Here's a good-faith-effort at what historic religious mix in Israel-Palestine has looked like over the last 2000 years. Since 1500 the data is pretty good, since 1800 pretty much uncontested. But pre 1500 there's a fair amount of guesswork involved.

Just a reminder folks that academic research on Ebola, SARS, and 1918 Spanish flu all showed that quarantine efforts do reduce R0, flatten the epidemic curve, and thus save lives. The 1918 case includes travel restrictions and found them effective!

Why is this important? Well, studying masking is hard. It's easy to randomly assign individuals to wear masks and see if they get more/less sick over time. But that's a dumb study, because the relevant question is *community* masking not *individual* masking.

As the seasons get funkier, this strategy gets harder and harder. You have to pursue game further, cross more distance, and ultimately you have to store more of your surplus. If you don't increase storage, you starve to death, because periods of zero game/berries get more common.

Russia has been very clear: they see NATO expansion to Ukraine as a dangerous provocation. In the meantime, they have invaded Georgia, sent troops across the Estonian border, and maintained a decades-long occupation of Moldova and Georgia. Which is why NATO expands.

The thing is that hunting and gathering is quite seasonally dependent. You have to move around a lot to follow where the edible plants and game are at given points in the season. You do leave behind caches of excess food where you can, but storage is tricky.
