Unfortunately, this piece I reported years ago for
@npr
(longer version on
@NPRCodeSwitch
) is “evergreen” as we say in journalism. It’s about the use of dehumanizing language:
I am trying something new and I’m SCARED. (but excited!!!) All of this is happening while I’m packing to be with my father who is in the hospital, we’ve been told he doesn’t have long to live.
Joy and Pain
…trying to hold onto both things.
Fam: Coming at you this morning with some truly bittersweet news.
We are both thrilled and quite honestly, devastated, to announce that Shereen Marisol Meraji (
@RadioMirage
) will be leaving Code Switch in August for a couple of amazing new opportunities. (1/7)
This is my last week in Cambridge/Boston.
Damn, that was hella quick!
I’m moving back to the bay and becoming a professor of journalism at UC Berkeley. What a dream come true!
Excited/Nervous/excited/nervous…
One of the things I loved most about
@NPRCodeSwitch
was that it was a multi-racial and multi-generational team of journalists. Whenever we thought something was new or surprising- Karen would remind us that it had been done before. Her voice and perspective made the show better
It was a good run—21years—but it’s just about done. Tough economic realities meant NPR had to let go of some 100 employees. I was among that number. I am sad that I won’t be working with some of the fabulous people who make NPR. But I am grateful to have work that meant so much.
My last story as the co-host/senior producer is a 9-11 story that I'm pretty sure you'll only hear on
@NPRCodeSwitch
I'll leave it there. I'd be honored if you listened:
"NPR must build a reporter/correspondent corps that reflects the diversity of the nation we cover." -- just one of the demands in a long list that is long overdue.
My beloved abuelo died last night so this is bittersweet. He played a huge role in making me who I am...
a reminder to shout out the people past and present who made
@NPRCodeSwitch
what it is, too. You know who you are.
Thank you for all you Do/Did to get us here. ❤️
We are excited to announce our first-ever Show of the Year -
@NPRCodeSwitch
. 🎉 In a year dominated by conversations about race, this show provided powerful insights, with personal perspectives from hosts
@RadioMirage
and
@GeeDee215
, and their guests.
I had my first day of a Spanish for Heritage Learners class. This is going to be a humbling experience. I'm 20 years older than everyone else and all the shame and embarrassment over my lack of proficiency has rendered me SPEECHLESS. (If you know me, you know that's rare.)
I hope people use this as an opportunity to listen to our
@nprcodeswitch
back catalog. We have been telling stories from within various communities of color: the ways we are connected and the tensions that exist amongst us, too. A consistent conversation over the past four years!
Reading for pleasure again.
Writing for pleasure again.
Im starting to heal from the pressure and intensity of the newsroom and feeling so much calmer and happier.
I want to hold onto this…
Many people in my life have sent me a link to this piece and the one thing I want to point out from it is the SMALL percentage of LATINO/A/X employees who work at the org. What are we now? 18.5% of the US pop?
But only 7% of NPR?
NOT a good look.
My Spanish language learning journey has been an emotional roller coaster. To cope, I made an episode that I wish I could have listened to before I started it. This is for all of you who want to get better at your heritage language(s).
I hope it helps!
Going full circle (and coast to coast) from the Harvard of the West:
@SFSU
(Raza Studies, Class of a long-ass time ago)
to ...
@Harvard
(Nieman fellow, Class of 2022)
We’re pleased to introduce the 2022 Nieman Fellows, accomplished journalists from around the world who'll join us at
@Harvard
this fall. The group includes investigative reporters, editors, podcasters, data specialists and visual storytellers. Welcome all!
I have a chronic disease: endometriosis. I've had to have surgeries, I've been on and off hormones to suppress my periods - it has caused me so much pain and infertility which I've been battling for years and YEARS.
"These conversations are more important than ever."
@NPRCodeSwitch
co-host Shereen Marisol Meraji (
@radiomirage
) shares what the show means to her. Check out the podcast and see why it's our show of the year:
I’m back on
@NPRCodeSwitch
this week introducing two incredible stories from two recent graduates from
@ucbsoj
(my new home!)
And they’re on my favorite topic: LANGUAGE.
Please listen! The episode drops Wednesday, August 3!
We've been making the
@NPRCodeSwitch
podcast for four years. This week marks our fourth birthday. And, we are here, once again, with an episode about the police killing black people.
We have something to say about that:
Today is my first official day at
@ucbsoj
I’m working on my syllabus!
Those of you who are veterans at this professoring thing, holler here with any syllabus tips you’d like to share!
Thank you in advance-
Professor Meraji (so weird!!!!)
2 mos ago I didn’t know how to make any accent marks in a Word document. I spent a lot of time googling “how do you make a tilde” and then messing up ALOT.
Now when I’m doing my Spanish homework I can do them without looking down at the keyboard.
Winning
I got my Spanish test back today. 92.5% So, not AT ALL as bad as I thought. In fact, good. But - like everyone here said, tests aren't great predictors of what you know. And, I still have A LOT TO LEARN. But, I'm going to celebrate this little win.
With every single story, I reach a point where I’m like - wait - WHAT THE F WAS I THINKING?????????? I’M TOTALLY IN OVER MY HEAD!!!!!!!
It almost always passes.
But I’m in the thick of that anxiety at this very moment.
And it sucks.
I have been doing a lot of thinking about the world and who I was in it - 20 years ago. It will be my last piece as the co-host of the
@NPRCodeSwitch
podcast.
The US bombing of Afghanistan in 2001 plays a role in the story. I started writing it long before the recent news.
I stopped making pictures with my camera because it started to feel like work. I hope this trip changes that. Enjoy one of the incredible views from the El Yunque rainforest:
Big thanks for your thoughts, good vibes, prayers. He’s rallying. This has been such an emotional roller coaster and the ride is not over but I’m so grateful for the support.
EDITORS assigning your reporters...stop and think about this!!! I've been that reporter who has had to do day-after big protest stories and what got cut for time? Not the stuff about what was burned and broken but WHY it was burned and broken! I'm still mad 6 years later.
I LOVED this thread!
40 plus years of over-the-top Puerto Rican Christmases and my Iranian Muslim dad is still an awkward and reluctant participant.
He’s going to get a kick out of this!
Growing up, my Muslim family never celebrated Christmas. This year I am not going home, because pandemic, so my roommates are teaching me how to have my first proper Christmas.
I am approaching this with anthropological precision.
Here are a few observations.
I’m trying to stay present and not freak out about yet another huge move and life transition. DEEP BREATHS. This is what makes life interesting: trying new things, experimenting, learning. Breathe in. Breathe out.
Back when I directed NPR news shows, I played a lot of breakbeats between stories and I just found this handwritten postcard from an irate NPR listener while I was packing up my house. Memories…
So...my partner, mi amor, mi corazón...was not satisfied being an affiliate of my Nieman fellowship. No. He went and got his own damn fellowship. And, supposedly, it comes with an office. Always trying to ONE UP ME
@NicoEspiritu9
I am excited to announce that I will be spending the next year as a fellow at Harvard's
@Kennedy_School
@CarrCenter
! I can't wait to start collaborating with all the other amazing fellows and faculty.
The elitism in the intern selection process is REAL. I went to a Cal State school and based on the stats, I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten an internship at NPR. If
@nextgenradio
hadn't found me, I wouldn't have landed a temp production gig many moons ago.
Yes, ABC cancelling
#Roseanne
after her racist tweet is big news. But, let's not forget about the
#PuertoRico
news that also came out today. A Harvard study is showing that the Puerto Rico death toll post Hurricane Maria is more than twice that of Katrina.
Props to my classmate who told me that the hardest part of taking Spanish for heritage speakers is putting our egos aside and admitting we kinda suck at this but if we put in the work we *hopefully* won't suck forever.
I got my booster (and flu shot) yesterday and was not expecting to feel this achy and exhausted.
I should have taken the advice and cleared my schedule.
Instead, It’s packed with deadlines.
CLEAR YOUR SCHEDULE WHEN YOU GET BOOSTED!
I'm so PUMPED about the story I'm working for
@NPRCodeSwitch
about the 30+year movement in Hawai'i lead by Hawaiians to revitalize their language. Everyone trying to learn your ancestral language as a second language because you didn't grow up with it - is sure to be INSPIRED!
I have gone from not interacting with very many people IRL, for a-year-and-change, to a lot of IRL human interaction and I need to build up my endurance. I think I tend towards being an introvert and need long stretches of time without socializing.
It’s nice that a 31/2 year old podcast can still make a best-of list!!! Congratulations
@NPRCodeSwitch
team!
We are excited about what’s on deck for 2020. Learning and growing! Learning and growing!
Nobody in my family was thrilled when I told them I was majoring in Raza Studies now called Latino/a Studies.
But, look at me now, mom!
Big thanks to the student activists and organizers who risked so much (and did jail time!) to make that possible.
🌟NEW EP ALERT🌟
The largest public university system in the country just announced a new requirement: Students must take an ethnic studies or social justice course. But ethnic studies might not exist if not for students who took a stand 50 years ago.
I was helping put the finishing touches on tomorrow's
@NPRCodeSwitch
episode while also trying to pay attention to that dumpster fire of a debate. I guarantee our episode is A MILLION TIMES BETTER than what we all just witnessed.
.
@GeeDee215
and I (and me?) just finished an epic tracking session and I'm going to miss how we are able to finish one another's sentences and raps and 90s r&b songs... it's a special thing we've got going.
I live in LA, my neighbor just walked out of the house crying. No matter how you feel about Kobe Bryant, so much of LA, California, the country and basketball fans around the world will be mourning his loss. Especially right here in Los Angeles.
JUST IN: Kobe Bryant has died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, Calif., according to a tweet from the City of Calabasas.
Bryant, who played for the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years, was 41. Authorities say four other people died in the crash.
DOPE listen this week with our special guest
@THEKIDMERO
— talking about raising his kids Dominican, making moves from the Bronx to NJ, and how language may be what makes Latines, Latine (oh yeah and we discuss that too!:LATINE)
(The Brand is Strong)
How many times have I heard "we couldn't find any qualified producers of color..." (SO MANY TIMES)
WELL, YOU CAN'T USE THAT AS AN EXCUSE ANYMORE!!!
The
@POCinAudio
directory is live! With almost 500 audio makers worldwide and counting. Check it out:
Our month in Puerto Rico is winding down and I’m already trying to figure out when we can return.
Being here has been good for my soul.
I’m so proud to be from this extraordinarily beautiful place full of open, generous people who are teaching me how to embrace LIFE!
Asian Americans are being treated with disdain and disrespect. Businesses in Chinatowns across the country are reporting declines in sales. We talk about why certain people get labeled as diseased and what that has to do with an American tradition.
🚨NEW EP ALERT🚨
The global response to coronavirus has made clear that the fear of contracting disease has an unfortunate companion: xenophobia.
And that link between xenophobia and disease has a long history in the U.S.
My audio students won 'Best Documentary' for a radio show/podcast episode they made in their first semester of journalism school! It's called Ohlone Land and it examined Bay Area municipalities' and institutions' attempts to repair harm done to local indigenous communities.
JUST IN | After 131 years, PepsiCo is retiring the controversial brand name and mascot, Aunt Jemima, acknowledging that the brand is based on a racial stereotype.
My Iranian dad always said I should have been a lawyer because my favorite past-time is arguing with him!
I can’t wait to show him this!
Thanks again, for the honor,
@IABA_NorCal
THE CENSUS: It is NOT BORING. IT IS POWERFUL. It informs what we call ourselves, how we're represented, how 880 BILLION federal dollars get spent each year.
PEOPLE IN POWER KNOW THIS.
@NPRCodeSwitch
wants you to know this too:
Are you ready for a story of intrigue, scandal, secrets, and heartache?
This week on the pod, we have it all!
@hansilowang
has been following all the ins and outs of the U.S. Census Bureau, and he has the receipts 🧾🤑💳

I’m spending so much time in virtual meetings that I’m feeling really zapped of creative inspiration. I am trying to push through but I’m also very open to suggestions on ways to snap out of the malaise. (I canceled nearly all of today’s meetings, step one)
Good thing people have short attention spans so lazy opEds written by people who have been in positions of editorial power for a quarter of a century blame people who haven’t had that kind of editorial power for what’s wrong (while pretending they’re pointing the finger at
New
@NPRCodeSwitch
episode dropping first thing Wednesday and I'm working hard on two future episodes, too.
I haven't had a lot of time for twitter but, trust me, we have good information and stories coming your way!
Big thanks to everyone who has been sharing our work!
I can’t keep doing this not sleeping thing — it’s exacerbating my anxiety which is fueling more insomnia so I’m over caffeinating to cope and the cycle continues.
I know I have the power to break the cycle but my excuse is always:
I’m too tired
#winteriscoming
It is the beginning of October and I’ve already busted out my LA winter clothes, here in Cambridge.
I have no idea what I’m going to do come February.
Peace be with all of you who are cursing and hurling insults just because people want to use inclusive language.
Why is the use of the letter X (for example) so threatening?
Our virtual live show is today. And I’m very nervous!!!!!!!!! I’m on the cusp of an “ataque de nervios!!!!” as Iris Ivelis Portela (my grandma) loves to say.
Now that I’m not working constantly, I’m catching up on things I’ve missed.
I watched all of Reservation Dogs last night and will probably watch it again, I liked it so much.
Better late than never.
It's memorial day and I'm sitting here at work trying to write an upcoming episode. I just made the mistake of reading a negative tweet that came into the CS account. Please know - we are trying our best and we know there's always room for improvement. But, don't be mean.
A college course used the
@NPRCodeSwitch
pod as the “textbook” — we visited the students on the last day of instruction and recorded it for this week’s episode. It’s full of youth and energy and ❤️
This week, we're going to college 👨🏿🎓👩🏽🎓🎒📘
We visited
@MartinaPMcGhee
's Race & Identity class at
@UTSA
, where the textbook is....Code Switch!
Join us to find out what happens when theoretical convos about race stop being polite and start getting real
I’m reading through some of the messages that
@NPRCodeSwitch
listeners and my colleagues have written about me and I’m so overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude.
@NPRCodeSwitch
@RadioMirage
She gave me the language to understand my own experiences of not fitting in enough anywhere, and then she gave me a space to be. To breathe. To feel enough.
🇵🇸🇮🇶🇹🇷 💛🇮🇷🇵🇷
So much of my job involves learning really important history I was never taught --- but should have been.
This week's
@NPRCodeSwitch
episode is another example of that happening:
🏀🌟NEW EP ALERT🌟🏀
Last week, athletes all over the country went on strike to protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake.
So today, we're telling a story of 6 Black women who brought their city to a standstill in 1881 when they refused to work
And, it's not the understanding...that part I feel pretty comfortable with. It's SPEAKING BACK IN SPANISH. I've gotten so comfortable responding in English. And, breaking that habit is not going to be easy. HUMBLING AF
Change is scary. Change is challenging. Change is work. Change is exhausting.
Right now I want to say “keep the change,” change into my pajamas and take a LONG nap.
Officially back to
@NPRCodeSwitch
from a little summer break!
It feels like the first day of school and I’m thinking too hard about what I’m going to wear. (It’s radio and most of my team can’t see me because they’re on the other coast)
I’m weirdly nervous.
This is the energy I’m going for -
STARTING NOW.
July 6, 2020:
‘This is what I need. Are you good enough to give it to me?’ Not ‘Am I good enough to deserve the kind of treatment that I want?’ ”
I'm going to take some time off to be off-line and in nature with my family for my birthday week.
Thank you all for listening to Code Switch and engaging with the stories we make and shows we do!
I'm so grateful and so lucky!!! Peace.
