The reason why many people think of cyclists being law breakers & drivers not, is because of what is normalised. Speeding by 5mph, accelerating through the amber/red, parking on a double yellow line, checking a phone while stopped at lights. Few people take issue with these.

Remember folks… If your progress is impeded by a cyclist, then this is unfair and cyclists should move over asap to let you past. Of your progress is impeded by other cars, then they have every right to be there and it’s only fair to wait your turn. Thems the rules.

@anon_opin No. Here’s the correct list: 1. Drink drivers 2. Phone users 3. Speeding drivers 4. Drivers driving too fast for their surroundings in residential areas. 5. Drivers who don’t understand merge in turn.

If cyclists were permitted to ride through a red light when it’s clear… more like a give way… would there be any increase in injuries and deaths? I really don’t think there would.

Just seen a video of a red light jumping driver hitting a cyclist. Horrible. Does anyone even know it happened? Of course not. But if this was a cyclist running a red light and hitting someone it’d probably be on the front of the Daily Mail.

It’s also why we cannot have the public dictate road policing. You end up with what the majority are irritated by, not what is best for road safety. It truly is a bizarre world where people are more angry with a cyclist crawling through a red than a driver speeding by 10%.

If you account for drivers like this, I’d wager a far higher percentage of drivers run red lights than cyclists… and they’re far more dangerous as well. The difference is that this is normalised and no one bats an eyelid, unlike the absolute meltdown when a cyclist does it.

@theJeremyVine What you’ll notice about the replies, Jeremy, is that they’ll all be focused on what the cyclist could have done differently. Because apparently it’s the vulnerable road user’s responsibility to behave in such a manner that enables drivers to do whatever the hell they want.
