 27 and one girl aged 14. Unrelated, unconnected, and unknown to each other. One in the west and one in the south.
We need more outlets, therapy, visibility, attention, and mechanisms for hope.
New handsome butcher in nearby shop.
I've been buying 2 sausages a day and having a chat with him since he started.
Today he said it would be cheaper for me to just buy 6 sausages in one go instead of buying 2 everyday.
Have we just had our first tiff? Is he asking for space?
In all my life I have never seen dirtier people than those that were at EP this weekend. Excrement up along the walls and the roof of portaloos, the campsites were left like dumps. I know everyone says it's all part of the experience, but I just think it's absolutley disgusting.
The best thing about not drinking on new years eve is that you get to start the year all fresh.
A 6km walk at 8am, then 30 minutes yoga, finished off with a nutritious and healthy breakfast.
Not me though, just some weirdos post on Facebook that I read.
My first column will be in
@IrishTimes
tomorrow and the Irish Times online on Sunday.
To say I'm chuffed is an understatement.
The encouragement and opportunities I have gotten lately have been amazing. Massive appreciation for
@DublinInquirer
for giving me a break too.
❤

Great.
Nelly, One of the last remaining Travellers still living in a traditional wagon. I went to Tipperary yesterday to record a video for Traveller pride. Here's a few shots i took.
My brother Tomàs graduated yesterday as a qualified mechanic. He has already started a new additional apprenticeship as a heavy Goods vehicle mechanic.
He benefitted greatly from recent supports for apprentices brought in by

This is how we build social capital.😊
I was outside a hotel last night and there were 2 teenagers trying to get home. Mild mannered lads,the kind you would see spending their whole day playing PlayStation.They tried 3 taxis while I was there, offering money up front to get them home.
Taxi wouldn't drive to Finglas.
I'd like to introduce you to the newest member of the Warde Clan, Darragh, all 9lbs 4oz of him.
A Horsh of a yung'fla, God bless him.
Baby and mother doing great.❤
I remember when Ricky Martin came out as Gay and one of my mates from home was devastated when she heard. Such a waste,she said.
As if the plan to marry an international pop star had been destroyed. Like he was going to go to Tuam,County Galway and propose to her in supermacs.😂
I said yes!
Only joking, but today I was gifted this ring by the family. After an elder dies in the Traveller community, the jewellery and keepsakes are divided out amongst the family.
This was my granny's Claddagh ring that she wore everyday, now my most prized possession.
Jesus Christ almighty, these women are what you call BRAVE, in every sense of the word. After all they've been through, they publicly spoke about it to help other victims of sexual abuse. Heart breaking to hear what their lives consisted of, but so proud of their strength. ❤❤
‘Come forward and ‘don’t be afraid’ - Helen, whose father James O'Reilly was jailed for 20 years for the repeated rape and sexual abuse of his seven daughters and his younger sister, appeals to other victims of abuse. More

I knew the 3 days of fever wasn't normal. Sharing this because for some fucked-up reason,people,my own family included,believe that having the virus is something to be ashamed of.There's more shame in having it and not taking precautions. I'll be ok, I'll only ever die on-stage😂
I launched the Meath Travellers local area crisis action plan today. Its a plan to provide 4-6 weeks support and counselling for families bereaved by a crisis death or suicide.
I also learned that the two boys that stopped the homophobic attack in navan were Travellers.
I am rarely, if ever, blown away by a job advertisement....
But this is an ultimate super saiyan, next level and final form type of job listing and employment approach.
This is the kind of place that makes me want to spend money.
Please share the job listing.

Was driving into Galway city today and a guy in his 40s pulls up beside me in traffic.He was recording me on his phone camera as he pulled up saying
"Martin Beanz Warde....look who it is boys, it's the Gypo...what Gypo is this boys?".
And people say Travellers are uncivilized.
My parents are staying in Dublin tonight for the first time.
My mother said the place is cleaner than and not as rough as she thought it would be.
I joked and said that there's no place like Tuam, eh.
She said the hotel left free drinks in the fridge.
Culchies on tour😂
My uncle has left us all.
Devastated and heartbroken. A man of only 53.
Rest in peace uncle Patrick. I have many uncles, but you were definitely one of the kindest and most genuine.
Now we wear the black, and now I sit with the shadow of our last encounter.
It's taken me a few days to really come to the terms with the fact that I am annoyed and I feel let down by the
@ClaireByrneLive
show.
How can a show allow 1 of its guests to go live on Tv without telling them that the 1980's had requested their blazer's shoulder pads back?😳
I've nothing further to say on this and the reason is this. I am not a voice of reason, I do not know how the country should or could be run, and I have no interest in entering politics.
Instead, listen to the activists that work with the homeless. We should listen to them more.
"I don't care who gets into power, just fix the problem" a passionate

Want a crash course on how the media can stoke up resentment?
1st pic is the headline for a Traveller funeral.
The 2nd and 3rd pics are for a non Traveller funeral. Same paper,same city, same week.
R.I.P to all the deceased,I'm aiming this at those reporting.

A young Traveller lad came out as Gay last night on social media, obviously not going to mention his name here, but for me it was a little bit of happiness in a time when everything is so sad. The courage required to come out as LGBT as a Traveller should never be understated.❤
I got just over 200 points in my Leaving Cert. We all learn differently,and sometimes regurgitation of readings isn't how someone learns. Every brain works differently in an exam setting. Sometimes, the stress affects memory recall.
There are always other ways into university.❤️
This is only a tiny snippet from an hour of interviews. This is also some of the milder issues faced by these single mothers living in a homeless service, between 10-16ths each. Constant surveillance, curfews, reported to Tusla for socialising at their door. More videos to come.
I will always truly believe that those that let off fireworks are definitely not pet owners. If you saw the quivering, or the terror in their eyes, you'd know what I'm talking about.
Very sad news. Irish Traveller, Nurse, and drag queen, George Ward, who appeared on Th Paul's drag face as Cherry Valentine, has passed away suddenly. George created visibility for LGBT Travellers in the UK and is a huge loss to us all.
#RIPCherry
Today my childhood friend and neighbour will make his Final journey home from Hospital. He died Saturday at the age of 35.
Today is his 36th birthday.
There hasn't been a year since 2006 where someone i know hasn't died.
We live for the living, and die a little with the dead.
This is so embarrassing,I actually need to pleas with people on social media in the hope of getting a discussion started around the prejudice that exists within the arts in Ireland. Believe me,no comedian or performer needs this kind of publicity so this is not a stunt. It's real
What is it with the world's fascination with Barry Keoghan?
He does one film where he gets out of a bathtub and shows his micky off and suddenly everyone calls him brave, inspiring, and talented. The Brits even tried to claim him.
Yet, when I did it, I was thrown out of IKEA.
I don't even know how to express how much this means to me. I am delighted to be joining an award winning team of film and Tv makers. This is my first step into the land of Production, which is real and meaningful empowerment. I already know I will learn so much from this team.❤️
We are delighted to announce that
@martinbeanz
has joined us at Frontline Films as a production and development assistant.
Many thanks to
@ScreenIreland
and
@screenskillsire
for their support in making this possible through the Pathways scheme.
Was walking back to rehearsal, and just as I was walking past the National Library, I spotted this lady through the window.
This is the lady who sparked off my writing and became the muse for my play, The Dead House.
This is my granny, Maggie Mongan.
May she rest in peace.
My granny,1950s, photograph improved. Its amazing what technology can do.
This was our queen,A proper Minceir, who came from extreme poverty. She travelled the length and breadth of Ireland, spoke cant and in later years knitted blankets to raise money for orphans in Chernobyl.
Helena Power is a Traveller woman with a surname that denotes her character.
5 minutes before this shot, she was nervous and shy.
I told her, "Pretend you've booked me for an hour and try to portray yourself in a way you'd want to see yourself in a magazine."

I spoke to 4 single mothers living in homeless accommodation today. All on camera.
One was assaulted. Another couldn't go to the hospital with a broken arm for two days because the "service" providers said her mother can't babysit, and that only a social worker could..
There's a lot of talk about security checks for Ukranians fleeing war, but not enough talk about the need to Vet the 1000s of people opening up their homes to them.I know it's cynical,but also realistic to assume that out of the 1000s of genuine people,there'll be a few bad ones.
Really shocked and upset to hear of the two murders and an asssault within a few days in Sligo. The current trend on social media with homophobes is that they can spout their hate without consequences, burn pride flags publicly and then say we have no reason for pride parades.
When a member of my family dies, within hours one of the extended family starts a collection towards the costs.
The grieving family are never told as they'd only refuse. We may seldom see each other, but upon death,we come together as one.
Families come together when torn apart.
I filmed Tom McDonnell, one of the Last remaining Tinkers as part of the Traveller Oral history project i am doing with
@NMIreland
.In that he went step by step,even telling us where to buy materials and tools.
After filming we made a video of him teaching me.

This woman has lost over 26 family members to suicide.
This is Mags Casey, and here she is picking up a Human rights award from the

, on behalf of the National Traveller mental health network.
If strength could be personified it would look like Mags.
Today I bring my mother to New York for her first time.I've pulled out all the stops and have worked hard the last 2 years to make it happen. She has done so much for the family all our lives and has supported my creativity.She will be surprised at JFK with a limousine transfer😁
The Irish language is difficult to learn, but it is gorgeous. It should be respected by anyone claiming to be Irish. The fact that only 16000 people speak it regularly should be a call to arms,a motivation to promote and cherish it,not to degrade it on TV with a plamás handshake.
An old video of my granny that was sent to me, telling my cousin about the importance of doing good in the world and how she used to make blankets to sell on so that she could give money to those in need.
Have a lovely weekend and may kindness find you before you need it.
Settled people like this make me laugh sometimes.
Going on about Travellers robbing stuff.
It wasn't a Traveller that sold off 13trillion euros worth of gas off the Irish coast and not one Traveller was to blame for the whole bank bailout thing.
The biggest thieves wear suits
"I was 16 when I got married,it was arranged and I didn't know what my husband looked like. When we married, I didn't talk to him for 3 days. Then i fell in love. Years after that he used to joke about wishing I had never started talking because I talked too much."

A colonial outpost that became a country in 1901 is about to vote against constitutional protections and political voices for the indigenous people who have been there for 60,000 years.
Ah yes, let's ask the 97% if they want to give back a voice to the original 100%, now 3%.
Australians are set to overwhelmingly say 'No' to a proposal to constitutionally recognise the country's Indigenous people in a referendum on Saturday, one of the final opinion polls ahead of the vote showed
A Brazilian national with a stamp 4 visa and who is 9 years married to an Irish person,has just been stopped by immigration at Dublin airport and was asked why he is travelling with a friend and not his partner. Then asked to show private messages to show he is still his partner.
Dog owners, is there anything more infuriating than seeing an owner of a large dog approaching you and upon requesting that they recall their dog to put them on a leash, they reply with,"Don't worry,he's friendly", while said friendly dog is running at your tiny leashed terrier?
Sorry, I deleted the other tweet with this video because I said things about Des that were really unnecessary and without actual proof. So here is the video,I'm asking him to apologise to my community publicly. No cancelling or blacklisting,just an opportunity to learn and grow.
Just returned from my beautiful Aunt Kathleen's funeral. So sad to say goodbye at 40,so sad to watch her fade away into the next realm through cervical cancer. Shame on you that lack empathy at these difficult times,shame on you and May God forgive you, because I currently can't.
Here's a picture of my granny from the 1950s, enhanced with colour. I come from the greatest of stock, and the most beautiful part of my granny was the how her mind connected with her heart. 😊
A new year's day jog, fresh kale and potatoes for dinner, washed down with a kombucha tea.
Not me, someone on Facebook.
I'm sat here with 3 litres of trifle in front of me.
A video of hope, love, peace and good will to you all, from all of us Travellers.
May your Christmas be full of love and laughter,and if it is not,May your soul be rewarded at another time.
Merry Christmas and have a wonderful New year❤️

Today's filming location for the Traveller elder oral history project for the
@NMIreland
is Navan.
I'm about to sit down for a chat with Nell Mcdonagh, wife of the late Michael Mcdonagh, the Traveller historian. This wagon is 50 years old and is in live-in quality. Stunning.
Big massive street party in Dublin, a big funeral in cork last week, pictures all over social media of People attending family and friend's Barbeques... But a Traveller funeral takes the headlines in cork. Most of the reports overlooked the actual Tragedy faced by the family.
A little message to the privileged white settled people that are currently on the anti racism buzz, because for some of you, that's all it is.
You're not anti racist when you find no desire to protest against the racism and discrimination Travellers have historically faced
#blm
To see a Traveller wagon outside the Dáil on a day of protest was powerful,especially when we are only protesting over the lack of action and engagement on Traveller suicide.Promises of support need to be fulfilled.
No one at the office of An Taoiseach would accept our letter.
I'll be starting a 1 year MA in journalism in UL this year & 1 step closer to a PhD in media bias and effects on minority groups.I'll have to work long hours next year to fit in a masters, theatre +comedy shows and other projects, But Education, & success on merit is vital to me.
