I’m an FY2 doctor who does not have a job from August. It’s May & there are very few clinical fellow jobs advertised. Locums are drying up. I applied to med school as a working class student & was the first in my family to go to university. Doctors no longer have job security.

I love how if you go 80% less than full time as a doctor (under 40 hours a week) then you get reduced annual leave days, but as a doctor on a regular 48 hour average working week you get no additional annual leave compared to others working in the NHS on 37.5 hours a week 💀

There are many doctors who want to work, but no job for them to go to. Instead we are being actively replaced by other roles such as PAs. I am not eligible to apply for these jobs even though I am more qualified. My CV is well rounded and I am a good doctor.

To the people telling me to just accept a job anywhere in the UK. Why should I have to uproot my entire life again. I can’t afford to. I didn’t apply for national training. I should be able to find a job in deaneries close to my support network. The lack of jobs is the issue here

the reason I am tweeting this is because I know there are many FY2s in the same position as me. I didn’t apply to training as I am undecided on which speciality. I’ve been a doctor for nearly 2 years yet now I’m facing unemployment. We have a manufactured shortage of doctors.

Extremely disappointing that Nuffield Trust are choosing to exclude doctors and dentists from this proposal. Medical and dental degrees are abysmally funded compared to other health degrees. This widens disparities further for medics from widening participation backgrounds.

The few doctor clinical fellow jobs being released are then closed within a day or two due to receiving hundreds of applications. Locums also drying up. There’s a lot of doctors, particularly F2s, facing unemployment come august. What are royal colleges and NHSE doing about this?

When will the @gmcuk release guidance on whether FY1s should be prescribing for PAs? As FY1s we are supposedly under supervision yet due to understaffing etc we can sometimes be the only prescriber on a ward.

Doctors have scope. As an FY1 doctor last year I couldn’t make the decision to send a patient home. As an FY2, I can now do this but very often I still run it past a senior. Currently a day 1 PA can make discharge decisions. Regulation means scope. Patient safety is paramount.

Did you know that NHSE give trusts a salary contribution of £15,603-£19,353 for EACH foundation doctor. When your trust tell you, they can’t afford for you to have time away from the ward to attend opportunities, then ask them why. F1s working 9-5 Mon-Fri cost a trust £16,795

This really frustrates me. I’m told that PAs need to have job satisfaction and value or they’ll leave which is why they need a varied rota. But because hospitals don’t have to recruit foundation doctors they simply don’t care to do the same for them.

Raising this internally doesn’t work. Raising it externally doesn’t work. I wish I could say the tide is changing but I’m not sure it is. Doctors are being intimidated/ ignored when they raise genuine patient safety concerns around PAs. Where do we go from here?

@parthaskar @gmcuk @NHSEmployers @NHSE_WTE @doctor_oxford @OrthopodReg @mmamas1973 @DrAsifQasim @Zudin_P @DrLKVaughan @UKGastroDr @trishgreenhalgh @iDrSunny @RoshanaMN there are so many F2s without employment in august onwards. Meanwhile plenty of PA jobs that I’m not eligible for… make it make sense

The only answer to being asked to locum during strike days 😌

Please do NOT locum during the Doctors Strike. I’ve been offered a whole host of locum shifts during the strikes. Just say no. There are 300+ other days of the year to locum. The choice is yours: a few hundred pounds now, or a lifetime of #PayRestoration #DoctorsStrike

@Xeon4f145d96s1 @gmcuk @BAPIOUK @parthaskar Today I’ve paid £166 to apply for full registration. It’s shameful that our money gets spent on cases like this

@LeanneHPatrick No I think it’s good to care about people’s MH. Doctors are certainly concerned too about the MH of PAs and we hope they are ok. However, nobody seems to focus on the MH of doctors that are unemployed etc due to being substituted by this role and more.

@uknursenoface Because it is not equitable when we have hundreds and thousands of medical students not able to afford rent. Medical student funding is absolutely dire please read up on it

Dr Lewis Potter delivered an incredible talk to our NW Foundation Doctor Reps on his leadership journey with founding @geekymedics & training as a GP. All of us there had used geeky medics throughout medical school so we were very grateful to hear his story and hard work @iLeW

@drmattuk @LukeAmos__ @NNUH I can tell you now without an FOI that the likely daily responsibilities of an FY1 there will be ward round scribing, TTOs, and prescribing on behalf of the PAs lol. No theatre or clinics lol

@thegradmedic Why do they get preferential treatment of staying in the same area when medical students applying for foundation don’t?

@McfcRuds @GBNEWS Do you understand what inflation and year on year pay cuts mean? Nobody signed up for the pay like what we have now. I applied for medical school in 2016, was I supposed to have a crystal ball and know how much my pay was going to cut by?
