Was invited for a Women's Day talk at CSIR-NIGR Hyderabad. They asked one of their young scientists to take 3 hrs of her working day to "receive" me at the airport..she has a 3 yr old child too. Not the best way of spending her time. When will this practice end? So unnecessary.

TIFR students are paid by funds from the DAE, these are always released on time. But CSIR PhD fellowships and DBT/ DST grants are unpredictable- there doesn't seem to be a cycle for funding release. Solving this problem would be *the* first step for Indian science to flourish.

I agree completely. Students in India often refer to studies from abroad as "they showed this.." Or "in literature it is seen that.." or "a paper in Cell showed.." I ask them whether they wouldn't like to be named when someone abroad refers to the work they poured energy into?

Some years ago a student visited my lab to learn in utero electroporation. She had practiced the basic surgery beforehand, and had success in a week! Also made friends, had scientific discussions, became part of our lab-family. Now she MADE MY DAY. Posting with her ok.

Wonderful visit of former student Achira Roy @Achira2019 , now postdoc with @neurodevKathy . Gave a seminar "Modelling human PI3K-related brain disorders" and gifted me the most unusual ever locket and earrings with *her own data,* hippocampal CTIP2 expressing cells! Love it!

Lovely apartment @Napoli , an impromptu grocery trip, improvised "mum's curry" spice in veg pulao, delicious sausage add-on for non-veggies, Kaffir subbing for dahi..presto, dinner! B'fast: scrambled eggs+bell peppers, spinach, potato-onions-basil..had a blast cooking+eating tog!

My first visit to MSU Baroda...several of our Dept students/postdocs are alums of this wonderful Institute, and also two of our faculty who are on their Gold Medal list: Gotam Jarori (retd) and Sandhya Koushika (Kaushika on the board). A rich legacy for Indian science.
