@RobertNelson23
You’re wrong on 1 or 2. I’m not sure why some people in these replies think gay people don’t pay income, sales, or property taxes. But even if you were right, we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the U.S and we need more workers. Our economy > your identity politics.
Crime is always huge news when it goes up, then basically goes unmentioned when it goes down.
On a related note, did you know car thefts are down 42%, carjacking is down 18%, and shots fired are down 14% in Minneapolis this year?
Homicides are plummeting.
In all 10 cities with the most 2023 homicides—for which we have data—homicides are falling. The pandemic crime wave is crashing hard.
If these percentage decline numbers were percentage growth numbers, it would be the lede of every cable news show—>
Denver got more than 1,000 homeless people into housing in only 6 months and kept a public dashboard so everyone could track their progress along the way. This kind of stuff is possible, it just takes leadership and execution. Let’s demand more in 2024.
House 1,000 people living on Denver's street in under six months.
Some people thought it was impossible, but I knew we had to confront homelessness in a big way if we wanted a big change. 1,034 people have come inside as Dec. 30. This is historic, and we’re just getting started.
One of the things I'd like to see people grapple with a bit more is that this isn't just a train from Minneapolis to Duluth. Coon Rapids, Cambridge, and Hinckley stops could end up being a huge deal. Cheap land for new homes now connect by rail to 2 major population centers.
It took two decades, but passenger train service between the Twin Cities and Duluth cleared a major hurdle when the Legislature dedicated $195 million for the 152-mile route.
So I really think the firm that got paid $950,000 for this could've done a better job than including this shot of Baltimore that is very obviously not Minneapolis in the middle the ad:
I’m very confused about how someone that was directly implicated in stealing money from kids in the Feeding Our Future scandal less than a year ago is even tangentially involved in politics, let alone someone’s campaign manager.
Abshir Omar, campaign manager for Warsame, says Jeremiah Ellison assaulted him at W10 convention and he’s pressing charges. Provided no details but we’ll ask.
Ellison says this is “a lie.”
Look, I love watching Caitlin Clark as much as the next guy. She’s a superstar.
BUT… on behalf of the state of Minnesota, tonight we ride with Paige Buckets and our (I can’t believe I’m saying this) UConn Huskies. Sorry Caitlin, it’s just business.
Regardless of your feelings about rent control, holding a critical vote during a major Muslim holiday is not something that should ever really happen in this city. Totally avoidable issue.
According to CM Jason Chavez, the City Council meeting was moved to today without consent from the Muslim councilmembers. This flipped the rent stabilization ordinance vote with three people missing. CM Jason Chavez is visibly upset and has said as much.
"An Eden Prairie-based aerospace engineering company that worked on the International Space Station, the James Webb Space Telescope, and NASA’s most recent Mars Rover is expanding to north Minneapolis." $30 million manufacturing project. Big stuff.
So these two companies built cars that are so easy to steal that teenagers regularly take them, and also built cars that's they're saying might be too dangerous to park inside. At what point do we force these morons to buy these all back and take them off the road?
Hyundai and Kia are telling the owners of nearly 92,000 vehicles in the U.S. to park them outside because an electronic part can overheat and cause fires.
As I sit on a packed 6 bus this AM, I wanna give a shout out to
@MetroTransitMN
for being dramatically, noticeably more on time the last month or two. Buses have been showing within a minute or two of the scheduled time. Keep up the good work guys.
Don't have huge objections with the article, but man, this headline is brutal. Brutal. Yes, gun violence is down the last two months. But that trend started this summer, months before Operation Endeavor launched.
Coming soon to Minnesota: "They’re betting that a Scandinavian model, in which we pay higher taxes but are guaranteed benefits like education, health care, transit and paid leave, will nudge people to be healthier, better educated, more productive."
.
@jpcoolican
knows more about MN politics than just about anyone, and he makes a case that the democrats' huge legislative session was the product of decades of groundwork
I’m so happy. I love the Timberwolves. I’m gonna howl in the face of so many people for the next 48 hours, you’re welcome if you end up on the other end of that.
Karl-Anthony Towns was the best player in a Game 7 on the road. Leading scorer, guarded Jokic, crucial bucket. ❤️🐱
People here should embrace this triumph for what it is - we made it easier to build, we built a lot, and now rents are in a really good spot relative to most other cities. It worked! Smile! Enjoy it!
Brand new $145 million solar manufacturing facility coming to Minnesota!
“Canadian solar panel maker Heliene is planning a major expansion of its U.S. manufacturing operations with a new Minnesota factory that will produce both modules and cells.”
@MinnPost
I love you guys, but really strange move to publish this now with so many unchallenged assertions. In particular, major crimes are way down this year with basically the same level of officers. This whole piece is really misleading.
If you post about the Timberwolves tonight, I will give you one “Like” in the form of a heart. All Timberwolves posts welcome. I’ll try to get to all of them, please be patient.
Chris Finch getting taken out in that spot is such a classic Minnesota sports thing. We will give you a joyful moment but we will take your coach’s knee in the process.
Yes, mass shootings are getting more common in America. Yes, there was a big uptick in people being shot and killed in cities all across the country. Yes, this did happen right after gun sales exploded. The biggest cause of these is quite simple – it's the guns.
New Pew/CDC data: Gun deaths among U.S. children and teens rose 50% in two years—up 100% in 10 years
This is the highest level of gun violence against children recorded this century, and more than 2X higher than the 2012 low.
One big way that our media ecosystem is broken is that hear about problems, endlessly, and never about those same problems when they get better, leaving you with a feeling of everything being broken all the time.
Look at eggs! They’re cheap again!
Above all else, the Hyperloop is a horrible piece of technology. It’s a one car at a time escalator that’s more expensive than the value it creates.
Want futuristic, high tech transportation? Build the country’s only maglev train. Rochester to Minneapolis in 25-30 minutes.
They are all grossly underpaid. If we want good people and people raising families and people that don’t come from $ in these jobs, we should pay what it takes to make that happen.
The guy running the public safety department making more than 2x his boss, the Mayor, is crazy.
The Timberwolves are responsible for 50% of the Nuggets losses in the 2023 and 2024 playoffs combined.
Game 7 is gonna be a blast. Hydrate. Stretch. Crush some film. We are locking in.
Announced publicly in the Connect newsletter today: Metro Transit is beginning to require senior staff to ride transit, as part of their performance reviews.
Minnesota’s largest voter-eligibility change in half century wins final passage.
Heads to

I… can’t believe there isn’t a backup plan here? They are just going to let it die?
But I thought the same about Nice Ride, so maybe the problem is me having reasonable expectations that somebody’s paying attention.
@Drewpetersen35
@TravisNordgaard
you are responding to a tweet about people moving here. which you think is bad. because it's going to... make my taxes higher? lol.
Remember this day. This is the future of our economy and because of this bill, Minnesota will beat a bunch of other states to the punch. Thousands and thousands of jobs, innovative technology, and home-grown electricity coming our way. Can’t wait.
A proposal to require Minnesota's electrical utilities to transition to 100 percent carbon-free energy sources by 2040 is on its way to the governor’s desk after the Senate passed it late last night. via

What an absurd argument. Feels to me like there's a legit problem here – but the solution is to say truckers should be able to get a little high while they're off the clock hanging out, not to use your political muscle to fight legalization.
Vikings weren’t ever that good. Despite that, they gave us a ton of fun moments this year and stole a bunch of games. Great season, and the Niners would’ve beat us by 40.
This is the kind of big thinking you need if you really want to see lots of office to residential conversions happen. The cities that rip the band aid off like this now are going to be years ahead of the ones that don’t a decade from now.
"Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is proposing to give downtown office building owners a property tax break of up to 75% over a 29-year period to convert their properties into apartments or condos." .
A political operative that works for the Sheriff’s office suggesting now might be the time for a purge is, in fact, a big part of the problem here. And looking at the Red Scare as something that we should emulate? Yikes.
After
@stribopinion
lets Frey guy Jacob Hill write an op-ed pretending to step away from undermining endorsed Ds, they let him respond to
@rtrybak
& promote a DFL purge. Worth noting a united DFL regularly defeats GOP these days & HHH red scare purged many loyal Ds unfairly. 1/x
This is a great idea. And imagine how much better it will be once the HERC (circled in red) is gone. There's so much more developable land in and around the North Loop, that whole side of town has a ton of growth opportunities yet to come.
As the North Loop continues to grow, it might make sense to look at replacing the 4th Street Viaduct with an at-grade street that can be used by local traffic.
Here's an attempt at visualizing the possibilities if the viaduct came down.
In 3 years or so, Hennepin is going to be a pleasant place to hang out for the first time since automobiles could start going 30 MPH. People are underestimating how transformational that could be.
In addition to all the nice new trees and plants that were added along Hennepin in Minneapolis, there are also now more than 80 new racks for bikes and scooters!
At the Star Tribune, we take turns writing obits, and sometimes they turn out to be the most fascinating things in the paper. Thx to the Rybaks for sharing the traumatic story that brought their amazing matriarch to Minneapolis
@R_T_Rybak
@charlierybak
When we launched this thing we knew we wanted to make it as transparent as possible. People deserve to know where their money is going.
Here’s a very long look at year two of Minneapolis Voices. Our revenue and audience both grew by about 60%, putting us in a strong position.
As Minneapolis Voices enters its third year, here’s a look at how Year 2 went.
Every dollar we received, every dollar we spent, all of our biggest pieces, and a few media trends that we’re watching as we continue to build our news organization in public.
This is one of those stats that's somehow pretty widely disbelieved, so it's worth repeating – taxpayers paid $760 billion to subsidize oil and gas production in one year. An astounding waste of money.
Mukhtar changed the media world in the Twin Cities and beyond forever. Legendary efforts to build Sahan Journal from a dream into what it is today. We should all be super grateful.
Timberwolves star power flexing again here in the clutch in Golden State.
-Gobert scrambles and gets a piece of the corner 3.
-Ant breaks down the entire Warriors defense, makes beautiful pass to corner.
-Conley dagger 3
Wolves win.
Cool story about a few St. Paul schools installing geothermal systems: “Both should pay for themselves in a decade. Johnson High’s savings will be $7 million over 30 years.”
Living in the Wedge and working at Sabathani leaves me feeling very excited about a hard decision I have to make when I wake up every morning: bike on the Greenway or down the beautiful new Bryant bikeway to get to work?
Really excited about this partnership. It’s been a blast to work with the whole MinnPost team on this one.
You deserve to know who is spending money to try to win your vote and why. If you live in Minneapolis and want to know more about who that is, check out the guide below.
We’re collaborating with MinnPost this year on some election coverage. Check out this guide on All of MPLS, Minneapolis for the Many, the Downtown Council, Faith in Minnesota, and other influential groups that will play a role in this year’s election.
This is really, to me, mostly a restoration of the Minnesota I grew up in. Well-funded schools, well-resourced local government, things that mostly worked & looked good. Federal cuts of the 80s & 90s, Pawlenty cuts of the 00s, austerity of the Great Recession laid waste to that.
I’ve never been a huge stats guy- so correct me if I am wrong, but if we get over 21.1” from this storm, it would place us at number 2 for storms since 1883. The granddaddy storm is 28.4” from the Halloween Blizzard in 1991 (of course). Info from DNR website. Either way, it looks
Downtown Minneapolis looks like Wrigleyville right now. I fear whatever havoc the Cubs fans may unleash. They have the numbers to overthrow us all, keep your heads on a swivel.
Horrible idea. The city races will get no attention, when in reality they need MORE attention. Imagine trying to run a citywide campaign during the last two presidential elections??
Minneapolis moving to even year elections for mayor, city council, and park board? It's still a live issue that could end up on your ballot in 2024. A Charter Commission work group just voted 7-0 recommending that the full commission hold a public hearing on the matter.
Last week, the Twin Cities Media Group () bought a billboard to help support local news.
If you're feeling despair at seeing all of the job losses across the industry, there's something you can do to help. Find out more here:
There are tons of great everyday uses for this one, and Lake Street regularly has the most packed buses I take, but what I really like is to plan out fantasy days with these things. I will be pulling off the Bde Maka Ska swim/Lake Street meal(s)/Saints game combo at some point.
I believe "absolutely awesome" is the technical description for what the B Line is going to be. This thing is going to be absolutely smashed full of riders.
@ArmandDoma
@DKThomp
They never really had a good ROI and the people with big budgets finally started to figure that out. Lots of snake oil in that industry. Very unfortunate the number of media companies that got addicted to them.
When the process functions flawlessly, .01% of the voters in the city sit in a room & cosplay Model U.N. until the group with the least to do on a beautiful weekend afternoon outlasts the other one. The process has also never once functioned flawlessly. Why does this still exist?
At the risk of putting too fine of a point on this, I think the Minnesota I grew up in was basically the best place at the best time to be a kid. And I'm really hopeful and happy that another generation might get that same shot.
Governments at every level have had huge cash infusions the last couple years and one of them should step up here so this doesn’t go away. City, county, state, whoever. Somebody be a leader!
Also, 6 years ago or so I started betting against the Vikings in big games. Couldn’t recommend it more. Really soothes the soul in these moments and betting that the Vikings aren’t going to win big games is a lucrative business.
Minneapolis needs an updated flag. So let's design a new one together. Submit your design by January 15, 2024. Or Melody's weird cat flag is going to win.
100% right. And this isn’t the kind of thing that you should throw your spokesperson to the wolves on. If you’re actually planning to cut the funding for a popular community event, you should have the guts to come out and say why yourself.
I want to know the REAL reason the city cut Open Streets funding because this response is so absurd as to damn near imply a more interesting and politically incendiary answer exists.
