Here's my behind-the-scenes look at why two of Judge Aileen Cannon's clerks quit since the Trump criminal case arrived in chambers.
It answers a lot of the questions that went unanswered in yesterday's post.

Achievement unlocked: no longer on oxygen! We tapered it down gradually after I was extubated last week, and last night while I was asleep they cut it off entirely.

As someone who recently spent almost a week hooked up to a ventilator (and probably wouldn't be alive today without one), I can attest to the importance of ventilators and the need for an adequate supply.

As the coronavirus ravages the U.S. health care system, the scarcity of ventilators has been forcing doctors to make life-or-death decisions about who gets to breathe and who does not. Our investigation helps explain the acute shortage of medical devices.
After a second night not requiring supplemental oxygen during which my blood oxygen level didn’t dip below 90. Optimistic about getting discharged soon. Thanks again to everyone for your prayers and support.
Thanks to all the media outlets who have reached out with interview requests - I’m normally delighted to speak with journalists, but right now I’m trying to let my vocal cords heal after 6 days on a ventilator.

I was in good shape before I came down with
#COVID19
-- and I suspect I might have contracted the
#coronavirus
at the gym, to which I was going multiple times a week.
FL Gov Ron DeSantis says he won’t close the state’s gyms because “If you are good shape you have a very, very low likelihood of ending up in significant condition as a result of the
#coronavirus
.”
As I recover from
#COVID19
, I've been slowly increasing my exercise.
Today I went for a two-mile jog/walk, followed by a short swim. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it went; I took many breaks, but I never wound up wheezing.
FYI - I have a confirmed case of
#covid19
aka
#coronavirus
. If you interacted with me in person after 2/23, you can cite that fact and get automatically tested. Otherwise you might have to go to the ridiculous efforts I had to in order
1/ It has been exactly 9 months since I started having
#COVID19
symptoms, which eventually worsened to the point where I wound up in the hospital, then on a ventilator.
Many folks ask: how am I doing now? Here's an update (thread).

My blood oxygen has remained in the 90s throughout the taper and even after the shutoff - so discharge before the end of this week looks like a very realistic possibility, per my nurse this morning.

But for those who get severe cases, like me, it’s been hell. I’ve had 10 days & counting, with no real improvement, of fever, fatigue, joint aches, chills, cough, respiratory difficulty. I have never been this sick in my entire life.

A bit about me: I’m a generally healthy, 44-year-old male, 153 lbs. (surely less now), 5’7”, no drugs , rarely drink, no health conditions other than exercise-induced asthma, which I manage with an inhaler.

Please keep Judge Esther Salas and her family in your thoughts and prayers. I was a federal prosecutor in Newark when she was a federal public defender, and she was a highly respected and beloved member of the bar before taking the bench.
A gunman shot the son of a federal judge at her home in New Jersey on Sunday, according to an official with knowledge of the situation. Her son died in the shooting and her husband was injured, another judge told The Associated Press.
This morning, this ex-marathoner could barely walk the five feet from the bed to the toilet - and I had to pee as quickly as possible, chest heaving with the labor of breathing, because I was going to collapse if I stood too long.

I’m usually a fast eater (bad habit, I know). Today it took my 90 minutes to eat my lunch - because I kept getting winded. Who DOES that? I’m so weak, the fork wobbled each time I lifted it to my mouth.

It shouldn’t have taken two separate ER visits, both times with severe respiratory symptoms, to get a
#COVID19
test. But that was my experience - and even though the situation is improving, it’s still sadly the case for so many others.
#LatsCovid19Journal
I completed the NYC Marathon twice - not the greatest times, but I did - and even now that I can’t run much (knees post-40), each week I still walk 25 miles and go to at least 3 high-intensity interval training classes at the gym.

In my current state,

Steven Calabresi is a conservative, a Republican, and a co-founder of

save my life? Probably in the 1.5-2.0 range.
(a) When I came to the ER having trouble breathing from

and they put me on oxygen ASAP: 0.3 (not sure I would necessarily have died then & there).
Finally, I apologize if I inadvertently and unknowingly infected you. I self-quarantined as soon as I had clear symptoms - but people can transmit before they’re symptomatic, which is another reason for a robust testing regime.

Another factor (thanks to the folks who shared with me): viral load. You can get more or less exposure to a virus, and more exposure can cause more harm. It's not just binary, exposed/not exposed.

* Bluish lips or face

Dear
@CNN
,
If you're looking for a thoughtful and careful legal analyst with wide-ranging experience as a lawyer, 15+ years of writing about the law, respect from both sides of the aisle, diversity, and a really boring personal life, I know someone....
Dr. Nisar Quraishi, RIP. He saw patients as recently as this month at
@NYULangone
Trinity before contracting
#coronavirus
himself. He passed away on April 11 from
#COVID19
complications.
Look, I really loved going to the gym. I still miss it today.
But here's one thing I don't understand about
@GovRonDeSantis
's not closing gyms.
It's FLORIDA, where you can exercise OUTDOORS, which is much safer than the gym, YEAR-ROUND.
Today's heartwarming story:
Marilee Shapiro Asher beat Spanish flu at age 6 -- and just beat

She's also a celebrated artist with work at the

Katie Couric writes in her new memoir that she thought Justice Ginsburg, 83 at the time, was "elderly and probably didn't fully understand the question."
I dunno. Based on her writing & speaking leading up to her death, I think RBG was pretty darn with it.
Couric writes that she wanted to protect RBG and so she edited out RBG saying that those who kneel during the national anthem are showing 'contempt for a government that has made it possible for their parents and grandparents to live a decent life.'
No new records for distance or duration, just an ordinary morning run (three miles), and that’s okay. Six months ago, the best I could do without stopping was two miles, so I am (slowly) getting back to baseline. Next goal, four miles/40 minutes.
The majority of COVID-19 patients who end up on ventilators don't survive, early research shows. And many of the patients who are still alive can't be taken off the breathing machines.
6/ The ventilator damaged my vocal cords, and it took longer for my voice to return to normal -- but I think it's fairly normal now.
(But it's not quite the same -- and maybe it never will be. My husband thinks it's deeper -- maybe not a bad thing.)
Suddenly getting lots of queries about my health (from folks not familiar with my story). I’m 44, not overweight, no smoking, no drugs, hardly any drinking. No health conditions except exercise-induced asthma, which I manage with an inhaler.
Nothing is certain, plus I could still catch something else - e.g., regular flu - so we continue to wash hands constantly, wear masks on the rare occasions we do go out, and generally
#StayAtHome
.

The exercise-induced asthma didn’t stop me from competing the NY Marathon twice - slowly, but I did it - or going to HIIT classes at least three times a week. BP almost always 120/80. All bloodwork at my annual physicals in normal range.
9/ I do have greatly reduced cardiovascular endurance. My limit for jogging without stopping is about 2 miles/20 minutes, after previously being able to run for miles, and I had to build up to even this (I had to use a wheelchair when I first came home).
It's true my marathon-running days were in the distant past (I finished the NYC marathon twice) -- but I was still in good shape before
#COVID19
landed me in the hospital for almost 3 weeks, including 6 days in the ICU on a ventilator, in critical condition.
Dr. Anthony Fauci to
@JenSeniorNY
, on young people who seem (and act) indifferent to
#COVID19
:
"By getting infected themselves — even if they never get a symptom — they are part of the propagation of a pandemic."
By Monday 3/16, I couldn’t breathe again. I rushed back to the ER - and this time they were on their game. They admitted me, gave me oxygen, put me in an isolation room - and FINALLY gave me the
#coronavirus
test.
#LatsCovid19Journal
7/ I might still be considered
#LongCovid
, though, because my lungs still don't look normal on a CT scan.
At my last pulmonologist visit in September, the scan showed some lung scarring and "ground glass opacities" (haziness that shouldn't be there).
5/ But at some point in June, the cough and shortness of breath went away -- quite suddenly, actually. I'm not sure why.
Was it the maintenance inhaler I had been using since getting out of the hospital? Or just the passage of time?
