My article with Richard Avramenko on The Politics of Suicide: Miasma and Katharmos in Plato’s Political Thought is now live at Perspectives on Political Science! I’ll place the link below, and please let me know if you don’t have access.
Plato: in my book, I used the allegory of the cave as a cautionary tale
Tech company: at long last, we have created Plato’s Cave from the classic book Plato’s Republic.
I will never in my life get this lucky at a thrift store again. Three pairs of Allen Edmonds, one pair of Mezlan ostrich leather loafers, all in my size, $35.
@hasanthehun
You said, quote, “a real job doesn’t suck the soul out of you, you know what I mean?” Which is a weird thing for a socialist to say given what, uh, socialists have to say about wage labor. Maybe if you got off your computer and read a book or talked to a human you’d know things.
Reddit is flooded with students asking various subreddits how to deal with professors accusing them of generative AI use in their writing during this finals period. Professors are wondering how to deal with obvious generative AI use in their grading. We broke something.
One feature of these ridiculous podcasts is that they aren’t just serving a disaffected audience, they are actively *trying* to make you disaffected if you aren’t yet. Oh, you’re in a happy marriage? Have you, uh, considered your wife might have lied to you for a decade???
@NoLore
When our family car was stolen, we lost car seats, diaper bags, a stroller (a gift for the birth of our newborn), loved stuffed animals, children’s books, etc. The thieves then used our car to go break into other homes and cars and multiply the effect. Victimless? Really?

Impressive, very nice. Now let’s see traffic accidents in giant trucks by comparison, with all pedestrian deaths included.
I am slowly becoming Jordan Peterson in the sense that there are things I can barely speak without being overcome with emotion. There are poems I can’t recite, stories I can’t describe, without needing to collect myself. He’s often made fun of for this, but I appreciate it.
@NoLore
Yes, Nora, when people have children they drive them places (which requires car seats), take them out of the car (which requires a stroller), try to entertain them (with books and stuffed animals), and have resources to change and feed them (hence the diaper bag).
The good responses to this: “here is why Rothko is good, actually.”
The suggestive responses to this: “you just had to be there, bro.”
The absolutely ludicrous responses to this: “YOU JUST DON’T KNOW HOW TO FEEL THINGS IF ORANGE SQUARE DON’T MAKE YOU FEEL YOU ARTISTIC BUFFOON.”
@kidology_co
You know she has a really decent voice, she could have gone the Taylor Swift route and used her parents' exorbitant wealth to pay for a manager and studio time and a record deal, and here she is instead.
@WhickTv
I don't think it's hyperbolic. Take-home/online writing assignments are functionally broken as tools of teaching and assessment. Solutions are to go low-tech with in-class assignments, handwritten or oral exams (hard), or to design assessments useful in an AI world (harder).
I’m all for “Nietzsche is not a nazi” readings, but turning Nietzsche into some kind of philosopher of self-improvement has been a disaster for the human race.
You’re happily committed to one woman for life, raising children, living in bliss? Have you, uh, considered that you’re hardwired to sleep around and you’re a low-value male if you don’t??? These guys are losers. Ignore them.
This tweet went nuts! it was an off-the-cuff response to watching Netflix's "Made You Look" documentary. I am genuinely seeking to understand why people love it, and I am willing to say calling Rothko's work "childish" was wrong.
I always hate posting serious tweets, but my father is in the ICU in diabetic ketoacidosis and suffering from pneumonia. He’s on a ventilator but his oxygen levels are dropping. If you’re the praying type I would greatly appreciate it.
It has come to my attention that Madison freaking Cawthorn has the Latin phrase “Invictus Maneo” tattooed on his flesh in FAKE GREEK. ΜΛΝΣΘ means NOTHING MY DUDE

Tell me you don’t know anything about the film industry without telling me you don’t know anything about the film industry

“The problem with Narnia is the economy is unexplained. Mr. Tumnus has a bunch of academic books, but we never hear about any book binderies, or see any shops that sell books where he got them. What kind of money do they have in Narnia, anyway?”
Working through Narnia again, just about to begin The Last Battle. Before I do, registering a thought: The Horse and His Boy has remained my favorite book, but the best character in the series is Puddleglum, followed narrowly by Reepicheep. No one else close.

Homeschooling is very rarely done entirely solo. They’re quite adept at community organization, in ways online socialists should be envious of. My high school physics was taught by a professional engineer, chemistry by a PhD chemist.
Orange County churches are the future of faith in America. Gym, cafe, sports courts— tons of people just hanging out all day. You don’t see this in any other church community
Soho House for people with a soul that you actually want to talk to.
If you see this tweet, I promise this is more important: I went to college with Madison before he flunked out. He stole from my dorm and harassed and assaulted women, my friends. He’s a dirtbag regardless of what he tattooed on himself.
@glitterjesss
Weird cuz I’m watching a documentary that suggests multiple fake rothko’s were sold as real and included in compendiums of his confirmed works, which would suggest they are not, in fact, impossible to replicate?
Every time someone builds a building, they get to decide “will I make an ugly building, or a building that is not ugly?” And a shocking number of times, they choose ugly!
In 2006, Sam Harris said that “at some point… it’s just going to be too embarrassing to believe in God.” In 2022, I say we’ve reached the point that it’s too embarrassing to take anything Sam Harris says seriously.
If we can convince all the pop stars to start referencing political philosophers in their music, we can bootstrap our way out of a job crisis. Demand will skyrocket. This is the future.
I am a certified teacher with a Master’s degree. I am not qualified to homeschool my daughter.
I can’t teach upper level Science or Math.
There may be folks out there who have no choice, but we have to state facts. I don’t know many who are experts in every subject.
I know I'm just adding to the pile-on at this point, but surely studio execs realize that LOTR has a BIT of a different audience than Game of Thrones and will adjust accordingly.
An academic journey in mugs:
After two wonderful years at Clemson, I’m excited to say that in the fall I will be joining the faculty at Covenant College as an Assistant Professor of Political Science! Emma and I are so excited to head back to Tennessee (well, close enough).
I recall a conversation with my undergrad college president where I asked how he felt in terms of academic freedom, going from teaching at an Ivy to a school with a rigid statement of faith. His response: “Every school has a statement of faith. Some just write them down.”
Religious schools also routinely bar speech that contradicts their religious beliefs. They are the most repressive educational institutions in America, and if private liberal arts colleges acted similarly, we would never hear the end of it.
This article is based on the testimony of women that I consider friends. Their experiences with Madison Cawthorn and his communications director Micah Bock speak for themselves.
NEW: College classmates of Madison Cawthorn say he harassed women students. BuzzFeed News spoke with more than 30 people, who described and corroborated instances of sexual harassment and misconduct by the now–member of Congress.
@esjay100
This is so silly.
@michaeljknowles
was absolutely correct on this in his conversation with Pearl (a very silly human). The implicit accusation directed at his wife ought to be offensive to any honorable man.
@RationalMale
@BrittanyVenti
You are a vile excuse for a man and your daughter ought to be ashamed of you and your behavior. You’re nearly 20 years my senior, maybe it’s time you act like it.
Newark is working on an ordinance that would restrict the practice of feeding homeless people who live on the street.
“All violators will be ticketed and fined,” a spokeswoman for the city’s mayor said.

If a man is as normal as this person is describing, and his first resort is to seek a woman abroad, he’s not as normal as this person is describing.
Eventually you think you've exhausted Christopher Lee trivia, and then you learn that he was an altar server at St Stephen's Church in South Kensington, London while T.S. Eliot was a parishioner. That's right, Saruman served T.S. Eliot Christ's body and blood.
Here's an example: If I had simply said "so what's up with Mark Rothko? Why do people like him?" I would have gotten approx. zero responses. But because I, in my ignorance, called his work "childish," Rothko became a trending topic at 3am this morning!
@HAHazony
Most things on Reddit are fake, but the deluge of “I did a dumb thing and ruined my life” posts suggests to me that at least some of these things actually happen, and it distresses me.
I'm happy to admit where I'm ignorant and learning, but the fact that a little poke and prod hyperbole against a popular artist can create so much outrage with so little effort is a SPECTACULARLY BAD THING
