Hundreds of thousands of DC residents had to endure a coup in their backyard today, go into curfew at 6pm, and fear for their personal safety. None of them have any representation in Congress.
Donald Trump just shared a video of a supporter yelling “White Power” and I can’t help but be angry all over again at all the editors who kept their reporters of color from using the word “racist” for the last several years.
Sending nothing but love to Nia Long.
We’re not letting a man, who didn’t recognize the luxury her presence was, dim all her beauty and glory.
Matter of fact, we need a Nia Long national holiday!
I hope this email never finds you.
I hope you are hidden.
Hidden in rest and relaxation.
I hope your Outlook crashes and that you just spend the rest of the day outside.
I hope you don’t think about emails while you’re there.
I hope you are free.
Serena was asked about whether she should stop fighting for equality and focus on tennis
Her response: “The day I stop fighting for equality and for people that look like you and me will be the day I’m in my grave.”
There’s a lot I can’t say right now and a lot that I’ll probably never say but know this: when a person of color working in audio/radio/podcasting is telling you how they’ve been hurt by the industry, believe them. Always believe them. We are not making this shit up.
The true appeal of Wordle is that it’s not too difficult. Most players win more than they lose. It’s a small daily win that is predictable and rarely overwhelming. What we all need more of these days are things that *aren’t too difficult*
*THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MY TED TALK*
Don’t say “suburban voters” when you mean “white suburban voters.”
Don’t say evangelical voters when you mean “white evangelical voters.”
Don’t say “working class voters” when you mean “white working class voters.”
It’s best when journalists deal in specifics, not avoidance
1/ If your story abt "low black voter turnout" in states like Alabama doesn't include a discussion of laws that typically diminish black turnout in states like Alabama, it is incomplete, and most likely deceptive.
1/ I've been thinking about this a lot the last few weeks, and I can't let it go. Dear everyone: Stop letting your bosses tell you the company is really "like a family." It's not, and that kind of talk is often used to manipulate employees, especially younger employees.
The President of the United States telling minority AMERICAN Congresswomen to go back to the countries they came from? This is a new, terrible, racist, sad low, even for Trump.
When groups of people who have experienced racism for centuries say, “Hey, that’s racist!” you could just believe them. Take them at their word. Trust their lived experience. That is a thing you could do.
I have a problem with journalists who feel like their job is to publicly mourn a dead politician as if they’re family. It’s not. Stop being so damn sappy. We’re journalists, not paid funeral criers. We should ALWAYS hold politicians at a healthy remove, even in their deaths.
Some personal news: Abt a month and a half ago — in the midst of social distancing & pandemic life and WFH forever — I put my stuff in storage and went home to San Antonio. I’m closer to my momma and my brother and my nephew now. And I’ll be here as long as it feels right.
Watching Kamala Harris drop out of the presidential race to avoid going into debt the same month Michael Bloomberg shoved his way into the competition with his billions means we should probably have a conversation about money in politics. But we probably won’t.
Good morning! Don’t forget that the oldest Millennials are 38 at this point, so that snarky think piece you just wrote/read/shared is probably all wrong and just full of someone who hates the attributes of youth that have been a constant kind of since forever.
Piece idea: what’s it like to walk around as a person of color, a Jew, or a member of the LGBTQ community in a political climate in which hate crimes against these groups have increased, in some cases astronomically. I’d do it but... oh, wait
I really just want to quit everything and create a six-part investigative podcast about the actual, secret lives of the people who run social media for all the fast food places.
North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!
Imagine a scenario in which the first-in-the-nation presidential caucus happened in a place that was as black or brown as Iowa is white. What do you think would happen?
Flight agent getting people on this plane has been boarding every group most beautifully:
“Now boarding group B, as in Bantu knots.
Now boarding group C, as in cornrows.”
Group D, as in dreadlocks.”
I am trying to find out everything I can about this man. Will report back.
Tell me your Weirdest eating/drinking habit you had as a kid!

I’ll go first: When I was like 8 years old, I used to carry a little bottle of apple cider vinegar around wherever I went, taking a swig every now and then like a lush w/his flask.
Tip. Tip everybody. Tip the guy who runs your apartment building. Tip your ride share driver. Tip the lady who delivered your food. Tip whoever cleaned your hotel room. Tip the person who changed the oil in your car. Tip your waiter. Tip the host/ess, as well. Always be tippin’!
The most stinging truth of 2020 is seeing how unprepared the majority of newsrooms across the country are to adequately cover this moment. Whether for financial lack, or editorial misdirection, or antiquated views of what a journalist should be. Our industry is Just. Not. Ready.
Wow I've never seen this before at a sentencing hearing:
Botham Jean's brother asked the judge if he can hug Amber Guyger after a jury sentenced her to 10 years in state prison for killing his brother.
He said he forgave her and they embraced as sobs rang out in the courtroom
I’ve been quiet on because my mother died a few days ago. The funeral was today in Texas.
I’m sharing her obit here if you’d like to read more about her life. I’m also using this tweet to remind you to go hug a loved one today.
The same David Brooks who appointed himself an expert on ethics and morals also left his wife and married the 20-something assistant who helped him write his book on ethics and morals. The book is called “The Road To Character,” and y’all I literally can’t.

Underground tunnels are immune to surface weather conditions (subways are a good example), so it wouldn’t matter to Hyperloop if a hurricane was raging on the surface. You wouldn’t even notice.
All these candidates talking about what they’d do for Black people but what I really want to ask is if they’d ever send their children to a majority black public school if they were zoned for one.
