Since
@SadiqKhan
became
@MayorofLondon
we've QUADRUPLED London's cycle network to 360km.
Our network now reaches 1/4 of Londoners. It's enabled a massive growth in cycling to 1.26m journeys per day - making London a greener safer & healthier city for all.
🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲
People keep telling me that because the UK had a heatwave in 1976, climate change is overhyped.
So here’s the global heat anomaly maps from June 1976 and June 2022.
I've just spoken to one of the
@tfl
data scientists. She said the weekend cycle figures were so high she thought the system had broken. She checked. It hadn’t. They’re just up almost 300% at the high flow sites. Wow!
#StreetspaceLDN
🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲
💥Boom💥 New data: In less than 12 months
@MayorofLondon
@tfl
&
@londoncouncils
have built 100km of new cycle lanes & hundreds of km of quieter streets. The result? Last weekend we saw a 200%+ increase in cycling (300%+ in some places). Amazing!! Build it & they will come.🚲🚲🚲
The Highway Code is changing - giving priority to people walking and cycling.
V welcome and long overdue - but not a silver bullet. We’ll continue to build new cycle lanes & pedestrian crossings and work with
@metpoliceuk
to enforce the law.
The election results across London were a ringing endorsement for continuing to make our streets safer for walking & cycling. I can’t wait to get cracking and deliver the
@MayorofLondon
’s ambitious new manifesto. We’ll build back greener, cleaner and better.
Fantastic to see the new cycle lane going in on Park Lane last night - making it safer for more people to cycle and socially distance in London. Great work by
@TfL
delivering the
@MayorofLondon
’s
#StreetspaceLDN
plan.
Nearly half of London's households don't own a car. Those on low incomes are far less likely to have a car. Making the streets safer for people walking & cycling and providing good public transport is a matter of fairness and social justice.
We’ve been working with
@GoogleMaps
to improve digital navigation for London cyclists.
The new approach will better prioritise cycle routes & quieter safer roads.
The success of the
@tfl
@Google
collaboration will benefit millions of cyclists globally.
With more & more people cycling in London, we need a new approaches for bike parking. This morning, I was delighted to open the new Bike-Drop Regent St facility for 200+ bikes - secure/cc-tv/valet service. Great use for an empty shop.
London is the world’s most congested city, with drivers spending 156 hours in traffic in 2022.
Two-thirds of all car journeys in the city could be walked or cycled in less than 20min. We urgently need to shift local trips from cars to more efficient modes.
Residents in Hackney have created an evening walking trail by decorating their windows - it’s absolutely stunning and really cheers up the neighbourhood.
Amazing
@sainsburys
cargo bike trial shows that ave speed of their bikes is 4 times faster than a van. I'd switch my supermarket order if one offered a bike delivery option.
🚲London's cycling boom continues🚲
New data shows daily cycling journeys increased to 1.26 million in 2023
📈 up 6.2% since 2022
📈 up 20% since 2019
🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲
BIGGEST ANNUAL INCREASE IN CYCLING IN LONDON ON RECORD!! 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲 Now an average of 4,000,000 km are cycled every day. The highest growth is happening where we are building new infrastructure. Still much more to do, but v good news. 👍👍👍
#TfLNewData
Lowering speed limits on
@tfl
roads has cut the number of people being killed & seriously injured by 25%, with a
🚲9% fall in collisions with cyclists
🛵49% fall in motorbike collisions
& a staggering 64% fall in pedestrian collisions 🚶🚶
That's why we're rolling out more 20mph
The evidence in London shows that introducing 20mph speed limits has reduced collisions that result in death or serious injury by 25%
Safer speeds save lives.
TfL and London boroughs have been given expanded enforcement powers to improve safety for cyclists.
@TfL
will begin fining motor vehicles caught driving in mandatory cycle lanes and cycle tracks from 27/6/22
💥New research shows London LTNs cut traffic AND don't push significant traffic onto boundary roads💥
Westminster Uni research shows fall of average of 815 motor vehicles inside LTNs with increase of only 82 on boundary roads = 733 few vehicles a day.
Despite all the fuss electric cars are still only 9% of sales and the e-car fleet is under 17 million worldwide, while e-bikes are at 275 million,
In Europe, e-bikes are projected to outsell cars of any type by the middle of this decade.
I'm genuinely shocked by the absence of active travel in the COP26 transport discussions. Decarbonising road transport is a key part in tackling the climate crisis. We need fewer motor vehicles and those we do have, need to be cleaner/greener.
With funding now in place, I'm very pleased that
@tfl
is able now move head with the (long awaited) safety improvements to the A23 at Streatham High Street - including new crossings & cycle lanes.
We're building a safer, greener, healthier and fairer city for all.
With more people cycling, we need more bike parking. That's we're announcing more than £1million of new funding to create up to 2,000 much-needed new cycle parking spaces across the capital.
I'm delighted
@TfL
is rolling out another 65km of new 20mph speed limits on its roads across London.
People hit by a vehicle at 20mph are around five times less likely to be killed than at 30mph.
#VisionZeroLDN
Since we lowered speeds on the
@tfl
roads, collisions have fallen by 25%.
So we're lowering speeds on another 65km of TfL roads across Greenwich, RBKC, Lewisham, Southwark, Wandsworth, Merton, Bromley and Lambeth.
Slow down. Save lives.
For all the Twitter opposition: This is not party political - the Prime Minster, Mayors and scientists all agree we need to do more to restrict cars and enable more cycling & walking in our cities as we come out of lock down.
Finally published - government's own review into Low Traffic Neighbourhoods shows that they are generally supported!
Yet, despite their own research, this morning government has gone out with load of angry rhetoric against LTNs, 20mph & even bus lane cameras.
Desperate stuff🤦
It's shameful that
@rbkc
fail to listen to residents & have refused to reinstate the Ken High St cycle lane. It's a dangerous road. They must reverse the decision & make their streets safer for people to cycle. We're not giving up. West London needs a safe E-W cycle route.
I'm delighted the westbound cycle lane on Westminster Bridge is now open. This provides protection for people walking & cycling. Construction is progressing well on the eastbound side.
Thanks to the
@tfl
teams for the speedy construction.
I know there has been a lot of concern raised about the ‘see their side’ advert. The campaign has been paused to consider the feedback that has been received. City Hall and TfL remain committed to improving the road culture in London and reducing road danger.
👏👏👏
@MayorofLondon
“will not compromise on any moves that could reduce the effectiveness of the [ULEZ] policy, which is designed to tackle air pollution and climate change.”
Cycleway 27 along Torrington Place is being upgraded - better protected tracks, improved junctions and crossings. 👏👏
@CamdenCouncil
The
@MayorofLondon
's growing network of Cycleways enables more people to switch car trips to greener, cleaner & healthier ways of getting around.
"Motorists underestimate the full private costs of car ownership, while policymakers & planners underestimate social costs."
New research has calculated that the lifetime cost of a small car is about £500,000 of which society pays 41%.
Great to see Active Travel England finally being launched. £2bn to bring London-style walking & cycle infrastructure to the rest of the country. I’m looking forward to working with
@chris_boardman
& team
Highest levels of cycling in central London since records began 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲👍👍👍We had an average of 188,000 daily journeys or 573,646km per day in Q3 2018 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲👍👍
Fantastic to see 100s & 100s of women from all over London calling for more cycle routes, safer streets & cleaner air.
The majority of Londoners want more of these measures. That’s why
@MayorofLondon
& I are committed to making our streets safer & air cleaner for everyone.
Rather than putting up barriers to people using the greenest, healthiest & cheapest forms of transport, government should read their own review on this which concluded the costs & complexity of introducing a licensing system “would significantly outweigh the benefits.”
Thread Alert!! With public transport capacity reduced dramatically when restrictions area eased, up to eight million journeys a day will need to be made by other means. If just a fraction switch to cars, London will grind to a halt, choking our economic recovery.
Evening Standard View: "Cleaner air has come to a street, a school and a workplace near you. The Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) has expanded across all boroughs, meaning that each and every Londoner will be able to breathe a little easier."
In 12 months, 350 School Streets have been delivered across London to tackle children’s exposure to air pollution & improve their health.
A new
@mayoroflondon
study on school streets finds:
💚They reduce air pollution by 23%
🚗18% parents drive less
👍81% parents support them
London's Tottenham Court Road scheme has cut traffic by two-thirds and seen:
📉32% fall in traffic across the wider area
💚Improved air quality
🚲3,000 daily cycle journeys on TCR - 28% up in a year
Great work
@CamdenCouncil
@TfL
and all involved.
Really interesting independent polling in London:
📈Majority support ULEZ (58% vs 24%)
💚Majority support LTNs (58% vs 17%)
🚶♀️Majority say that more priority should be given to pedestrians (60%)
Research from the University of Bath shows that London's clean air zones have reduced air pollution, reduced asthma and long-term health problems, and have saved almost a £1bn.
The introduction of London’s first clean air zone 15 years ago has significantly improved air quality, according to analysis by the University of Bath.
They concluded that the clean air zones have helped to generate cost savings of over £963 million in Greater London.
#ULEZ
Absolutely delighted to let everyone know that tonight
@LBofHounslow
cabinet gave unanimous support for Cycleway 9. A huge thank you to everyone who worked and campaigned so hard. I can’t wait for this to be built - improving walking & cycling in west London 🚲🚶🏽♀️🚲🚶🏽♀️🚲🚶🏽♀️👍👍👍😊
Great work from colleagues in enforcement - it is not permitted to park on double red lines and delay thousands of bus passengers and other road users.
Slower speeds save lives.
We're planning to introduce another 28km of 20mph zones TfL roads in Camden, Islington, Hackney, Haringey & Tower Hamlets.
We'll work with the Met to ensure drivers comply with the new limits.
#RoadSafetyWeek
#VisionZeroLDN
WOW!👀
New research: Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in London deliver MASSIVE public health & economic benefits. The LTNs in just 3 boroughs:
💚avoid average 37 deaths & 500,000 sick days a year
📈deliver £1bn of economic benefits - inc £821m health savings.
Car traffic in London must reduce by 27% by 2030 to meet our targets to tackle air pollution & the climate emergency.
More than 1/3 of car trips can be walked in under 25min & 2/3 could be cycled in under 20 minutes.
New data from
@tfl
shows that cycling on Kensington High Street has more than doubled to over 3000 per day - all enjoying
@RBKC
's great new cycle lane.🚲🚲 When we make streets safer, many more people cycle - helping free up space on public transport & roads for those who can't.
Absolutely delighted to be reappointed as London’s Walking & Cycling Commissioner. Looking forward to delivering for
@SadiqKhan
and his great new team at City Hall.
Mayor of London
@SadiqKhan
confirms ULEZ will be expanded across Greater London on August 29 2023.
Five million Londoners will breathe cleaner air as a result.
🚲🚲New poll show huge demand from the public for more cycle lanes
🚶♂️🚶♂️Thousands across the UK have written to councils asking them to create ‘pop-up’ cycle lanes using traffic cones and signs.
🚲🚲 Number of cyclists on the road up by 70%
Time to draw a line under the LTN debate. New independent report shows LTNs
✅make roads safer
✅cut car use
✅increase walking & cycling
Future LTNs need more public engagement & be part of a package of measures.
But LTNs work & are here to stay
In London a quarter of a million car journeys every morning are for the school run.
If you can, why not walk, cycle or scoot with your kids? It’ll save you money, cut pollution and you & the kids will enjoy it.
Today I responded to
@Tony_Devenish
’s concerns, explaining how we are taking a data-led approach to transport investment and why we are making an effort to listen to all residents, not just those who shout loudest.
Today I've written to
@willnorman
in the light of deeply concerning information sent to me by a constituent. It would be scandalous if TfL are spending taxpayers' money to try to influence opinion on an
@RBKC
matter. I hope Will is able to guarantee that this hasn't happened.
Great myth busting piece in
@thetimes
today: Cycle lanes DON'T cause air pollution. Monitoring data from Upper Thames Street (CS3) shows reducing levels of PM10. The site achieved the annual mean & daily mean legal limits in both 2017 & 2018 – the first time it has done so.
📢New data shows Cycleway 9 in Chiswick success:
🚲 Cycle numbers up 72%, with bikes now 20% of all vehicles
🚑 Collisions down by half
💚 Improved air quality, with consistently lower levels of NO2, NO & PMs
@MayorofLondon
&
@LBofHounslow
- greener, cleaner and healthier
I'm delighted to introduce London's newest two cycle way gritters. 'David Plowie' & 'Spready Salted' join the fleet that help keep our bike routes open and safe whatever the weather.
Keep an eye out for the new cycle counters we switched on this morning. Now everyone can see the record numbers of Londoners who are cycling as part of their daily lives. Over 300 people went past this one before we could take a picture.
🥶It's chilly out there🥶
@TfL
cycle lane de-icing machines (inc the wonderfully named 'Chris Gritty') will be out on London's network tonight to help keep cyclists safe
We don't actually use grit as liquid de-icer is safer for bikes & it's non-corrosive so your bike won't rust
Green person authority signals give priority to people walking, showing a continuous green signal until a vehicle is detected.
@tfl
trial shows this new tech is making crossings safer & more convenient for people walking - with no impact on traffic.
42% of commuters live under 5km from work - less than 30min by bike.
Have you thought about switching your trip? It’s cheaper, greener, healthier, often quicker and it’s fun.
💥BIG NEWS 💥After an v positive response to consultation, Westminster Council is keeping the temp cycle lanes and will work to make them permanent.
👏👏
@CityWestminster
Looking forward to working together to make the streets safe for more active travel
Our new cycle lane on Hampstead Road is keeping cyclists safe from HGVs - safer cycling facilities enable more people to get on their bikes, freeing up space on public transport for those who can’t.
In summer 2020, we made changes to London Bridge & Borough High Street to enable more people walk and cycle - including bike lanes, bus & taxi lanes & wider pavements.
After listening to feedback we made further improvements and have now decided to make this scheme permanent.
Great progress being made on Cycleway 23 - connecting Lea Bridge Road and Waltham Forest to Dalston.
The
@MayorofLondon
's growing network of Cycleways enables more people to switch car trips to greener, cleaner & healthier ways of getting around.
Our new crossings prioritise pedestrians, as opposed to the ones we're used to which prioritise cars. These default to red for traffic & green for people. Sensors then pick up approaching vehicles triggering a countdown for the lights to change. Subtle but important changes
@TfL
1. Apologies for one of the dullest video clips ever posted but great to see the two
@TfL
Pedestrian Priority crossings in action on St Thomas St (the crossing from Guy's Hospital to London Bridge Station is normally used by huge numbers of people on foot). More of these please!!
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods cut road casualties by half!
New independent research using police data shows London's new LTNs dramatically reduce road danger - particularly for pedestrians - making neighbourhoods safer places for all.
20mph makes London safer.
Data shows a 25% fall in deaths & serious injuries & 63% fewer pedestrian collisions where TfL has cut speed limits.
Next week 20mph limits will be introduced on 28km of
@TfL
roads in Camden, Islington, Hackney, Haringey & Tower Hamlets
#VisionZeroLDN
As part of the
@MayorofLondon
#StreetspaceLDN
Plan, we’re creating one of the worlds largest car free areas in Central London to enable millions more people to safely walk and cycle. Some streets will be for walking & cycling only. Others will be bus, walking and cycling only.
Ever wonder how so many people can afford so many big expensive cars?
Personal Contract Purchases - 90% of all new car purchases in UK now use PCPs
Smells like a potential financial crisis in the making.
This summer
@tfl
& London boroughs have delivered over 85km of new & upgraded cycle lanes as part of the
@mayorofLondon
's
#StreetSpaceLDN
plan 🚲🚲We've seeing a huge increase in numbers of people using our growing network 🚲🚲 Much more to come ...
