I feel proud and privileged this morning putting my name forward to be the first ever directly elected mayor of Limerick. Looking forward to campaigning and doing my best to pursue a vision of the Midwest Region to become the counter balance to Dublin that is so greatly needed.
We must quickly halt SUV sales if we are to meet our 2030 targets. This applies to electric SUVs also. In an electricity system that will still burn fossil fuels in 2030, smaller and lighter electric vehicles will generate less CO2 than heavy, large SUVs.
It's interesting to see how deliveries by cargo bike are becoming the norm in Dublin. I guess it doesn't make sense to be driving vans around, as was the norm in the past. We should look at incentivising this kind of last mile delivery in order to make our cities work better.
I've rarely seen Limerick city centre as busy on a weekend in June. One of the most successful projects we've done is Little Catherine Street. Just shows that if we design our streets for people rather than cars then they'll be vibrant and welcoming and we all benefit.
Big, big news for Limerick today. A new train station is to be built at Moyross. It will be the first of a network of new stations to be built in the coming years. I worked very hard to achieve this and am delighted it is happening now. Thank you
@EamonRyan
and
@greenparty_ie
This is what the Phoenix Park was like last month. Yesterday's decision to open the gates is hugely disappointing. It will reinstate these roads as a short cut for thousands of cars, and diminish the park experience for Dubliners.
Waterford has been pushing ahead with ambitious public realm projects in recent years. It is ahead of any other Irish city. Now, during this pandemic, the city finds that it can easily provide street space to retailers to enable social distancing. We can learn from Waterford.
Wind is currently providing around four times the amount of power that the Moneypoint coal fired station ever did. It is set to break an all time record later today, providing a staggering 4.5GW. We are world leaders already and we're only starting.
@EirGrid
@ESBNetworks
If you burn oil or gas to heat your home, the carbon tax increase will cost you about โฌ1.50 per month. The revenues from carbon tax are used to fund a very ambitious retrofit programme, increased fuel allowance and grants for farmers to farm more sustainably.
Is this the site of the proposed whitewater rafting centre, which the government decided not to fund during the week?
Could it be a park, filled with trees and flowers and winding paths and benches, bringing greenery and biodiversity to the city centre?
Train from Limerick to Galway - โฌ7.49
The service was only reinstated a few years ago but was already up to half a million passengers p.a. before Covid.
Provide a reliable and inexpensive inter-urban rail service and people will use it.
The brand new early morning rail service which gets travellers from Limerick into Cork before 9am begins tomorrow morning, and it's only โฌ11.59 (or half that for young people and students). And there's no wait at Limerick Junction.
Today marks a turning point for rail in Ireland. We are re-opening this line, initially for freight, but it is part of an ambitious vision to build new stations and deliver many new services in the Midwest. 60 years of under-investment is at an end.
Very strong cross party consensus in the Dรกil now. This is a very rare thing, and I think the last time we saw it was with the Climate Act. This time it is an endorsement of the Nature Restoration Law. Hugely important signal from Ireland ahead of
@EUparliament
vote next week.
Sad to see the fine trees by Sarsfield House all cut down by the OPW after one tree fell over the wkend. We need legal protection for significant trees and a commitment from public bodies that they will consult before felling where there is not an immediate risk to public safety.
Stopped by the boardwalk by the Liffey, for a few minutes to reflect, on the way to catch the train home after making my maiden in the Dรกil. I'm incredibly honoured to be representing Limerick in our national parliament. To do so in these trying times makes me even more so.
I had a chat recently with my friend Nรณra, a landscape architect based in Copenhagen. She is a great fan of Limerick and its people and she decided to re-imagine Catherine Street as a more people-oriented space.
Here's a sneak peak of the Castletroy Greenway which will open on Thursday. It'll be a major boost to communities in Castletroy, Monaleen, Bloomfield, Glenside, Woodhaven, Newtown, Annacotty. It's another step towards creating a city where walking & cycling is easy and enjoyable.
Thrilled to arrive back to beautiful Limerick after 5 weeks of negotiations to form a government. Talks went on until 4am last night and there's some issues left over to be agreed by leaders of
@greenparty_ie
@fiannafailparty
and
@FineGael
today. Very proud to have played a part.
190k views on this platform before the truth got its boots on. No doubt we'll be hearing this as a trope against electric buses (and the Greens) for some time to come. The journalist could have checked with
@Buseireann
before tweeting.
Following the death of Aoibheann Duffy, aged 11, on a rural Kerry road last week, I spoke about the issue of road deaths in the Dรกil. Yesterday, Charlie McDonagh, only four years old, was killed in Longford Town. We cannot continue to tolerate the deaths of children on our roads.
Really glad to get positive news from An Garda Sรญochรกna at today's Joint Oireachtas Justice Committee on their plans for automatic number plate recognition and an online portal for members of the public to upload evidence of illegal parking on footpaths, cycle lanes and bus lanes
Huge news. We don't need LNG for energy security. And we certainly don't want Ireland to be a hub for fracked gas. North Kerry & the Shannon Estuary needs investment. We can work together to find better, cleaner solutions for employment and energy.
When I studied renewables in the early 2000's it was considered impossible that the grid could handle even 20% of instantaneous generation coming from wind power. The people in
@EirGrid
have made the impossible possible. They are the unsung heroes fighting climate change.
Just back from the Moray East wind farm, which is 50km off the northeast coast of Scotland. There's 100 wind turbines out there. We'll have these kinds of projects up and running off the Irish coast by the end of the decade, providing jobs and decarbonising our power system.
Interesting to see these new bike racks on the Dublin to Cork/Limerick train. It's a neater way of stowing bikes and the increasing popularity of bike-train-bike journeys make this kind of facility more and more important.
Investment in public transport is higher than it has ever been. This is because
@greenparty_ie
is in government. The truth is we will have to spend multiples of this figure to get the level of service here that other countries already have, but it's the right thing to do.
Until today, these Limerick villages had no public transport on a Sunday. From today, each village will have 4-6 bus services each way.
Ballylanders, Caherconlish, Cappamore, Doon, Galbally, Herbertstown, Hospital, Knocklong, Murroe, Pallaskenry, Shanagolden.
A number of test centres for Covid 19 have been set up in the Limerick area. PLEASE NOTE: Under no circumstances should anyone go to the centres without a referral from their GP and an appointment to attend. They will not be tested if they do. Please retweet.
#MidWestTogether
Overwhelming cross party support for Climate Bill to proceed past 2nd stage in Dรกil just now. This is hugely significant. While
@greenparty_ie
has championed this it must be embraced, and is being, by all parties. We'll work together for climate action and a just transition.
It was a joy to cycle down the quays in Dublin yesterday on the nearly ready interim Liffey cycle way. I urge
@LimerickCouncil
to do likewise in Limerick. There's a clear and very welcome increase in cycling in all our towns and cities, but we have to provide safe routes.
I cycled with
@seanohartigan
from Abbeyfeale to Barnagh on the new and very impressive
#LimerickGreenway
ahead of its official opening this afternoon. This part is one of the highlights, but there are many more besides. By next summer it will be extended all the way to Listowel.
Arthur's Quay Park, before and after. The
@LimerickCouncil
of the late 80's had the foresight and courage to oversee this transformation, despite the loud calls for the site to remain as a car park.
The debacle in Galway tonight suggests that providing unprecedented funding is not enough and national policy is being ignored. Our local authorities have to be at the forefront of climate action. They must live up to their responsibilities, or government must make sure they do.
Current processes & legislative tools in Ireland need an overhaul to enable major shift to sustainable transport & improve road safety.
A good 1st step would be introduction of formal trialling legislation to reallocate road space for walking, cycling & public transit projects.
The revised National Development Plan was launched this afternoon. Limerick and the Midwest Region has done really well. I've worked hard with
@EamonRyan
to deliver this rail plan, which will be a game changer for the Region and will help us develop as a counter-balance to Dublin
It's not right that people must stand in the rain at one of our main bus stops. There was a great opportunity to design William Street properly, to meet the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, but we produced a two lane highway and taxi rank instead.
Looks like over 90% of our electricity is coming from wind generation tonight and we're exporting just under a gigawatt to Northern Ireland and Britain. Is this a record
@EirGrid
?
Paris has lots of one-way streets, just as many Irish cities do, but cyclists are permitted to cycle against the traffic. Motorists know this, and they slow right down. It also means people on bikes can take the most direct route, making cycling a good option for getting around.
Over 50% of households in Moyross and Southill donโt own a car, today
@Buseireann
announced they will be doubling services to these areas of Limerick to once every 15 mins, expanding to the evening, and extending to Georgian Village. Funded under govt July Stimulus programme.
If we're to bring some Dutch politics over to Ireland, I guess we'll get lots of cycle lanes, a great rail network, catchment based flood solutions, liveable cities, speed limit reductions, loads of offshore wind power, measures to tackle greenwashing too
Much of the discussion on climate on
@RadioBrendanRTE
just now was a mixture of deliberate and unwitting misinformation. We need a much higher level of debate if we're to meet the challenges we face. Media needs to step up.
While hundreds of thousands of parents and kids tuned into
#LateLateToyShow2021
tonight, the great majority of those households were were being powered with renewable electricity. Thanks to
@EirGrid
and
@ESBNetworks
for making Ireland a world leader in renewables.
Drained peatlands account for about 9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, i.e. three quarters of all transport emissions or half of agricultural emissions. This important point should be in the article, surely?
@sharonmlynch
One of the most beautiful commutes Ireland must be between Limerick City centre and
@UL
along the banks of the Shannon River. Unlike other cities, we have a lot of potential to develop more of these.
@LimerickCouncil
must be ambitious and develop plans as soon as possible.
Here's a 'courtesy crossing' in Limerick. No ostentatious flashing beacons and it doesn't cost โฌ50k. The pedestrian waits at the kerb and there's no obligation for the motorist to stop. I tested it and 8/10 motorists did actually stop. It would be good to see many more of these.
Some very welcome news. Just now, in response to a question from my Green Party colleague
@joefingalgreen
in the Dรกil, Minister Ross has confirmed that road space reallocation, such as that we are seeing in Dublin, will be rolled out in Limerick and the other regional cities.
They say โWe canโt do that. Weโre not Amsterdam.โ You respond โAmsterdam wasnโt always like that either,โ showing before & after transformations illustrating that cities we admire made CHOICES. They make more tired excuses. Donโt accept them. (1e van der Helststraat, 1978 & 2005)
Very happy to cast my ballot today endorsing the Programme for Government. I'm proud to have negotiated the target 50% cut in greenhouse gas emissions in 10 years which will make Ireland a global leader. I did so with amazing help from so many people and organisations. Thank you!
Implementation of All Island Rail Review will reverse a six decade long undermining of rail in Ireland.
๐ Metro rail systems for Limerick & Cork
๐ Hourly trains between our cities
๐ New and reopened rail lines in the West of Ireland
๐ Connect our airports to the rail network
The first All-Island Strategic Rail Review recommends faster speeds, improved frequency, and new rail routes for people and freight, particularly across the west and north of the country
Climate Bill passes final stage just now in the Dรกil by an even bigger majority than second stage last month. All parties in the Dรกil are supporting this historic piece of legislation which will set us on a course to net zero emissions by 2050. It'll go to the Seanad next week.
By investing in public realm, taking difficult decisions about street space and by valuing its heritage, Waterford has become Ireland's prettiest city centre, without doubt.
A software developer in Limerick got in touch with me to ask how he could help in the crisis. I suggested it might be useful to turn the daily HSE data on
#COVID19ireland
into a presentable form. Here is the result. Well done, John!
Today is a key milestone in our push to harness the vast wind energy off our west coast. The leadership from
@ShannonFoynes
and
@EamonRyan
will, in the fullness of time, be seen as truly visionary. We will power Ireland and Europe through Foynes and the Shannon Estuary.
The Shannon estuary has been identified as one of the best locations in Europe to develop large-scale offshore wind energy. A new study has found that giant wind turbines operating in the Atlantic could produce over six times our current energy demand |
Zebra lines have been painted at this raised crossing lately. The new regulations mean they can be put at raised crossings without a requirement for expensive flashing beacons. They establish pedestrian priority at low cost, meaning we can have many more pedestrian crossings.
Disappointing to hear
@PaulCostelloeUK
lamenting how great Dublin was "before the cycle lanes" on
@MiriamOCal
show on
@RTERadio1
just now. I don't understand the objection to infrastructure that's necessary to make getting around our cities safer and more efficient.
Pleased to announce that Minister for Transport
@EamonRyan
and the government have today agreed to provide funding for Shannon Airport (additional to Budget 2021) of โฌ8.4m. We have also agreed to fund a study to connect Shannon to the rail network via a spur to Sixmilebridge.
A big day for County Limerick. Really proud to have played a part in securing the funding for this, and many thanks to
@EamonRyan
for getting behind Limerick and
@LimerickCouncil
to develop this special amenity.
The city centre is bustling today. It's great to see it come back to life after a hard few months. We've some tough days ahead of us yet, but if we work together and support each other we'll come through it. The decision to remove fees for outdoor seating has been a good one.
I am very honoured to have been selected to stand in the upcoming general election, to represent Limerick City in the Dรกil. I didn't think I'd be running in a second election within a year. Thanks all for your support, advice and well wishes.
Here's a๐งตon the Climate Bill, which is nearly over the line now. It will set Ireland on a course to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Some late amendments have been accepted relating to how we account for emissions, and some of these have caused concern.
This is an incredibly poor decision by the cabinet. If we're at all serious about drastically reducing the number of people driving, why then are we building new roads at huge expense? It would have made far more sense to invest in rail in the West.
This will take a journey of 20mins down to one of 15 mins.
What a phenomenal waste of money.
Who is this even for!?
Perhaps, instead of spending years ploughing up the countryside for a road Nobody has ever mentioned wanting we could start local energy projects?
Today is a hugely proud day for all of us in
@greenparty_ie
. This is the most important result for so many of us. I want to pay particular tribute to
@EamonRyan
for rebuilding the party, for his absolute determination over many, many years to make Ireland a leader on climate.
A big step forward for power generation in Ireland, enabling home owners to become a key part of our transition to renewable energy. Householders will be paid for the excess renewable electricity they generate. Payments will be backdated to February.
"Other sectors of our economy are producing higher emissions (than agriculture)"
I'm at a loss. Which other sectors are they? Agriculture is the largest emitter at around 37%. Transport next at around 20%.
Foynes will be a busy rail terminus once more in a few years. Initially the line to Foynes will be upgraded for freight. Then new stations will be built at points along it, like Raheen, Patrickswell, Adare, Rathkeale and Askeaton with passenger services to and from the city.
"The incident in Dolphinโs Barn has prompted questions around the safety of e-bikes and e-scooters"
You could be forgiven for thinking the e-bike killed the cyclist and not the truck.
Myself and other
@greenparty_ie
TD's have worked to develop these plans. They will drive sustainable and balanced regional development. It's the first time in the history of the State that a government has been ambitious for rail outside of Dublin.
A 20 minute layover in Limk Junction en route to Cork isn't the end of the world, but reducing it and increasing line speeds will make the train a more attractive option for residents of both cities. Good news is new rolling stock for
@IrishRail
is on the way so this will happen.
Foggy morning at Limerick Junction. I'm fortunate to have been able to travel frequently by train in the last year. My experience on these many journeys has always been positive. Thanks
@IrishRail
for keeping the show on the road and for your professionalism throughout.
While Ireland were playing Wales in the
#6nations
@AVIVAStadium
and battling the elements a new all time record was set for wind energy generation in Ireland. Good to be winning on multiple fronts. Well done
@EirGrid
and
@WindEnergyIRL
and, of course,
@IRFURugby
A project of breathtaking scale was announced yesterday to harness the wind power off our Atlantic Coast. This represents just the beginning of a new fossil-free industrial revolution, one in which Ireland will be to the forefront. 1/5

: A 1,400MW floating offshore windfarm, a turbine construction hub and a hydrogen production facility are all part of the plans to transform ESBโs Moneypoint site into a green energy hub
This is the first solar farm I've seen along the main Limerick/Cork to Dublin rail line. This sight is commonplace in Europe when travelling by train. We've plenty of catching up to do, but progress is accelerating.
Very happy to see
@Limerickcouncil
begin work on developing a parklet on O'Connell Street as part of their Covid mobility plan. I undertsnad that businesses will be able to apply for parklets outside their premises. It is a better use of public space than on-street parking.
One of Limerick's lanes showing a glimpse of its potential, thanks to
@wearecanteen
. Would be great if the old Theatre Royal, which backs on to the lane, was restored.
Methane is 90 times more harmful as a greenhouse gas than CO2, and now we've learned that gas, coal and oil exploration is responsible for 40% more methane emissions than previously thought. This reinforces the urgent need to stop fossil fuel exploration.
This false claim was just repeated on
@RTERadio1
news and wasn't corrected. That is irresponsible on the part of
@RTERadio1
and they should correct the claim in subsequent bulletins. There is no dispute that agriculture is the highest emitting sector.
"Other sectors of our economy are producing higher emissions (than agriculture)"
I'm at a loss. Which other sectors are they? Agriculture is the largest emitter at around 37%. Transport next at around 20%.
Even if there was no climate crisis this post displays a spectacular poor understanding of our energy challenges. We have a generation shortfall not a supply shortage. Having an LNG terminal would do nothing to help the situation.
Tonightโs
@EirGrid
dashboard. Little more than 5% of total national need being generated from wind as lows tonight forecast of -2 to -6 pushing up demand. Gas tonight making up 68% We are going to rely on gas for nights like this for some time
#LNG
plant is needed for supply
I was out in Foynes this afternoon for the launch of
@ShannonFoynes
report on offshore wind potential. The Midwest and Limerick can be the hub of the offshore energy revolution, providing thousands of jobs, while generating vast amounts of clean power.
New Year's celebrations on Nicholas Street, Limerick. This community gathering with St. Mary's Pipe Band to ring in the new year is a wonderful tradition. Long may it continue. Wishing you all a great year ahead.
We want to develop suburban rail around Limerick City, with a view to providing new stations at Shannon, Moyross, Ballysimon, Raheen and Adare and reopen the line to Foynes. These will drive high density, quality housing development and enable sustainable growth of our city.
Getting cars out of Madrid resulted in a 10% increase in retail spending. If we invest in bike and bus infrastructure then we will see similar increases here. However, if we prioritise spending on infrastructure for cars then city centre retail will inevitably falter.
As kids many of us enjoyed the freedom of cycling to school. Unfortunately, in recent decades there has been a total collapse in the number of children who cycle. The new cycle lanes on Shannon Bridge will help reverse that trend.
The reason new homes don't have chimney stacks is because they're required to be built to the "Near Zero Energy Building Standard". To spell it out, very little energy is required to heat them. They're inherently immune to high fuel prices.
