Econ PhD programs need to provide health insurance that covers egg freezing. By the time an average female student go on the job market after a predoc + master’s + PhD, they will be in their early 30s, perhaps without a stable partner.
A genuine question: how do people master Stata? I learned tons from open source Python & R code. But the lack of training materials available online for Stata is shocking — no wonder chatGPT can’t write in Stata!
I’ve always thought the discussion Stata vs R vs Python is nonsense because I use all of them depending on the task.
However, ChatGPT not working for Stata makes me:
1. Happy I know enough Stata already.
2. Think Stata will even more likely become obsolete in the next few years
UMD Econ is recruiting for a new pre doc. Come spend one year gaining research experience with faculty mentors + taking classes, and stay for the PhD! This NSF-funded program is intended to increase diversity in econ and builds on our undergrad pipeline program. Apps due 3/22.
It’s funny how some people in academia encourage privileged students to go outside and have some world experiences for research while collectively ignoring students’ voice from third world countries with plenty “world experience” — gender inequality, violence, poverty etc.
2015: pre-law
2016: history + math majors and love it
2017: senior thesis in history + real analysis
2018: dropped out & got depressed
2019: LSAT + graduated
2020: need to figure out my life
2021: econ research is FUN!
2022: predoc
2023: predoc
2024: PhD!
honestly putting the number of female faculty members in the department on the first slide for Econ PhD visit day is a huge selling point.
#EconTwitter
once you pass a certain follower threshold you simply cannot have normal interactions on twitter. You’ll say “such a relief to get a sunny day between all this rain 😊” and someone will screenshot it for their followers and tweet “climate change denialism at its peak”
@HealthEconBlerd
I agree with you that programs should provide a variety of choices, including maternity leave and subsidized childcare.
But not everyone can find a suitable partner during their PhD, esp when they are moving to a new city every 2 year.
For pre-pre docs who are actively seeking predocs, here are some good resources covering the basic tech skills you may need for your technical assessments.
@emileigharrison
has been a great mentor for me. I learned a ton from creating beautiful visualizations to cultivating a positive lab environment. Everyone please check out her work on the economics of representation, homeschooling, and college access! Congrats!!🍾🎈🎊

I don’t know about the exact number, but with 61k twitter followers, you are among the 0.1% influencers, who brought so much joy to the community😊
I got curious about online harassment research, and turned out I need a white man savior with a large number of followers to reduce the number of slurs I got.
@MarthaF_F
1) a brief introduction to different topics studied by economists, accompanied by a reading list; and 2) introduce several papers (or at least mention) that challenge a simple model. Econ was one of my majors in undergrad and I had no idea what it studies until my master’s.
It’s 2024. No one really wants to ask female economists how they balance family and career. All we want to know is where to freeze eggs and what are the cheapest reliable options.

Syllabus & slides for my course on Practicalities of Running RCTs up on my RunningREs website. Based on my book with Kudzai but updated for PhDs doing RCTs for their thesis & masters students. Power, IRBs, measurement, partners etc. Use course tab
@pavas222
I think predocs have a very different selection standards than PhD. Coding is way more important for a predoc if you are doing the applied work. If they have exceptional specialized technical skills in Python, ML, deep learning etc, they will stand out.
🚨New AI for Humanists tutorials just dropped!🚨
We have code notebooks for using LLMs to:
- measure document similarity
- classify texts with zero-shot prompting
We explore narrativity in texts, historical & ChatGPT poetry, and book reviews.

I’m planning on using lugless to ship boxes too! It seems to be the cheapest option based on my research. For bikes, I would take them with me on the Amtrak train… (I’m taking my harp with me on the Amtrak.)
@KhoaVuUmn
If they have a US undergrad with relative good grades in math and econ and ok letters, it’s likely they will get in. But I think at least more than 1/3 students outside top 20 Econ programs are international students with non-US undergrads.
@MarthaF_F
@HarvardEcon
Interesting! In my experience, if you go to a public university in the US in undergrad and are a competitive candidate, you have a higher chance getting into a top 20-30 econ PhD than getting a pre-doc. It would be a different story if you hold a master.
Dear Google,
We'd be happy to send along a copy of Thinking Clearly with Data.
Page 110, containing definitions of some of the key terms from Chapter 6, may be of particular help.

I will be so jealous! I recently found a great place for chai in Hyde Park so if you ever visit UChicago I need to bring you there
@instrumenthull
@JhengShao
@MGF91
I’m so jealous seeing what current undergrads are learning at metrics class😭 I didn’t learn any of this at my undergrad metrics class.
@Econ_4_Everyone
Woohoo!! Thank you!!! I wonder if you actually got the shirt between 1984-1988, instead of the years Brockington served? The collar on the jersey tricked me!
@mlarreboure
that’s a good idea :) I’ve been always afraid of being judged so I refrain from asking these questions unless we are in the same research group. But it’s worth trying for sure
@pavas222
Many people I know don’t get perfect math grades, including me. Do not let that stop your passion. And don’t discount your personal experience. They all matter for your research, once you get into the programs.
@ShuklaAngira
I have similar experiences. People of my ethnicity, tell me my research was of “foreign influence,” in my native language. I think that’s how they learn to talk to women in the old world, and can’t deal with anyone who may challenge their authority.
@JhengShao
I understand why they hire students from elite institutions — prior relevant RA experience with professors and easily interpretable transcripts. Some professors also have a regional focus - so they hire students who can speak a particular language. These are exceptions.
@MarthaF_F
I always wondered why you are interested in tax policy because I also h8 filing tax and did not enjoy the process of reading treaties, documents… but apparently you knew something about tax econ / law that I don’t!!
@markyzaguirre
@maya_sen
@mattyglesias
Tons of litigation lawyers with insufficient statistics/math training argue in court with empirical evidence they (mis)interprete. People only pay attention to high profile cases.
@MarthaF_F
@pavas222
Good to know;) I may use it next time … my current bike was totaled and I’ve been waiting to buy a new one once I move to Cambridge. It’s hard to live without a bike for months!
@itsafronomics
I’m so sorry you are experiencing this. I didn't close my comment section, and some tweets are full of hatred and misogynistic comments. A reminder of the world we are living in.
@toniwhited
@Andrew___Baker
Haha, that’s how I feel about Madison. I had a great time as an undergrad at Madison, but I was so eager to get out to explore the big cities. I just visited Princeton a few days ago for a PhD program. It’s gorgeous! Maybe I will change my opinions if I live there longer…
@MarthaF_F
Correction:
@ShuklaAngira
just informed me that BFI predoc’s salary is $62k. In Chicago you can live a luxurious life. I didn’t realize this 🥲
@MarthaF_F
more “scientific” explanation I guess. after all, some people don’t even believe in misogyny. As they say, it’s just a different opinion …. LOL
@MarthaF_F
When I did my admitted phd student visits, they arranged the lunch table by subfield. Of course, I was at the table (dev econ) with 6 other women and 1 man. All other subfields have 1~2 women + all men. Pretty divided. 😂
@MarthaF_F
I think it’s triggering for multiple reasons 1) a fraction of liberals and conservatives don’t like “artificial babies,” including egg freezing & IVF. 2) conservatives think it’s an opportunity to take down higher edu. 3) guys get insecure bc women don’t need them to have kids.
@DSchindlerEcon
@KhoaVuUmn
I heard that’s exactly how the opportunity insights lab (ironically) at Harvard selected their predoc candidates. Not exactly 50 points, but some extra bonus points.
@salonigupta435
@StanfordKingCtr
I’m so happy for you!!! I remember last year at AEFP you talked about your experience going to the do the field work with your PhD stipend… all hard work paid off!!! 💗💗
@reformedbear25
@HealthEconBlerd
Well, many current female job candidates are childless and single. What do you suggest them to do if they want to have the option to have kids at later stages in their lives?
@toniwhited
@Andrew___Baker
Absolutely agree Madison is amazing. beautiful lake, mountains, independent bookstores, great student centers, walkable, friendly to bikers. My second best college town is Princeton!
@AlisonBaulos
@kearney_melissa
I love the book “Promises I Can Keep: Why Poor Women Put Motherhood Before Marriage” written by 2 amazing sociologists. Maybe you will be interested in it too!
@lymanstoneky
I think that’s an interesting point. Thanks for sharing. I would appreciate it when you engage in a convo with a specific person online, don’t use passive aggressive words like “hoo boyo.”
