and improving doctors' & NHS working conditions. K2BK.
We’re ready and waiting for you to get round the table.
We offered you dates to meet this week, you refused.
You have not offered any dates to meet.
You have not offered a potential deal.
You have not offered any way out.
But you can still stop the strikes.
Be reasonable.
The NHS sees more pressure than usual over Easter and the 4 day junior doctors' strike threatens to cause significant disruption.
I urge
@BMA_JuniorDocs
to call off strikes and get back around the table to find a fair offer. Read more

In 2008, doctors were paid £20/h in today’s money
After 15 years of cuts, doctors are now paid £15/h in today’s money
We want doctors to go back to being paid £20/h in today’s money
We’re not asking for that to happen in one go/ one year
What’s unreasonable about this?
“With junior doctors, I want to do a deal”
Health Secretary Victoria Atkins says she want junior doctors taking strike action to come back to the negotiating table with “reasonable expectations” about pay
#BBCLauraK
Hi
@BimAfolami
Happy to chat about how your government have shut us out of negotiations
And even now, with no strikes, they still won’t negotiate with us
And how previous to striking we were basically told we’d be ignored until we had a strike ballot
1/
“They should come to the table and stop these strikes which are having a huge negative impact on waitlists”
The Conservatives’ Bim Afolami defends the government's record on NHS waiting lists, suggesting junior doctor strikes are to blame
#bbcqt
Full pay restoration would see an F1 at £20.63ph today
… which would still be the lowest on the list
Not at all suggesting other professions should be paid less (nurses, domestics unequivocally need fair pay too)
But when govt says FPR is unfair or unreasonable… 🤔
Merry Christmas to all those working in the NHS today
Many staff in the NHS are grossly underpaid (even on Christmas day👇) but none more so than Junior Doctors who frequently graduate with >£100k debt
RT to support them & ask government to pay them ALL fairly
#PayRestoration
Have you read your own article?
It quotes me saying “we remain open to entering talks with government anytime and anywhere”
It’s you stonewalling us with nonsensical preconditions
It’s you who didn’t turn up on friday
It’s you who won’t make us an offer
I urge
@BMA_JuniorDocs
to come to the negotiating table.
We owe it to junior doctors and patients to agree a fair settlement which recognises the hard work & vital role of junior doctors and wider economic pressures.

We have arrived at our pre agreed deadline
Despite intense negotiations, the Government have not been able to put forward a credible offer
Our committee has voted unanimously to call for further strike action
📢 STRIKE DATES ANNOUNCEMENT📢 Junior doctors in England to take further
#PayRestoration
industrial action.
The first strike action will take place from 7am on 20 December to 7am on 23 December. The second will take place from 7am on 3 January until 7am on 9 January.
Disappointingly, despite hearing about further offers from the Government, and a readiness to re-enter talks within 20 minutes which transpired to take more than 20 days,
The Government have failed to table a new pay offer and therefore we are calling for further strike action
Doctors, we pulled out all the stops to avert this round of strikes.
We asked the health secretary to extend our strike mandate for four weeks so we could keep talking in good faith. But she declined, leaving us no choice but to announce a 5-day full walkout from 24-28 Feb.
The longest NHS strike in history continues
A strike that didn’t need to go ahead
But unfortunately our government is belligerent and ideological
Doctors have had pay cut by more than 31% in real terms since 2008
All we want, is go back to neutral, net zero to ‘08
It is
@SteveBarclay
who created this deadlock, and he also has the power to remove it
All we want, all we have ever wanted, is to talk, meaningfully, about
#PayRestoration
We don’t need to strike, but we need to know he’s serious - right now, that’s a credible offer
Yesterday JDC co-chairs received a letter from the health secretary – in which he introduced a pre-condition to give up our negotiating position and call off strike action.
Our response below makes it clear that without any credible offer next week’s strikes will continue.
“We basically rig those anyway”
Supposedly independent pay review body
That has just suggested a 6% uplift to recover a >31% real terms pay cut.
@RishiSunak
‘refusing’ to talk now
But
#FullPayRestoration
doesn’t stop here
@BMA_JuniorDocs
remain in dispute. Strike continues
In today's
@politico
London playbook via
@theipaper
- confirming in plain English what
@TheBMA
has been saying for so long - there is nothing independent about the "independent" pay review bodies. Don't fall for nominative determinism.
#TellThemAgain
Steve wouldn’t meet us whilst striking. Wrote to us ~10pm on the Fri before and the minute after our strikes ended.
But now we are talking dates, seems he’s back to stalling.
We accepted tomorrow,the next day, and next week. He’s still yet to confirm.
Let’s see if he turns up
Any route to help break the deadlock that
@SteveBarclay
has created is welcome
Important for those with reservations surrounding 2016 - Acas can bring the govt to the table. They do not move/ recommend negotiating positions or deals. We are happy to negotiate. Just need SB there
The Government has consistently refused offers to meet and put up further obstacles to prevent meaningful talks occurring.
We are now asking
@DHSCgovuk
to agree to the arbitration service,
@acasorguk
, facilitating talks so we can move towards a resolution.
@TTOTrainee
@VictoriaAtkins
@TheBMA
@RobLaurensonD4P
Negotiations have not restarted despite the seemingly abundantly clear position the Government were ready.
We are waiting and ready to restart as soon as they are.
We will keep doctors updated with developments.
Laughable thought really
@BMA_JuniorDocs
most representative it’s ever been with highest engagement in recent elections (10x compared to 2 years ago)
On the ground:
7k more doctors voted FOR strike action (after ave 8.8% award) in Aug vs Feb ballot (43k Vs 36k). Both 98% yes
Health Secretary Victoria Atkins tells Radio 4 that junior doctors should ask themselves whether the
@BMA_JuniorDocs
committee is representing their best interests after (as she describes it) walking out of talks with Gov and calling nine days of strike action
Consultants have passed their ballot.
Yes: 86%
Turnout: 71%
The Government faces a unified profession.
Time for them to take pay seriously and end the dispute now.
Junior doctors, our ballot is still open - please return yours today.
Say it louder.
#TellThemAgain
.
We are ready (as ever) to speak.
We have never ignored a request to meet.
We have never cancelled a planned meeting.
We never walked away.
Unfortunately none of those are true for Sunak/ Barclay
This was a more representative take:
@BMA_JuniorDocs
Junior doctors are set to go on strike for five days from Thursday 13th July.
This will be the longest walkout in NHS history.
It's time for a new approach to end disruptive strikes.
We're urging the government and unions to enter arbitration to break the current deadlock.
It’s difficult to understand why we were
- not invited
- then actively excluded
From a key meeting about doctors in training (& LED) when we are representative of the largest majority, and we have evidence of the detriment the currently planned rollout of MAPs is having on them
We are extremely disappointed
@AoMRC
has excluded
@TheBMA
from a meeting to discuss MAPs and doctors in training despite the inclusion of other key stakeholders including
@NHSEngland
,
@gmcuk
and ATDC. [1/3]
Disheartening to see snippets of
@RCPhysicians
EGM
Seems their senior leader motives aren’t in the general interest of their members, other doctors, even public safety.
It’s dangerous when anyone, let alone those in power, refuse to genuinely reassess when concerns are raised
Govt claim
#FullPayRestoration
is ‘unaffordable’
But actually the cost of FPR, £1bn, seen as a ‘rounding error’ especially with a treasury budget of >£1000 billion.
The cost of not providing FPR? Doctors leave. Patients lose out on care. Waiting lists continue to rise.
Would a 10% pay rise be fair and reasonable? -
@SophyRidgeSky
"No, it wouldn't", says the BMA's
@RobLaurensonD4P
, adding that a pay rise would need to be more than 10% as doctors have had a 'pay erosion of 31.7% over 15 years.'
#Ridge
📺 Sky 501
Another fantastic thread highlighting the key issue at hand
Doctors’ pay has been slashed, brutally, by ~26% in real terms over the past 15 years.
This has not happened to other workers.
All we want is to restore what we’ve lost, and I would support anyone else to do the same
1/ NEW & IMPORTANT: OK on the eve of junior/consultant strikes, we need to talk about these charts (NEW data just in!) 👇
We need to look at them to fix waiting lists & its increasingly clear next GE will be won or lost on the NHS
Please read the whole 🧵 & share widely / RT
Language changing.
It used to be “both sides” need to come together
Now it is “government must…”
Realisation of where the roadblocks to this dispute lie are now being shared by senior NHS officials
#NHS
trusts are pulling out all the stops to provide safe patient care as junior doctors prepare for a third day of strikes.
But with over 540,000 patient appointments delayed since December, this situation isn't sustainable.
Government must find a way forward with the unions.
Doctors are worried about the pace of expansion of a lesser trained workforce being used as doctor substitutes
It’s unsafe for patients
It further degrades doctors
It puts unfair expectations on associate professions
If that’s not the plan then no issue, but…
We’re asking for pay cuts, which are 10x worse than average worker, to be reversed
This looks like doctors who are currently paid £15ph to instead be paid £20ph
And the kicker, which you conveniently keep forgetting to mention, is we’re very ok to implement over a few years
2/
Waiting list:
Yes, went down in Nov, as it has every winter for every year in the past decade +, whilst still trending up
Lack of strikes not a determining factor
If it was, what about Oct?
@BMA_JuniorDocs
striked with
@BMA_Consultants
but still waiting lists went down
5/
What is truly unreasonable, is that instead of working towards a deal to reverse pay cuts, the Government would rather waste >£2bn (and counting) on strikes
This is more than if they decided to restore our pay with immediate effect
(Which to remind you, we’re not demanding)
3/
No wonder doctors subjected to this sort of culture whilst being paid as little as £14ph are “leaving and not coming back”
Leaving the devaluation
Leaving the disrespect
Leaving the NHS
Absolutely atrocious behaviour from the health board
‘Knowing’ who is working in advance of strike action is UNSAFE as doctors can change their mind at any time
The SAFE thing for
@CV_UHB
is to assume all eligible doctors are striking and plan appropriately
It appears
@CV_UHB
have doubled down on their threats despite
@BMA_WJDC
raising the issue to them. This email has only just gone out. Our doctors will not be threatened. We require a full retraction and apology

@SteveBarclay
@BMA_JuniorDocs
If
@SteveBarclay
and
@RishiSunak
think 5% is genuinely a ‘fair and reasonable offer’ to reverse a >26% real terms pay cut, they have a lot of reflection to do.
What is hugely disruptive is the exodus of drs when they’re underpaid or not valued.
We’re ready to talk anytime.
Today, we announce a 3rd round of industrial action from 14 – 17 June.
The Government’s 5% pay increase offer is an insult to junior doctors in England.
Govt wants to restrict ability to strike with Minimum Services Level bill
We know strikes have been safe
Your evidence could prevent unlawful use of MSL
I responded to the consultation, took 5 minutes
Have you?
@TheBMA
@BMA_JuniorDocs
@Doctors_Vote
And what about May 2023?
There were no doctor strikes but the waiting list still went up by 100k
There is a total failure in
-valuing staff
-retaining an effective workforce
-getting the waiting list down
Govt hasn’t just wasted £2bn, but up to £73bn over the next 5 years

We knew the government would try to wait us out.
They can try all they want.

Today the (Junior) Doctors Committee has taken the first steps to securing a reballot.

In Oct, £1 invested = £4 gain. Now £14
@RishiSunak
needs to accept reversing paycuts/ paying doctors fairly is the only way to build back our workforce, tackle the waiting list, increase productivity, grow the economy
Excellent thread succinctly describing how the people in charge of our healthcare are slowly destroying it
Not only are we not training enough doctors
But of the ones that are training/ are trained, more and more are getting fed up with this system and leaving
Based on some recent conversations, I felt like a thread was needed on some of the issues surrounding medical training, and how they intersect with the long term workforce plan.
Buckle in for a long one

As the

@SteveBarclay

#FullPayRestoration
Disappointingly, he had no mandate to make us an offer of any sort to help resolve it
The contempt.
Just days before our 72-hour strike, it's incredibly disappointing to hear
@SteveBarclay
admit he hasn't got the authority or the green light from Rishi Sunak to negotiate with us.
Full statement:
#PayRestoration
Hit pieces are at least understandable as a feeble attempt to sow division between our membership.
Laughable when 98% of voting doctors are thinking the same thing.
And >7,000 more doctors voted now than in Feb
Consultants have had the worst real terms pay cuts amongst the public sector. The pension tax fix is only half the issue as the pay that makes it up is diminishing.
Vote yes, and spread the word.
Stand up for yourselves and help safeguard the next generation of consultants
Consultant in England- have YOU voted AND returned your ballot?
We are *still* in a period of *very* high inflation, and PAY (& therefore PENSION) continues to FREE FALL in real terms.
Its NEEDS fixing to keep doctors (all grades) in UK & get waiting lists down
Pls Vote & RT
Especially when the cost to reverse our pay cuts immediately (which isn’t a demand)
Would cost less than half of what the government has already wasted on strikes because they have refused to
-initially engage at all
-work collaboratively
-put forward a credible offer

1/ VITAL🧵 So people have had a couple of days to digest the DDRBs "independent" reports & their imposition by governemnt.
TLDR;they represent further MASSIVE pay cuts.
Lets start with some history and look at what happened BEFORE the current high inflation
Pls read all/RT
U.K. trained doctors, are leaving at rates far greater than any other comparable country.
We are losing doctors because the UK government doesn’t value them and we live in a global market where doctors are valued far greater in other countries
As
@talthegooner
says, latest Govt move from
@RishiSunak
is not an offer, it’s an imposition
Of further real terms pay cuts
It will not show doctors they are valued and importantly will not stem the flow to other countries that do value doctors appropriately
@BMA_JuniorDocs
Dr Tal Ellenbogen of the BMA Junior Doctor's Committee says it is 'regrettable' strikes have taken place, but argues the proposed pay increase of £14 to £20 per hour would receive a 'resounding yes' by most, despite the govt rejecting it.
📺 Sky 501
As always, these strikes can be cancelled if the Government can bring us a credible offer that we can take to our members
There is no law which stops them from talking to us now. It is a decision wholly of their own making
For
@BMA_JuniorDocs
Today is the last safe day to post your ballot
Every kitchen counter ballot is a NO vote
Don’t be that person
If your ballot’s in your bag at work, get it, vote YES/YES, find your nearest postbox (likely in hospital), post back
We even suggested delaying this action, with the aim to resolve this year’s dispute,
If the government agreed to extend our mandate for a short time to allow space for progress.
If we’d have reached a deal, then the ‘delayed’ strikes wouldn’t be called for at all
Gov said no
Ignoring the actual cash value doctors are paid for a minute, we hear the argument ‘everyone’s pay is down’
Yes- nobody should have their pay cut
But we are not in the same boat
Doctors have lost far more pay compared to almost all
Pay eroded 10x more than the average worker
Not only are
@NHSProviders
against MSL
Even they recognise the Government
1) doesn’t care about patients’ poor outcomes on non strike days
2) just want to stop doctors from striking
When in fact we’re striking for pay/ morale/ retention to improve those same poor outcomes
@thegradmedic
@RobLaurensonD4P
It’s been a huge team effort to get where we are.
Not least from the membership.
It’s doctors on the ground getting agitated, re-invigorated, and ultimately engaging again with the BMA that gives us strength.
Together, we can achieve FPR and so much more. ✊🏾✊🏾
The average 3% put to our committee would have not only worsened that pay erosion for many doctors
But simply does not go far enough to reverse the trend
As always, if the government can provide a credible offer before our strikes, they can be cancelled
Ultimately doctors have faced extreme pay cuts, to the tune of 26%,
*that no other workforce has*
All doctors want, is for pay cuts to be reversed, so doctors are valued the same as they were in 2008 (when the pay cuts started)
This means being paid £20ph instead of £15ph
2nd round of
@BMA_Consultants
strike.
Fighting for themselves & the future of our profession.
Their pay cut by >35% and
@RishiSunak
still ideological, refusing to even meet & talk.
Show support at a picket and don’t take on work you’re not trained to do
We are not asking for this to be done in one go
But even if it was, it would cost far less than the £3bn the govt has wasted on strike action so far
Strike action that could have been avoided if the govt didn’t ignore us for months and years at a time
Failure to resolve the strikes is expected to cost the NHS £3bn. Trust leaders are deeply frustrated and anxious that there is no news of any official pay negotiations. It's vital the government and the BMA resume talks urgently.
One of the more disappointing aspects is there does seem to be a willingness from some to move forward, but seemingly the roadblocks are coming straight from the top
The government's bank of goodwill has run dry. It's time we stand up for ourselves. It's time we fight for what we deserve. It's time we get ready to strike

The Govt have a choice:
-pay doctors fairly,
Which starts with a reversal of pay cuts ensured since 2008
-Or accept that continuing as they are with further pay erosion and devaluation will only drive doctors away and further the indignation in those who stay
Spending on healthcare is a political choice.
The UK govt can either appropriately resource the NHS including wages for staff
Or be honest about
-poorer standards of care
-longer waiting lists
-delays in treatment
-avoidable death
That comes from continued underfunding
Harm is already occurring due to a workforce crisis. If we don’t take action, and start to value doctors and other HCPs, these trajectories will only get worse.
Junior doctors voting to strike from 9th Jan should be empowered to VOTE YES

means the public still pay… £0 for
-their hip replacement
-clinic visit
-GP visit
-treatment for pneumonia
Etc
And even the most senior end of ‘junior’ doctors. Worked 10 FTE years. Currently paid £28ph.
Even with the suggested DDRB uplift
Which other highly skilled professional with 10 years experience, huge responsibility, incredibly stressful job would stick around to be paid £30ph?
These are doctors who are literally doing brain and heart surgery
Treating complex patients in clinics
Stabilising critically unwell patients in the emergency department and intensive care
Having difficult conversations with families when loved ones deteriorate

When his government told us point blank
‘there’s no point speaking (to discuss concerns over pay, it’s impact on morale and retention) until we have a strike ballot’
Was that “the right thing”
Effectively kicking the can down the road, waiting until they ‘need’ to do something
And we have just heard reports that
@RishiSunak
would rather forego £7 billion to help a small amount of people whose estates are >£325,000 to pay less inheritance tax rather than pay doctors the same, in real terms, as they were in 2008
Let’s look at what
@RishiSunak
is now saying is his final offer.
Doctors in their 1st year would be paid £15.53ph
He’s asking us to do “the right thing” and accept
Where was he telling his Secretary
@SteveBarclay
to do the “right thing” when he completely ignored us last year
“But they’re just junior doctors, they’re not qualified”
Doctors in their first year of working review patients, diagnose conditions, request investigations, initiate treatment & more.
At night they can be covering hundreds of patients
“Private sector company increasing wages goes directly into the cost of making that product or service and may well end up increases prices in the shop. That’s not the same with public sector workers. There’s no price that goes up.”
-Bloomberg
The government argument that higher public sector pay will bump up inflation was debunked by leading economist
@MyStephanomics
on
@bbclaurak
this morning.
She says: ‘That’s not something economists tend to agree with’
This is obviously a heated issue but one that needs to be tackled appropriately, constructively, and informedly.
That can’t be done without us
That’s why we’ll strive to make sure ALL relevant stakeholders will be present in any forum we aim to set up
We’re hearing a lot of poorly thought out arguments against
#FullPayRestoration
that just don’t stand up to
1) truth
2) common sense
3) a future where we’re able to value and retain doctors
Inflation soared whilst public sector pay has stagnated
The public sector make up <20% of UK workforce
Private sector pay has kept up with inflation, and in some areas, exceeded
Public sector pay doesn’t affect inflation the way private sector does
But hear it from experts
A common argument, is that pay restoration for doctors will further inflation.
Complete nonsense.
This govt and BoE has failed to tackle inflation because it is out of their control. Supply chain issues from Brexit, pandemic, Ukraine has been fuelling this.
Doctors graduating after 5-6 years of medical school are paid £14.09ph
In negotiations, govt refused to offer more than 5%. Not only another real terms pay cut this year (inflation >10%), but in cash terms it amounts to £14.79ph
Simply not enough
The U.K. government claims that pay restoration, reversing cuts they have imposed is unrealistic and unaffordable.
It would cost ~£1.6bn, far less than what they have spent on dodgy contracts during the pandemic, far less than what they were prepared to pay to bail out banks
Sometimes having to uproot yourself every ~6-12 months, sometimes moving half way across the country, sometimes having to traipse back again, sometimes not even knowing where you'll be the next 6 months after. For an overall stretch of period which can span >10 years

3) let the LNC know you have done this so we can negotiate trust-wide increases

Having worked with Harry I know he’d be a fantastic advocate for anaesthetic doctors.
Willing to stand up for other doctors and rock the boat if necessary.
I’ll be voting for Harry and encourage all other anaesthetists to do so too
Don’t often post on here, but I’m standing for one of the Anaesthetist in Training places on the RCoA Council.
Anaesthesia is a wonderful specialty, but there are some fundamentals which need addressing and require somebody who’s going go get down to brass tacks to do it.
Two of my bezzie mates posted back their ballot today.
@BMA_JuniorDocs
it’s not too late if you get your ballot into a postbox by tomorrow!
Do you want FPR? Do you want better for the profession? Do you you want change?

When people say there's no money for
#PayRestoration
.. There's more than enough money. Excuses about an upward spiral is baffling. Private sector make up ~80% UK workforce and pay grew ~8% from Feb to April 2022 already. Why should 20% public sector workforce suffer?!
But for
@thetimes
article to be proved inaccurate BY THEMSELVES is poor show. Fix up
Doctors have lost more pay than almost every other workforce in the U.K (consultants/GPs have had it worse).
All we want is to reverse our pay cuts. Neutral to ‘08. Net zero
Today's article in
@TheTimes
makes the false claim that pay loss is "a national phenomenon". In fact, doctors have been hit harder than any other group. Source -
