Whenever this topic comes up, it becomes clear that many Americans don't understand how their country has achieved internal free trade. It's not because everyone intrinsically enjoys the right to trade, it's because the courts strike down protectionist state statutes.

Canadians love to shit on Americans but their country has been captured by special interest groups that made internal free trade illegal and are costing Canadians $100 billion per year as a result that’s $2500 per citizen per year

Leftists from other parts of the world often assume Layton's 2011 run was Canada's "socialist moment" (akin to the 2016 Bernie and 2017 Corbyn campaigns). But it didn't have a strong ideological edge. I would liken Layton's policy affect (after he went federal) to Walz.

@Dylon_R_Martin The 2011 platform is kinda funny on how milquetoast and small it is, compared to how much Layton 2011 gets praised. I've seen socialists praising Layton as a revolutionary leftist and Singh as a Blairite and it's just so silly

I think the most distinctive aspect of Canadian English is the "I'm done my homework" construction (apparently also found in Philadelphia). Most non-Canadians regard this phrasing as completely ungrammatical, but in spoken Canadian English it's not just acceptable but preferred.

I say this all the time but it's wild to me how much Twitter users hate our logo. We've been using it for decades and, although the downgrading of the coat of arms was initially unpopular in conservative circles, I don't know that anyone's really suggested it be changed.

@Cadeyrnn Boebert's husband exposed himself to the mule team that was hauling the ballots. At which point they decided suicide was preferable to continued existence.

The "neoliberal" movement's aspiration to bring views/evidence from the economics field into the political mainstream sometimes results in weird faultlines. In this case, American economists are far more supportive of "low-wage" immigration than their counterparts in Canada.

The zenith of progressivism in Canadian federal politics was the 2019 NDP campaign, which didn't exactly provoke a youthquake

@vanillaopinions Spare us the sanctimony of "I'm coming out of retirement" or "interrupting my much-needed vacation from this hellsite" yadda yadda yadda. You are taking time out of your day to dunk on a grad student with an anime pfp. Don't pretend you have a life.

Using the 2021 Census income data for federal ridings, I tried to map the impact of taxes and transfers on income inequality. This map shows the ratio between the after-tax Gini coefficient and the Gini index for market income. Red means a small difference, blue means a big one.

@Blake_Allen13 Not sure why so many people say this when the Canadian Liberals have been in power federally for the large majority of the country's history. You're right about Europe, though.
