Nobody in my family was thrilled when I told them I was majoring in Raza Studies now called Latino/a Studies.
But, look at me now, mom!
Big thanks to the student activists and organizers who risked so much (and did jail time!) to make that possible.
πNEW EP ALERTπ
The largest public university system in the country just announced a new requirement: Students must take an ethnic studies or social justice course. But ethnic studies might not exist if not for students who took a stand 50 years ago.

About time, no? At the same time, all of us in Big Media must stop using the word "minority" - The word keeps us down and out, as "others." And, anyway, in many communities, we're now the collective majority.
@RadioMirage
That's awesome - so glad you stayed the course!
Proud CSU took this important step. And also concerned about the "OR social justice" aspect of the requirement.
Would love to hear your and
@GeeDee215
's thoughts on the controversy underway and what is lost (or gained?).
@RadioMirage
This is such great news. I wouldnβt be the person I am today without the social justice courses I took at Villanova University. It was the best way for me to learn about minority perspectives in a school that is a supermajority white. It should be required there too!
@RadioMirage
Word! I heard this podcast this morning, and I loved it. Somehow, I never learned about this protest until today, and I'm 52 years old. :-)

Most people from Latin America outside USA are not identified with the term "Latino". Latino in Spanish is not an adjective, not a noun. Why not "Latin American...."? "Raza" is even worse though.
