Your Monday must-read. @nicolesjchung asks: "Who gets to be a writer or an editor? Who can choose to prioritize their creative goals, take potentially career-making risks, invest precious years in this work without the guarantee of financial stability?"

All summer, I've been working on this feature about the rise of mythological retellings, and I'm so proud of it. Who gets to tell mythological stories? Who is mythology even for? This new boom of novels invites us to explore these ancient questions.

In this terrific essay, @Rainesford writes: "I wrote the book on the side. But it felt like the center. If writing was happening in what some might call margins of my life, did that inherently make it a hobby—or was it actually what knit my life together?"

@bookoisseur After a man tried to drag me into an alley, he chased me. I ran into the first business I saw--a bodega. He came in after me, but the owner shooed him out. He gave me space while I pulled myself together (I was sobbing), then insisted I take water and tissues, free of charge.
