Two days ago, Jack Monroe pointed out that she explicitly stated in her blog post Hunger Hurts II that she is no longer poor. A day later she claims to be earning less per hour as a food writer than a McDonalds employee. Will it ever make sense?

@JLewisland Chris de Burgh, La Trompette. My guest was wearing a red dress. He came over to our table and sang a chorus of 'Lady in Red' to her. I swear that is true. He completely ignored me, which got my back up. Also, I fucking hate that song.

@rhbBSE No, I'm done. I don't fancy any of the recipes from the book and I can't afford to make something just to chuck it away. I've proved the recipes are flawed and I have enough recipe writing and editing experience to know if one will work or not just by reading it.

Pastrami salmon, the finished product. The cured fish is painted with a mix of molasses, cayenne and bay then sprinkled with ground coriander, black pepper and sweet smoked paprika and finished with cracked black pepper, then fridged for 24 hours. Delicious.

To be fair to Monroe, she does say in the book she adapts other recipes. Other recipe writers also use a similar process. The issue in this case is apparently targeting the book at less well off people and charging them for something they can get for free.

I also think, can I buy it and save the time and energy cooking it myself which might work out even cheaper? Especially if the recipe is a budget version that may not be any better than what's already available. But then I'd be putting budget recipe writers out of a job. Shame.

A general tip for anyone writing budget recipes: simply half the amount of some of the ingredients to reduce the cost, you still get the same result. To take a random example, any amount of pastry will line any size of tart tin, so no need to make loads of it. Easy!

@nicmillerstale It also has no practical value for the recipe user at all. What difference does it make if its 51p or 50p per portion? Either way it's cheap. It's disingenuous - a tired trope to lend a faux authenticity to a certain style of recipe writing.
