🧵 Let's do a thread on action the Met Police have taken on my reports to them of bad driving.
My first RTC whilst filming, fined £450 and 6 points for careless driving.
Date: 12/2010
No: 1
Spent the last week in Paris, somewhere which has recently taken away road space for general traffic and built dedicated cycle lanes across the city.
Cycling has boomed as a result.
Let’s have a look at their infrastructure 🧵
Don’t forget that motorists cause the most havoc on our streets, all the talk about other road users transgressions is a distraction from the real users that cause harm.
In Nice, France they have these bike locks integrated into
@WorldBollard
from ShareLock. You can reserve in advanced, get notifications if someone tampers and get insurance if it’s stolen.
I'm shocked the Met Police issued an awareness course to this driver.
If I was not hyperaware, on a bike with hydraulic disk brakes, and extremely experienced at using said brakes, this would have resulted in a collision that would have left me with serious injuries.
Just passed £20k of fines to motorists from my reports to Met Police!!!
£20,376 in fines! 253 points on licenses! 35 motorists sent on driving courses!
Big shout out to
@SuptAndyCox
and his team for taking action on these reports.
Highway Code: "Drive at a speed that will allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear."
Motorists in low sun: (wait till the end)
This driver appealed their sentence of 5 years. The appeal was heard and their sentence reduced to 4 years.
He is a delivery driver.
He did this as revenge for a prior exchange of words.
He should never be allowed to drive again.
An insanely close pass by this van driver. It got issued the largest fine from any of my reports to date.
£1,200 fine and £470 court costs.
This was due to failing to notify the police who was driving.
I'm cycling at 20mph in a 20mph zone.
I get tailgated and tooted at why?
Because a
@TfLTPH
vehicle wants to speed and overtake me.
For some reason, they didn't sound their horn at the bus.
LJ14PZZ
Driver close passed me when I was doing more than the 20mph speed limit.
When I caught up, they suggested I had to get out of their way.
The Met Police sent them on a driving course.
Something about this driver just didn't sit right. So I slowed before we even got to the junction.
And as if I'm psychic, the van driver turns without indicating or giving way to vehicles in the bus lane.
The Met Police sent them on a driving retraining course.
Why don't cyclists want to ride in the door zone?
Please motorists, don't tailgate us and sound your horn because you can't overtake us on narrow roads
Yes
@Motorbikemilly
You tell that close passing bus driver!
This is something that many cyclists experience, most of us don't have a cool dog to put the bus driver in their place!
Thank you
@sainsburys
for parking in the segregated cycle lane, blocking the whole thing, outside your Croydon High Street branch.
The irony that your lorry has painted on the back a message about passing on the left, yet that is all I can do.
When should road users stop at zebra crossings?
3 motorists failed to slow down or even stop for this zebra crossing which had a child waiting on it to cross.
The one cyclist did slow and stop.
A lot of people getting worked up that I:
- scratched the cars (when I didn’t).
- I’m walking with my bike on the pavement.
The pavement is for more than just cars and bins. If I’m struggling to push a bike down here, how is a mother of twins in a side by side pushchair going to
If you build good quality infrastructure then you end up with cycle traffic jams!
Despite being stuck in it and slowed down, it brings a smile to my face.
@TheMrLoophole
Doesn’t look like you should be taking those corners at 60mph.
If it was a tractor would you be able to overtake?
For someone who calls him self Mr Loophole, you haven’t got a clue about how cyclists can use the roads legally.
Call me for driving lessons!
This driving instructor passed me too closely and was seen using their mobile phone whilst driving.
Result from court:
6 Penalty Points
£1,325 fine
PSA to all cyclists:
DO NOT USE A LIGHT LIKE THIS!
This is a bright 6Hz light that makes it almost impossible for anyone to see past you or judge your speed!
It would be great if drivers actually looked before they pulled out of a junction.
Good job I was aware of my surroundings and could take avoiding action.
Also, can anyone tell me how the taxi pulls away from me when I'm doing 22mph in a 20mph zone?
Paint is not infrastructure or protection.
Motorists will drive over it with no regard for others.
I reported this issue to
@WorldBollard
and 2 days later they had sent reinforcements!
What it's like to cycle in the UK.
You might get a cycle lane.
- Drivers will pull out into it without looking first
- Drivers will park in it when they shouldn't
- Drivers will drive and turn across it without looking.
PSA to cyclists: Motorists don’t have a sense of humour.
I nearly got hit by a motorist this morning. So I asked them why they got so close, as usually when people do that they want my number and to go for a coffee.
He did not find that amusing one bit and wanted a fight 😬😶🌫️
This is exactly why you must give cyclists space.
❌ Do not tailgate
❌ Do not pass closely
I am very fortunate that the
@TfL
bus had already passed me, as they did pass rather close in my opinion.
7.5 year jail sentence for doing 110mph, crashing and killing a passenger .
Also got a 12 year driving ban. Should be a lifetime ban.
If cars were invited today, no way would they not get speed limiters on them!!!
I'm doing 18mph in a 20mph zone
There's a headwind
There isn't space to overtake
DON'T SOUND YOUR HORN AT ME!
DON'T GIVE ME THE FINGER WHEN I MOVE OVER TO LET YOU PASS!
SHARE THE ROAD!
Just because you could be faster than me, doesn't mean you can be.
Average speed of traffic in London is lower than my average speed.
Good luck keeping up in the long run.
This harrowing footage shows the dangers posed by those who drive whilst under the influence. You are putting your life and the lives of others at risk.
The driver was sentenced to jail after running over a cyclist in broad daylight.
Full story:
Dear Motorists,
Please look what is coming along the cycle lane before you pull out and block it.
Please also look to see if you can clear the cycle lane before joining a queue of traffic that is barely moving.
Many Thanks,
Cyclists
I’ve spent the last 10 days in New York.
My third time there, and the first time I’ve actually ever got the chance to cycle there.
As a similar city to London, let’s review it from a cyclists point of view 🧵
As much as I would love to be in the Magic Circle.
I don't just disappear when you can't see me in front of you.
Please don't change lanes into me and brake.
Doing so could result like this driver. A FPN for careless driving, which is 3 penalty points and a £100 fine.
Peloton instructors take a spin with Mazda.
@onepeloton
's leading fitness coaches, Leanne and Ben, will be living with the all-electric
#MazdaMX30
for six months, experiencing how the model supports their active lifestyle.
Not a fan of vehicles with digital cameras as mirrors. Seen it on cars, buses and lorries.
How are you as a cyclist meant to see if the driver has seen you by looking at them in their mirrors?
A step down for road safety IMO.
The South Croydon Conservatives are actually against putting in bollards along here to protect cyclists from wandering motorists. They also think it will increase congestion. It's like this every morning!
@CroydonCyclists
Dear drivers: if you want to tailgate me when driving at the speed limit, go ahead.
I’ll slow down to a crawling pace, you can flash your lights, sound your horn and rev your engine all you like, you are causing a danger by tailgating and I’ll reduce the risk by driving slower.
Good quality cycling infrastructure is vital to allowing people to shift away from motor vehicles.
Look at how Vauxhall Bridge used to be, and look at it now!
It’s vital you leave enough stopping distance when following any road user.
Yet when I report people clearly not leaving a 2 second gap behind me, the police and CPS do nothing.
This is what the majority of my bicycle rides are like, boring.
I ride around 3 hours a day. When you see a 30 second clip of bad driving, that's likely the only thing from that day.
A small percentage, but hard to gauge unless you ride with me.
Cycling in London is great.
