Aaaaand just like that, one year, dozens of amazing colleagues, hundreds of trauma calls and thousands of patients later… my Emergency Medicine BSc year at
@KingsCollegeNHS
Emergency Department comes to an end….
@RobynDean_
We had HEE deliver us a lecture on the PIA. A slap in the face when the lady said - “it’s JUST two years” and “people find happiness where they least expect to” 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
@drokane
I think it needs to start by supporting senior medical students to start ‘doing the job’ under close supervision. Medical students are majorly infantilised in the UK imo.
We are cracking on with delivering the doubling of medical school places.
205 additional places already confirmed for this September.
And today we allocate 350 places for 2025, awarded to medical schools up and down the country, helping to level up access to medical degrees.
Very excited to have a poster accepted for SamCopenhagen. Big shout out to the organisers for making it accessible to medical students (only charging £25 for a ticket! - don’t miss out). How academia should be done 😊.
@acutemedicine
Great to present an interesting case report I saw during my elective on
@BTHCrCU
last year, on the use of glucagon in cardiovascular drug overdose 😊

We fundamentally disagree with the decision by the UK Health bodies to move the Specialised Foundation Programme into the PIA system from 2025 and will fight for students by resisting this change in any way that we can.

Although excited to present, I am slightly disappointed that med students and foundation doctors are grouped in the same fee banding for
@RCEMevents
Glasgow Annual conference. A reminder of the
#liveableNHSbursary
campaign. FYs are paid, medical students aren’t
@RCEMpresident
😢
What is the best way to foundation doctors to gain pre-hospital experience alongside the foundation programme? Are there opportunities to work within events medicine etc? (particularly around the London area!)
@RobynDean_
Just nope. I also asked whether when you get into a deanery whether your random number is re-generated. Answer was no. Even they seemed a bit shocked when I questioned getting my last deanery if I get ranked 9000th, and then I’ll also get the shittest job in my bottom deanery 😭
Anyone know of any research papers on the role of bypassing ED (straight to theatre) in a critically unwell bleeding trauma patient? Struggling to find anything! Is there a name for this approach?
I spent 8 weeks at Withnell working with Dr Robinson & Dr Ressel. It was a fantastic experience which showcased how amazing primary care can be, with a very happy and looked after patient cohort. It would be a terrible shame for this to be lost.

A selection of recent patient feedback . We are so lucky to have such a supportive and wonderful patient group. We all want the same thing . Great care , great patient satisfaction, great continuity

I’ve just been contacted (and said yes!) to work at the Nightingale Hospital in Manchester. An eerie sense of apprehension and excitement lingers. Glad I’ll be able to do my part for the NHS.

Younger me, who was inspired into medicine by watching the doctors I have now worked with on 24 hrs in A&E at Kings more than a decade ago would be very proud😊
Easily the best training year I’ve had so far, and I leave holding immense gratitude to the phenomenal, inspirational colleagues I have worked with who have supported and shared their wealth of knowledge and experience with me❤️
@cmwilliams99
Yeah, I’ve heard of candidates who would have scored full points for academic work last year who would now non-interviewable with the changes. Appalling.

@UHSFT
Ever thought about employing senior/clinical medical students as band 2s to scribe? I’m sure loads would love to take up the opportunity in this climate!
Does anyone know of any Liver ICU consultants at Kings London who would be keen to have a keen medical student attend some ward rounds/get some exposure? 😊

@stephen_t_webb
An excellent article, highlighting exactly what juniors are experiencing. Eloquently and respectfully described. Thank you.
@jacobkmcsweeney
@aaroncumminsNHS
I second this. I applied a month ago with the promise of “fast track” through the process. I decided to stay in Lancaster to help instead of going home to my family in London. I have been unable to get any shifts.
@jim_crawfurd
I’ve done a clinical intercalation in Emergency Medicine. A great opportunity for practical skill acquisition. Also still valid for ‘points’ in speciality application.
@StanimirrS
Is there any way we can complain? Who is responsible for this decision? Medical graduates should not be treated like this weeks before applying.
@AnahitaS
@Dr_Done_
The cackling around how much she doesn’t ‘like’ home visits is also unsettling. Being welcomed by patients into their homes to provide care is a privilege to HCPs imo.
