I often ask women who have migrated to more gender equal countries, “what’s the biggest difference?” They overwhelmingly tell me it’s being able to walk around freely, look up, and make eye contact, without fear. That’s a core part of the Great Gender Divergence.

I've written another Tiny Textbook on Development Studies. It discusses key challenges (poverty, inequality, & violence); organising, insurgencies, right-wing populism; global supply chains; & the impacts of COVID. Reading suggestions are very welcome!

Let me make a broader meta-point: Since the 1970s, feminist anthropologists, archaeologists & historians have tried to show that women had agency, mattered & did stuff. This has sometimes blinkered our understanding of actually existing inequalities & differences.

"Worldwide survey kills the myth of Man the Hunter" Lots of publicity for this very biased study. Claims women hunt in roughly 80% of surveyed forager groups. But is silent on men hunting more and differently in 100%.

The very poorest Americans are just as poor as poor Europeans. But above the 50th percentile, US households are much much richer and live a very different lifestyle. Charts by the great @jburnmurdoch

I don’t think Europeans—or at least French people—envy American economic success. But that’s because they’re in denial/uninformed of the growing gap. That gap, to be fair, has greatly expanded over the last 15 years and it may take time for people to know about it.

This is one of my favourite books Mokyr argues that a positive feedback loop was forged by celebrating innovations & connecting scientists, entrepreneurs & artisans. If you buy that, you surely accept that women were disadvantaged through their exclusion from these networks..?

Does disdain for women increase the pay gap? Yes Evidence from Google In US states where search terms are often misogynist, employers are probably more prejudiced, and women earn less than men. Elizabeth Malony, JMP.

Female teenagers are increasingly anxious and depressed. @JonHaidt raises an important risk, which I haven’t seen anyone discuss. What will this mean for gender inequality at work? Will poor mental health make them less competitive and innovative?

Why is the USA an outlier? The USA had near universal labour force participation in the 1960s, but now has the lowest in the OECD [dotted black line]
