With M.S. Swaminathan’s passing, we have lost a great scientist. There are many scientists whose life spans roles as researchers, institution-builders, technocrats, policy-makers, and humanists. Swaminathan is unique in doing all of these roles superbly and with élan.

This is a thread that all scientists must read. @elife is changing the way research is published, and this changes the role of peer review, as it is currently practised. A bold experiment.

Accepting and rejecting papers is an archaic practice that is terrible for science. It strips peer review of its value & institutionalizes the practice of judging scientists based on where, rather than what, they publish. It's time for this system to go.

@thattai is far too generous in appreciating his institution, in fact he enhances the award and his institution, not the other way around. Mukund’s ignores disciplinary barriers, has taught those who collide with him to think the same way. A true natural scientist, an outlier.

@IndiaBioscience IndiaBioScience has played an important role in the scientific community and in sc. communication. Its history is well-captured. But, Dr. Smita Jain's @SmitaJainIISc role is very understated. Her leadership is what brought @IndiaBioscience to its position. Much is owed to her.

Story: 1. Neurons in the brain are very chatty: they fire action potentials, their basic unit of communication, even when there is nothing to communicate. For example in this video, in visual cortex recordings in complete darkness. Lots of chatting:
