Dublin's avg rent is now €1,916 per month. You need to be earning €115,000 a year (in top 5% of earners) to 'afford' this rent (i.e. be less than a third of your net income). And 1916 is the rent? 1916? A message from the Easter Rising 1916: Don't take this any more renters!

Took kids into town & showed them where daddy went to college. My parents didnt go to uni. I got in to wonderful @tcddublin cos of genuinely free education in 1990s & great teachers in my local (public) CBS school in Tramore. Public education should be funded properly & no fees

Cost of childcare is bonkers here. Talking to colleague in Germany. Asked him how much he pays for his kid. €300 a month for full time creche! !!!!!!!!!!!!! We pay upwards of €1000 a month per child in creche. Then he says. You know in France its free? #CostOfLivingCrisis

The picture is causing outrage because it tells the truth. The Irish state is overseeing the evictions of 1000s into homelessness. Gardai carry out the laws of the state. Says everything that privileged Ireland's 'outrage' is over the picture not 1000s of families being evicted

Dublin rents now 100% higher than 2011. €985 to €1972. Adding €12,000 a year extra in rent to be paid. Thats a cost of living crisis! Government ignored calls for rent freezes year after to suit investor fund REITs. Failed to provide supply of affordable homes #Rentfreeze

Its a worrying time for academics to publically engage in policy discussions, when an elected member of Government, rather than engaging in policy debate, casts aspersions on your academic integrity, on live national TV. In democracies academics have impt role in policy debate.

The richest 10% in Ireland own 53% of the wealth. But half the country only owns 2% of the wealth. Ireland has a major inequality problem & COVID made it worse as Irelands billionaires increased their wealth. Rising housing inequalities making it worse also @OxfamIreland

Dublin had the HIGHEST average rent per month in the EU in 2021 More expensive than Copenhagan, Paris, Berlin, Luxembourg, Helsinki. Renters getting fleeced. I love this city, but its a small regional European city, its not Paris or Berlin.... The rents have to fall

1175 new homes were built in Dublin in the first three months of this year. Just 219 – 19% were bought by first time buyers. 739 - 63% - were bought by ‘non-households’ (mainly investor funds, but also councils & AHBs) Investor funds are locking home buyers out of the market.

So a house or apart you could have bought for €200,000 in 2012, now costs you €420,000. Now that is an incredible achievement decade of Fine Gael led Governments. Dublin residential property prices have risen 110.8% from February 2012 low #housingcrisis

Dad died 21 years ago today, at just 56, from cancer. From today I will have lived longer without him than I had with him. A sad reflection. But he gave me a love of nature, the sea, family, politics & hard work. We had some very tough & very wonderful yrs. Love u Dad. Always.

Failing to register a tenancy with the RTB is not just unethical, it is illegal. Landlords who do not register a tenancy can be fined up to €4,000 and face imprisonment for up to 6 months on conviction Failing to register with the RTB leaves tenants powerless

Just got a call from a renter in Cork asking if I knew anything about a rent strike being organised? Renters clearly reached breaking point. The water charges protests also started by a small group of ordinary folk in Cork. Will it take this for Gov to move on #HousingCrisis ?

A couple & their three kids are being made homeless in Ballina, Mayo today by a landlord seeking to massively increase the rent. Theyve no where to go. Is there anyone with somewhere near that they could rent, even on short term basis. This is horrendous. Any help DM me. Thanks.

Last two days the baby has been sick - last night the vomiting bug hit her, her 5 yr old sis & my wife. At 4am I was changing pjs, getting towels, washing sheets etc. Made me think- how the f**k do families with sick kids survive in #homelessness hotels & hubs. Just so wrong.

A family I know being evicted from their home of 8 yrs. Landlord claims to be selling up. They can't afford to rent. Cant afford to buy. Theyll try double up with extended families. Because our Government wont ban evictions. Lapdogs of landlords & investor REITs Shame on you 😡

Actually over a third of renters are families with children. They cannot share -unless you want to go back to the overcrowding of the tenements... Also renters are increasingly in their 30s 40s,50s Why should they have to live with strangers in order to afford a home??

60% of take home pay for a person on €40k is €1,600. Look, I'm not saying the rents out there are acceptable, they're not. But the vast majority of renters are sharing with others. I always shared when renting. Divide by two and % of income is 30%, not 60%. @RoryHearne

Why are house prices so high? Because private developers make huge profits off homebuyers. Glenveagh made 47mil in profit in 2021. 41,000 profit per home it built. The CEO Stephen Harvey took home whopping 1 million salary. The market turns a basic human need into huge profits

I'm being contacted by renters who can't claim €500 tax credit because their landlord isnt registered with RTB. This is unfair. Renters afraid to even ask the landlord. Proof of rental payment should qualify the tenant? They shouldn't suffer for landlords failure to comply.
