Those that can cause the greatest harm bear the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce the danger they pose to others.

1. You can claim against them. Insurance makes no difference to liability.
2. Car drivers don't contribute to roads - they're subsidised by non-drivers.
3. That damage does not look like it was caused by a bike. It's from a vertical, flat surface. Did you scuff a wall?
In Scotland you can commit a crime, be videoed doing it have 2 independent witnesses ... but no charges will be brought if you can't remember doing it.
Absolutely incredible.

@theJeremyVine
@PoliceScotland
- you should be ashamed; you're not fit for purpose.
As I have feared for the past 15 months, I have finally had confirmation that no action is being taken against this driver by

@Sandford_Police
A cyclist smashed through the back of my son’s PARKED car. It took a solicitor’s letter to get a payment - from the home insurance policy of the cyclist!
In 1924 when Road Tax existed it was £1 per horsepower. Inflation would make that £50 per horsepower in 2023.
That would make the Road Tax on an entry level Ford Puma (Britain's biggest selling car) £6,250.
Compared to £16.50 for a 250W ebike.
Seems fair.
@1rorycowan
@Sandford_Police
Yes Rory,
@Sandford_Police
have already explained that the van caused the accident.
Now, do you have any information about the van or not? Because wasting police time is a serious offence.
As well as the ignorant ones who haven't a clue how roads work, I particularly enjoyed the responses from would-be roads engineers who would make this safer by forcing cyclists to give way or stop and every junction and enforcing a 10mph speed limit on the bike lane.
@SkyNews
After the Queen died we were told "now is not the time" to discuss the future of the monarchy.
Isn't BEFORE this coronation the time to have that discussion?
Perhaps a referendum on whether to go ahead.
Pedestrian causes death of a cyclist; 3 years in jail.
Lorry driver causes death of a cyclist; community service.
Tell me again who this principle applies most strongly to?
@Herts_Highways
To be fair to
@Herts_Highways
I checked to see if they'd advised drivers to slow down to a safe speed when it's dark - you know, so you don't run people over.
They haven't.
They have blamed pedestrians, children, motorcyclists, horse-riders, joggers & even dogs. But never drivers
There's a guy on Nextdoor moaning; apparently he can't get a fridge delivered because of the World Championships.
I thought the entire point of owning a car was so that you could deliver your own fridge?
#FridgeGate
There's no middle ground reaction to videos like this. Either you're horrified at what drivers are capable of, or you're snickering at the guy nearly killed.
This is much more about mental health than it is "share the road" signs.
@telesyros
Active Travel Campaigners: it would be great if people cycled and walked more, and drove less

Did you miss the boat in the middle lane?
Next you'll be telling me you didn't see the gorilla that walked across the screen and waved half way through the video.
Unsurprisingly, the comments are full of the usual idiots explaining why they "have" to park on the pavement.
Guess what; if the road is too narrow to park without obstructing traffic, you can't park in that road. F*ck off and park somewhere else.
One week to pavement parking is finally banned in Scotland - no more of this we hope. Please help us and the

Is that why he has the camera?
These officers may have had the best of intentions, when they pulled me and my GD over for cycling in the bike lane, without helmets, but it may not work out that way.
Following our exchange, the first thing my GD said was, "I'm not going on my bike again now."
@Nai__xo
That's a brilliant idea; we could charge 20% on top of the price of a new bike, parts, or servicing and call it VAT.
We could also make cyclists pay a % of their income; call it Income Tax.
And we could make them pay something to their local council. Could be called Council Tax.
@EdCycleHome
@CllrScottArthur
You can't win.
Use the bike lane; everybody was in their own lane.
Don't use the bike lane; your fault for not using the bike lane.
Painted lanes do more harm than good. Anybody injured while using one should sue the council for causing the accident.

"Judge Timothy Stead told the young woman that it was ‘highly unusual’ for a driver to avoid an immediate prison sentence in those circumstances. "
It isn't.
It should be.
Drivers in Scotland can now be fined £100 for parking on the pavement. Scotland is the only country in the UK to bring in a ban and from today councils will begin to enforce the rules.
@carlafrancome
Drivers: Children shouldn't be cycling on the road it's too dangerous! Take them to the park.
OK, I'll get a taxi to the park with my kids and our bikes
Drivers: What!! You're getting a taxi! What hypocrite. Why can't you cycle??
@roadcc
"he cycled primarily on the pavement during his commute along the A170, apart from a short section of 50 metres where the path stops, and where the collision took place"
Yeah, he should've been on the footpath that doesn't exist 🙄
The deaths of 5 cyclists/pedestrians led to protests & now this response in Birmingham.
In Scotland after a spate of road deaths at the start of the year we were told by the completely useless
@PoliceScotland
to wear hi-vis. We should've been out protesting in the streets.
🚗 We’re taking action to make our roads safer!
Today, our officers from

We stopped vehicles for excessive tinted windows, dangerous defects and various driving standards issues.
I'm working in Edinburgh today in a hotel on the High St.

An actual tax consultant who has no idea how VED works and thinks The Road Fund Licence (abolished in 1937) still exists. Is the rest of his tax advice equally out of date?
Please give Howard Cox/Fairfuel 5 min of your time to tell him you support LTNs, oppose registration of cyclists, etc. You need to make it past the questions on Smart Motorways.
If his survey is to have any value it needs input from all kinds of drivers.

Also great for pedestrians. And children. And parents. And people who live there - whether they want to drive to their home or not.
In fact it's only shit for rat-runners.
The Highway Code says cyclists have priority here. But
@GlasgowCC
have managed to design a bike lane that gives priority to traffic on the road, hence the hoot from the Wankpanzer driver who was almost, nearly, but not quite inconvenienced.
Commuters who cycle to work are less likely to be prescribed antidepressants, new research shows.
Analysis of almost 380,000 people living in Scotland suggests commuting by bike reduces the risk of mental health issues.
Excellent case for the compulsory testing and licensing of cyclists. No road user goes through red lights more than they do, apart possibly from e-scooter riders who obviously have a death wish with their coffins on wheels.

@PidginPosting
I discovered this a while back, it's how I now own an anti-cycling group. The group was still active, but had no Admin or Moderators so I volunteered and turned it into a cycling group.
'Scotland’s roads would be a lot safer if all drivers knew how frightening it was when a car passes too closely.'
A cycling charity has launched a new safety campaign urging drivers to give cyclists more space on the roads.
I like trams. Buses are useful. Trains are great ( f you live and work near a station). But by far the best and cheapest way to move large volumes of people around a city is on bikes. In safe, dedicated cycling infrastructure.
“While Mayor, I was often asked ‘how have you been able to afford this in

The problem with Texas is you HAVE to drive everywhere.
Public transport is almost non-existent, many housing estates don't even have sidewalks, they've widened the Katy Freeway to 26 lanes and it's STILL choked with traffic.
@AdamBronkhorst
Motor vehicles are subsidised by around £2500 per vehicle, per year.
So bicycle owners/riders should receive a payment of around £2500 per year.
Just hurled a pile of abuse at a taxi driver who hooted repeatedly & shouted at me for not being in the bike lane.
The Eastbound bike lane. I was going West.
He apologised. Swearing is quite cathartic. I feel great and I got an apology. Win:win.

@cyclegaz
"if he'd given you any more room he would've been on the other side of the road".
Well done you, for describing how to safely overtake another road user.
A wide, busy, main road with plenty of room to install a protected cycle track and still leave one traffic lane in each direction as at present - so no impact on flow of motor vehicles.
Let's get this made safe for kids to cycle to school.
Same story the world over; protected bike lanes make EVERYBODY safer, mandatory painted bike lanes contribute nothing, advisory painted lanes make the road MORE dangerous to cycle on.
Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. V/

Pointless MGIF of the day

He realised his mistake of leaving the cycle lane leading to the ASL open so made sure at the next light he pulled as far left as he could to prevent me filtering on the left. Which was pointless, plenty of space to filter on the right that way.

If those capable of walking or cycling short journeys do so, the roads will be much clearer for those who actually need a motor vehicle and there'll be more parking spaces when you get there.
@CatrellNeff
@michele_paule
Cars only cost a mere £3.5k per year because non car owners pay an extra £2.5k per year in taxes to subsidise them.
Maybe we could subsidise cargo bikes too? No VAT would be a saving of £1000
The replies from ignorant, angry drivers are why painted cycle lanes should be banned.
If you use it you'll be close passed. If you don't use it these guys are so angry they'll deliberately run you off the road.
🚲 An Edinburgh cyclist is urging drivers to be more careful when passing bikes.

How was it this easy to get injunctions making it illegal to block roads, but we've been waiting years for legislation (and enforcement) against drivers on pavements?
It's illegal to drive on or block a pavement.
Yet pavement parking is systemic and no action is ever taken.
Great thread about painted, advisory cycle lanes. They've been shown to do far more harm than good - INCREASING the risk of injury to cyclists by 34% according to one piece of research - and should all be removed. I try to avoid roads that have one whenever possible.
We never ran
#OpClosePass
where there was a cycle lane as it effectively gave offenders a "faux defence" of "well if it's dangerous, why is it designed like that?" which in light of the HC updates earlier this year is even more relevant than ever.

@Samuel_D_Harris
You don't understand:
- the purpose of mandatory insurance (for activities with a high risk of harm to others)
- how roads/cycle lanes are funded (drivers are heavily subsidised)
- the concept of "fair" (people who are subsidised demanding others pay more 🤦)
I don't understand why so many people are demanding the Conservative Party give £10million to a billionaire. He's the last person who needs it. Donate it to a charity such as Hope Not Hate or The Race Equality Foundation.
Buying a folding eBike was definitely a factor in giving up my car. Car Club and cheap rental deals for when I do need a car have helped too.
Study finds e-bikes may lead to people giving up cars and says they should be at core of planning
@AnnDuffieldnews
The cyclist is passing a horse rider - wide and slow like they're supposed to. Why is that a problem for you? Do you hate horses and horsey people as well as cyclists?
This wouldn't happen if... licence/test/insurance/number plates/MOT/"Road Tax"...
