There's nothing I could write about Eddie Van Halen today that I didn't already write when he was alive. But he was my favorite guitar player, and I guess he still is (and probably always will be).
The thing is, selling books is really weird now. Selling 1 book before the release date seems way more important than selling 5 books the month after it's been in stores. If I were smart, I would tour while I'm still writing the book and just type on-stage.
So it looks like this new book of mine is already available for pre-order. Some of you will really like it. Some of you will really not. Most of you won't particularly care either way. That's how it works. It's a good system.
This is a black and white photograph. Only the lines have colour.
What you “see” is what your 🧠 predicts the reality to be, given the imperfect information it gets.
If I’m on the committee, here’s my argument: Notre Dame was idle and falls to 4 (not a criticism). Georgia’s losing performance still warrants elevation to the 3 seed. Best possible playoff scenario, most accurate overall talent assessment.
Do you need a Father’s Day gift in less than 48 hours? Does your dad like to remember stuff and express ambivalent feelings about those memories?
The Nineties: A Book
@ALionEye
Your opinion wasn't that bad, but I didn't intend to like the tweet. I was looking at my phone without my glasses and brushed the button accidentally. So probably a push for you.
2/8 @ 5 pm (PT) —Chuck Klosterman (

It's now roughly one month (33 days, technically) until the official release of THE NINETIES, although preorders might arrive early. If you're curious about what's covered in the book, here's an incomplete (but mostly complete) breakdown:
The book comes out a week from today, prompting me to make this. It’s six hours long, so if you order the book immediately and listen to this playlist 28 consecutive times, you’ll be crescent fresh.
All these looong 3-pointers got me thinking:
Is it easier to get second-chance opportunities because of the long rebound?
Turns out, it’s a real thing. And it has big implications on the future of the NBA. Introducing the BOGO 3:
If you pre-order my book (or if you've already done so), you can fill out the little form on the link accompanying this tweet and the publisher will immediately send you a digital copy of one of the stories:

This book becomes available in paperback on January 31. If you order it now it will probably show up at your house on that day. If you don't order it, it probably won't, unless your mailman is bad at his job.
So this is a bit curious: I'm doing a reading (and being interviewed) in north Portland, in some random woman's living room, reading excerpts from a new book I won't release until 2019. Space is limited (25 seats). Info here:
For some reason my new book is currently selling for $11.12 in hardcover, which is somehow $14.88 less than the list price? I don't know why this is but I thought I'd mention it.
Interesting oral histories about movies are typically about projects that failed. This is an interesting oral history about a project that actually succeeded. It feels the way the movie feels.
The pop landscape had changed so radically that appreciating the musical style pioneered by Van Halen has become akin to appreciating recent breakthroughs in blacksmithing
I was going to go on a normal three-week tour for this book, theoretically scheduled (last autumn) on the assumption that American society would be somewhat stable by now. But that does not appear to be happening, so here's what remains ...
Also, the first 500 people who do this will get a "signed book plate." Which is just a sticker that I signed with a Sharpie. But you can adhere this sticker to the inside cover, and this magically turns your book into a "limited first edition," increasing its eventual eBay value.
I'm doing a book event at Powell's City of Books next Tuesday (Feb. 7) at 7 pm. I haven't done one of these in awhile so we'll see how it goes. It's free.

It was written by my wife, which I realize might make you skeptical of my motives. I would be skeptical, too. But you have to trust me here: this book is not only a deep meditation on DAZED AND CONFUSED, but on ‘90s indie filmmaking in general. [2]
Ok, the book event I was doing last Friday that was cancelled by the blizzard is now happening THIS Friday. It's still at 7 pm, and it's still at the B & N in Hillsboro (the Hillsboro in Oregon, not the Class B basketball power in ND).
Due to the amount of snow and the limitations of the Portland infrastructure, my event tonight at the Barnes and Noble in Hillsboro has been postponed. I think it will probably happen next week. It’s 50/50

The portrait of Richard Linklater is probably the most complete I’ve ever read, at least in terms of how he views high school, actors and actresses, and the process of movie making. But that’s only a fraction of what makes this compelling. [3]

The thing that is really astonishing about this book is (a.) the emotional resonance that is still obviously felt by the various performers, and (b.) the sheer amount of interviewing that went into this project. [4]
@ChrisCarrollDC
In the dream, did you actually read the book? Or was it one of those dream scenarios where you just kinda vaguely knew it had happened?

I was supposed to do this event with S. Crosley tonight, but I am still testing positive for that thing that stops you from pursuing activities like talking to S. Crosley in public. Everyone else should still go, though.
