detention centres. A challenging and complex area of policing with so much opportunity to positively influence in and out of custody; including safeguarding children and the vulnerable, supporting the wider criminal justice…
Dear
@JeremyClarkson
the nasty crash you mention resulted in fatality. As lead Detective I require investigators to secure best evidence from a highly complex scene. It takes as long as necessary. We want roads moving but I hope you understand prioritise quality investigations!
Update..... Suspect has now been arrested in relation to the below matter. The investigation remains ongoing and no further information can be shared at this time but updates will follow when able.
My brilliant neighbour Joey is a mental health nurse.
Last night her bike was stolen.
It turned up on Gumtree - but when she gave police the name and address of the thief, they said they couldn't help because her investigative work would make it entrapment.
This is NUTS.
@theJeremyVine
@theJeremyVine
I am keen we resolve this for Joey and provide an appropriate level of service. Please can you send me the relevant details including reference numbers and I’ll make sure the matter is looked into. Thank you.
In the UK during 2022, 1,711 people died and 28,031 people were seriously injured in road crashes. There is no other transport method in which society would accept this level of harm. So why is there not extensive coverage and debate about this appalling level of road harm?
If
@theJeremyVine
was a bus in a bus lane would the car have turned and who would be in the right? Do we expect the bus to give way? Well… It's exactly the same principle for a bike in a cycle lane. ‘The turning vehicle gives way’… There really should be no need to debate this.
In the last 24hrs, there has been a lot of debate re ‘speeding’. Speeding is a leading cause of fatal crashes, destroys life & leaves bereaved families with lifelong impact. I hope the debate moves onto the offence itself, the risk it posed & why speeding is utterly unacceptable.
I don’t like this headline… Public reporting road crimes will save life (increased deterrence). How often are witnesses / victims who report other crimes referred to as vigilantes?? We need a cultural shift in road danger perception - the media included.
A fit and healthy man. Now unable to complete basic life actions with unimaginable consequences for him & his family. Yet the extreme speeding driver receives a two year ban. IMO we need a shift in thinking away from driving entitlement to one prioritising safety for road users.
Only 3yr driving ban for dangerous driver who caused life long severe injuries to 34yr old nurse. Driver was:-
➖more than 3x legal drug limit
➖had been making phone call
➖was driving at over twice the speed limit
*we need longer bans & to change perceived entitlement to drive.
**New Update**
Suspect has been convicted after pleading guilty. His sentence is as follows:-
➖32 weeks custodial (includes previous suspended sentence imposed).
➖Compensastion payment of £200

Very grateful to local roads policing officers who deployed this morning to this location and enforced offences for driving on the footpath. I understand later today the local council will put new bollards in place to resolve future issues.

I’ve seen some utter drivel spouted these past few days criticising people who take the time to report road crime. Would they complain about any other crime type reported? Of course not… The fact they do so for road crime goes to the heart of the culture change needed.
Undoubtedly
@MikeyCycling
is a road danger reduction hero. By reporting road crime he helps tackle dangerous drivers and increases deterrence - preventing potential devastation. He’s on the side of safe & sensible road users. It’s where we all should be.
The story here should be one of a driver penalised for using a phone whilst driving which greatly increases the chance of a fatal crash and the devastation that follows.
@MikeyCycling
should be praised for vast public service and considerable help and support to
#RoadSafety
.
A banned, speeding driver (80mph in a 30 mph zone) who failed to stop after killing a cyclist has been sentenced to 4 yrs and 8 months in prison, and banned from driving for 5 yrs and 3 months.
**Important law change effective today**
It is already illegal to text or make a phone call when using a hand-held device while driving. It’s now also an offence to use a mobile (or other device such as a tablet) when driving for the activities listed below.
A welcome change.

…
At the core of this is ‘driving culture’ and the need to be more patient, more observant, more respectful, and to focus more on prioritising safety above journey time. That way everybody gets to enjoy and experience safe travel…
Dear oh dear Tom... Every single day in the UK, 4-5 people die in road crashes. Many result from dangerous driving. The type
@MikeyCycling
reports. It’s hard to quantify how many lives he has saved but it’s certainly time well spent.
Speed is the most prevalent contributory factor present in fatal crashes. To stop this preventable loss of life we must embrace technology. Surely only those who condone or minimise the impact of speeding would be against the use of speed limiters?
Beyond frustrating. We must move this debate on. Speed enforcement is NOT motivated by revenue. Instead it’s purpose is to save life & enforce offences against drivers who choose to break the law & endanger others. Speed is the most prevalent contributory factor in fatal crashes.
'There's no logic.'
Motorists have reacted with fury to the appearance of 20mph speed cameras catching thousands out.
But are these cameras a 'cash cow' or much-needed to keep us safe?
I hope everyone reads the incredibly moving words from the widower; which include “Why does society in general think that speeding is a low-level crime? It is not. The affect it has on generations of families, in our case four generations, is devastating, shattering and crushing”
“The justice system has let my beloved Lorraine down,” says widower after speeding driver who killed his wife given suspended sentence, asking, “Why does society in general think that speeding is a low-level crime?”
#cycling
Less than 1% of fatal crashes are caused by a cyclist. Therefore enforcement should match proportionately the causes of harm. Our primary focus is saving life, and whilst we do enforce some cycling offences, such as red light breaches, this should not be the focus or priority.
I would be in favour of this as long as every piece of footage showing a cyclist going through a red light or zebra crossing is also passed on to the police to stop their selfish life risking behaviour

@theJeremyVine
It’s exactly this sort of attitude and behaviour that has to change. Zero patience. Zero consideration of other road users. In any event; had he have overtaken zero gain & plenty of risk added. For real change ‘We’ the public have to call out friends & family who drive like this.
118mph in a 30mph limit road. His appalling actions killed one and left another seriously injured. Why is he ever lawfully able to drive again? Imagine the frustration for loved ones who know in the future they may share the road with him. Driving must be a privilege not a right.
111 UK cyclists died in crashes last year. Can those still debating this consider the devastation such loss of life has caused 111 families? The purpose of any journey is to get from A-B with everybody arriving safely. We all have a responsibility to stop preventable deaths.
If
@theJeremyVine
was a bus in a bus lane would the car have turned and who would be in the right? Do we expect the bus to give way? Well… It's exactly the same principle for a bike in a cycle lane. ‘The turning vehicle gives way’… There really should be no need to debate this.
"You were driving too close to the cyclists. You reversed back at speed in an aggressive, deliberate & intimidating manner”
With such aggressive & dangerous action. Why only a 15 month ban? Time to end driver entitlement and opt for collective safety over individual convenience.
Close to twice the speed limit in a car with a 6.6 litre V12 engine and the capability to accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.4seconds. I feel we need substantial change in the length of driving bans and a change in thinking as to why we accept such powerful vehicles on our roads.
A speeding driver, driving at almost twice the speed limit who killed a pedestrian at a crossing, has been banned from driving for 3 years and fined £25,000.
@GMB
The real safety priority is improved driving culture. Too many drivers feel an entitlement to rush past the
#cyclist
even when that means a ‘close pass’ adding unacceptable levels of risk & for only marginal time gains. More patience is needed until a safe pass is possible.
#GMB
Utterly horrendous behaviour with devastating consequences. I find the 3yr driving ban upon release deeply frustrating. Driving should not be seen as an entitlement but instead a privilege earned through safe driving standards and a track record to prove it. Change is needed!!
- Killed a 15 year old boy cycling from close pass
- Doing 50+ in 30 zone
- Didn’t stop, ditched car, called taxi to go home, went to bed
- Didn’t call 999
- Has 8 previous convictions
- Jailed for just 40 months, out in half that
The system is broken.
I continue to see criticism of enforcement of mobile phone use (distraction) whilst in stationary traffic. Below are findings covering this issue which clearly demonstrate the increased risk (which I know can be fatal). Can we now focus criticism towards the phone using driver?!
@CrimeLdn
Aware of this horrific driving. I have tasked some investigative work to see if we can identify the car involved and relevant location. Needless to say if we do we will seek the most robust action possible.

The continued unhealthy nature of replies to this reinforce the need for a substantial road danger mindset change. We need less entitlement, less 'them vs us', less victim blaming, and so much more focus on getting from A-B safely, in an environment where everybody is respected.

No. This is somebody with a history of standing up for safe travel, who reports road crimes to the police. Below is why his actions save life!
These findings show the danger of being distracted by your phone whilst in stationary traffic (there have been fatal consequences).
1) End exceptional hardship. Drivers who tot up 12 points must serve a ban in all circumstances.
2) Introduce road side justice. Enable immediate ability for bans pending trial in cases such as outrageous speeding & drink drive.
3) make speed limiters mandatory on new vehicles.
I see widespread EScooter coverage linked to some tragic incidents. Their use is being trialled and evaluated. I see very little coverage of road danger as a whole. 5 people die & 60 seriously injured every day in crashes. More coverage can help stop this preventable devastation.
Today I reviewed video from yesterday of ‘3 fail to stops’ (FTS) for 👮♂️ in

. The clip is FTS who at times drove on wrong side of the road & at speeds over 100mph. This dangerous driver was
#DrugDriving

The point lost by so many commenting on this thread is… Drivers have a responsibility to protect vulnerable road users. That way everyone gets home safely, alive.

We need an appetite for ‘life time bans’. Driving should not be an entitlement but a privilege earned through a proven standard & safety record. And lets not say ‘he will drive anyway’. We must have high standards and disqualification provides immediate opportunity to intervene.
A banned driver who killed his passenger when he crashed into a tree at 89 mph in a 30mph zone in Nottinghamshire, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail and banned from driving for 10 years
This driver had enough points to be disqualified but successfully pleaded ‘exceptional hardship’. Now the impact is utterly devastating. Decisions should put crash victims front and centre to decision making. The points system gives enough chance as it is!

Absolutely agree. Why should somebody continue to legally drive who has knowingly driven when impaired through drink or drugs? Their selfish and criminal actions cost the lives of 235 people in road crashes during 2022 (the last full year analysed). We need action and change.

113 cyclists dying in road crashes last year is far worse than “harsh and unfair” and create devastating impact.
Comments in the show such as ‘only 2 speeding offences’ and ‘he didn’t touch the cyclist’ are exactly the attitude we must change. I hope the driver finally reflects.
"I'm a cyclist and I definitely gave that cyclist sufficient room"

Are you minded to speed when driving? If so, watch this and reflect on the risk you pose to yourself and others. After a crash you won’t have the benefit on hindsight - so from now on drive safely & sensibly today and everyday.
Drunk and failing to stop after fatal collision. Convicted of
#DrinkDriving
twice before. Yet only a 3 year driving ban (3 years!!). It’s time to end the perceived ‘entitlement to drive’ by putting safety & victims above an individual who has consistently failed other road users.
A drunk hit-and-run driver who killed a pedestrian received a 200-hour community service order and a three-year driving ban.
He had two previous drink-driving convictions.
People like John who claim speed enforcement is about revenue, create a culture that excuses the criminality of speeding drivers. Speed is the primary factor in fatal crashes, and therefore enforcement is focussed on saving life.

Speed is a primary cause of fatal crashes. Technology can limit speed. I favour GPS linked speed limiters capped to the relevant speed limit. In new vehicles why delay using this tech which would save lives? Why create new vehicles which can dramatically exceed the speed limit?
In 2022; 145 people died in a crash with a drink driver and 90 died in a crash with a drug driver. 235 lives needlessly cut short and 235 doors knocked leaving families devastated. Last December, we arrested nearly 9,000 for drink or drug drive. Selfish and dangerous criminals.…
Awful to watch such appalling driving and it’s consequences. 42 separate occurrences of poor driving! Yet only a 57 month driving ban. Surely this is totally inadequate? How do we trust a driver so reckless to be safe in future? IMO we must end the perceived entitlement to drive.
Watch how a texting lorry driver crashes into a van on the A27, seriously injuring three people.
We’ve released this video to highlight the significant implications of driving while using a mobile phone, after the driver was jailed.

I think families bereaved via a road crash will ‘understandably’ be deeply upset at the length of the driving ban in this case (just 51 months). This is not an uncommon sentencing outcome and I feel reflects a need for a societal rethink about the ‘right to drive’.
A speeding hit and run driver who killed a pedestrian who was walking on a zebra crossing has been found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and given a 30 month jail sentence.
The driver was also banned from driving for 51 months.
“Your moment of stupidity in driving under the influence of alcohol has led to profound impact on Mr Shirley. No sentence I pass can undo that impact”🤔
The driver made a choice endangering others. Surely sentencing includes victim justice & deterrence protecting future victims?
Drunk driver who crashed into cyclist, breaking his neck, walks free from court
Judge imposes suspended sentence on Leah Roots, saying her decision to drive after drinking was a “moment of stupidity”
#cycling
Where are crash victims, bereaved families & road safety factored into this decision?
Every single driver knows what losing their licence means for their personal circumstances. Driving is not an entitlement. It’s time the system prioritised safety above proven unlawful drivers.
A businessman who has 12 points on his driving licence has been allowed to continue to drive.
His lawyer said it would be “impossible to conduct his business using public transport”.
Very excited by work led by
@road_ss
in which vehicle speeds can be identified through

This will enable ‘speed enforcement’ via public reporting. A game changer for

The photo contains 3,700 pairs of shoes. It’s a somber reminder that 3,700 people around the world die in road crashes every day. That's 1 fatality every 23 seconds, yet global road safety week is only every 2 years. Why wait until 2023 for next

Awful viewing. Animal cruelty is an indicator of many other vile behaviours and a tendency towards other forms of violence. The assault & anti social behaviour needs our action. Help us by letting us know who these offenders are via 101;

Horrific life long injuries for the cyclist. A prison sentence for the drink driver who failed to stop after the crash. Yet only a ‘4yr driving ban’. I really hope we end driver entitlement and pursue a robust prioritisation of road danger reduction. We deserve to travel safely.
A hit-and-run drunk driver who left a cyclist with life changing injuries, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison and banned for driving for four-years.
The cyclist’s injuries included multiple fractures of his skull, broken ribs and a punctured lung.
I think it is unfortunate to draw a comparison to road death. Road death should never be considered inevitable and can be prevented through effective collective work. Addressing a perceived ‘road death is inevitable’ culture across society is key to influencing the change needed.
Imagine doing this in a queue at the cinema or supermarket… You wouldn’t do it right?! So why do impatient drivers do so?? It’s rude, increases danger, and at best you will save just a few seconds. Essentially zero gain to look very silly, obnoxious and put others at risk.
With some relief, back to cycling.
This driver is probably a nice guy, and just needs to think a bit more about his fellow road users.
The guy behind him in the van — not so much.
