Luas Ticket Inspectors have no remit or right to
1) Withhold a persons property
2) Assault them over at most €4 fare
The penalty for travelling without a valid ticket is €100.
The penalty for illegal parking can be as little as €40
No excuse
At 11am today, Capel Street will become permanently traffic-free. This will create a pedestrian area larger than Henry Street or Grafton Street. Huge thanks to everyone who made this possible.
New fares just dropped! The 90 min fare will be reduced to €2 across all modes from 9 May.
The Young Adult (19-23) and student 90 min fare will be just €1. You could travel from Maynooth to Bray for €1! 🚉🚌
Dublin Bus has officially callled for free public transport for everyone under the age of 18.
They want to instil in the next generation that public transport is the default choice
Most of the on-street parking spaces in Drumcondra village have been turned into outdoor dining spaces. Good to see some changes outside the city centre.
This was done after numerous complaints including from wheelchair users feeling like prisoners in their own homes on matchdays. Simple cost of living hack: if you don't break the law, you won't have to pay fines. 💸
South Dublin CoCo are now *intentionally* oncoming cycle traffic into each other.
*Intentionally* obstructing a footpath, making wheelchair access more difficult.
Pedestrians and cyclists FORCED to slow down for the crossing. Cars not.
This isnt safety. This is an absurdity.
This is false. From stop 4887 in the video to IADT is still two buses as before but is now 25 minutes quicker. People are being misled to oppose huge improvements to their lives.
1. The road is not being closed.
2. A short diversion for drivers is not what the word 'traumatic' is for.
3. Why is a construction diversion in Fairview on RTÉ News?
“Public transport is not just for commuting. We propose a simple change to currently planned bus routes which will allow public transport users to access some of the world-class nature and hiking locations on Dublin’s doorstep.”
🚌 🏔😍
Polite Question to Road Designers.
When you design this into your junctions, what goes through your mind?
Where do you think people are going?
Obviously, they want to cross the entire road.
They don't get to the traffic island and think
"Actually, naw, I think I'll stall here"
The fourth Capel Street consultation shows 93% support for keeping Capel Street car-free including 85% of residents and 71% of businesses. Now stop asking and improve the street. This is exhausting.
The fine for using public transport without a ticket is €100. You haven’t endangered anyone, you just utilised a public service without paying a few quid.
The fine for using a phone while driving, an act that could end someone’s life, is being raised. To just €90. Priorities.
We can't keep telling people to have an outdoor summer and then not provide the necessary services. It's clear that the weekend schedules are no longer fit for purpose. We saw these scenes last summer and we're seeing it again this summer.
Dublin to Kerry return by train: €73.98 🚄
Dublin to Kerry return by plane: €39.98 ✈️
This is a policy failure,
@EamonRyan
, and must be reviewed urgently. We're in a climate emergency.
If your car is stalling at 30 km/h then either your car is not safe for the road or you can't a car drive properly. Neither of these are reasons to increase speed limits.
What do these drivers do when driving through school zones and residential areas?
Man stands in front of the High Court and claims that a cycle track will be detrimental to the whole community while a van drives on the footpath behind him:
A legal challenge to the planned Sandymount Cycleway has been brought forward by
@mannixflynn
Objectors insist the bike track shouldn’t have been exempt from planning permission
This is fantastic news! "We will start next year and take out two of the lanes, and then the following year take through traffic out". As buses are phased out of College Green through BusConnects, the space will be reallocated before the plaza is built.
Dublin City Council will build a 3.5km segregated cycle route on Griffith Avenue been Ballygall Road and Malahide Road. There are so many schools in this area so this could be amazing! Work to start next week.
Time needed to cut fuel prices: 30 hours
Time needed to cut public transport fares by 20%: 3 months
Time needed to cut youth and student fares to 50%: 9 months
Car park owners have objected to the Liffey Cycle Route and wants compensation for 'loss of earnings'. It's time to stop listening to businesses that depend on our misery for profit. Join the
#LiffeyCycle
protest on Sunday 26th January.
Sorry, but it shouldn't be controversial to say:
"Don't buy a car if you have nowhere to keep it"
We'd say to exact same to someone with no garden who wanted to buy a hot tub.
No, you cant just put your hot tub on the footpath outside your house.
So why do we permit cars?
Dublin City Council and the NTA are looking at the possibility of pedestrianising College Green and widening footpaths on Dame Street on a temporary basis as part of its COVID-19 measures.
Good news! Dublin City Council will provide 80 bike parking spaces within a multi-storey car park on the Northside! A LOT of people have been asking for secure bike parking similar to Drury Street car park on the Northside so this is very positive!
We’ve had outdoor dining for weeks and weeks now.
But yesterday was a washout so saw loads of people posting videos of the rain saying this was “the reality” of outdoor Dublin.
What reality is that?
Mostly dry with the occasional wet day?
Yeah most cities are like that.
The driver of an SUV knowingly and intentionally breaks the law, removes newly added pedestrian space on a street that cannot be fully pedestrianised so as to make sure car park access is maintained, all while two Gardaí walk past.
Dublin.
@DubCityCouncil
A better solution is to provide more spaces so the concentration is not as high in one area.
But as we've seen from Capel Street, anything that interrupts private car journeys is unnacceptable
You’ll literally have a policy like “make air cleaner” after an EPA report on pollution, and radio stations will invite on the CEO of Blowing Smoke in Babies Faces Ltd to blabber on about how it’ll hurt quarterly profits by 2%.
The M3 to Navan was completed just 10 years ago. The Navan railway was never built in the same period. People can't get seats on buses now and are leaving at 5:45am to avoid traffic on the motorway. We've tried building more roads and it didn't work.
Dublin City Council has voted in favour of a 12 month trial of on the spot fines for illegally parking on footpaths, cycle lanes, bus lanes etc. as opposed to clamping.
Don't park on the footpath or you'll push vulnerable pedestrians into traffic.
Disgraceful to see this behaviour. It's rush hour and everyone should get home safely.
Saw this from the bus just now and I'm furious.
@GardaTraffic
@DubCityCouncil
The Department of Justice says we can't have an online portal to simply submit this clear evidence of dangerous driving because the video could be doctored. Other countries manage to do it just fine though.
Have you ever wondered how much of your local area is used for storage of cars? No? Well, we have. This is Finglas village. Everything in red is car parking.
It's very disappointing to see Lord Mayor
@AlisonGilliland
opposing permanent pedestrianisation of Capel Street and calling it an "artery" for motorists. It's an artery for the pedestrians squeezed onto its narrow footpaths.
New MetroLink visuals have been published! The latest official timeline is "construction of MetroLink is earmarked to commence in 2025 with a view to operation in the early 2030s".
You wouldn't know from reading this article that there were four consultations and that 71% of businesses were supportive in the latest one. That's not divided, that's overwhelming support. The numbers were higher for residents and the public whose opinions also matter.
@frankmcdonald60
@IrishTimes
Except it integrates with the existing transport system at multiple stations. It will be one of most integrated transport services ever constructed in Ireland
Whilst we understand exaggeration is the cornerstone of objection, moving one monument is not “laying waste to the city”
We're delighted to report that
@DubCityCouncil
has voted in favour of pedestrianising Lower Liffey St. Thanks to everyone who volunteered on Saturday and messaged your councillors!
#StreetsAreForPeople
A few years ago, Paris set out to build hundreds of kilometres of safe cycling infrastructure. It took some brave political leadership but they removed parking spaces and turned over half of some roads to cycle lanes. Thousands of Irish fans in Paris are enjoying the rewards now.
This is unbelievable. Brown Thomas car park threatens High Court action if Dublin City Council expands pedestrianisation of South William Street. How is one business allowed to hold a city back like this?

Strand Road will be made one way for through traffic for up to a year to facilitate Irish Water works. Yes, that Strand Road. By that time, the traffic changes will long have bedded in and there'll be no excuse not to build the cycleway. 🚲
Utrecht has revealed plans for Merwede, a 24-hectare site that will be a completely car-free neighborhood—with access to shared vehicles.
It will house 12,000 residents, with almost everything—including Centraal Station—within walking or cycling distance:
Your weekly reminder that buying a Land Rover is not a "small step in the right direction" towards sustainability. No matter how many times the Irish Times tries to make you believe that it is.
@rteliveline
@joeliveline
There is a perverse culture in our society that gives people the tenacity to commit acts of violence like this against people on bikes.
We tune in to most radio discussions about cycling and without fail the presenter will see fit to read out a rant about cyclists from a caller
There's an ongoing judicial review to bring cars back to this street. Every inch of pedestrianised street has to be fought over in this city. That's why Capel Street was such a big turning point.
Swords Road 'bus' lane at 1:30pm today. How many other cities allow cars to hold up public transport like this? Even a city like New York famous for its taxis don't allow them in bus lanes for obvious reasons.
Over the last 11 weeks, more than 300,000 people have experienced the traffic-free streets of Capel St & Parliament St. This weekend is the final scheduled weekend so be sure to check it out!

The marketing and resulting obsession with these dangerous vehicles comes from the same country that prioritises deadly weapons over children’s lives.
We need far stricter rules to keep them off our roads.
Absolute scenes in Malahide today. Kids playing on the street, people eating outside, people sitting on benches and enjoying the sunshine.
It's sad to hear that some people want to bring cars back. Please send an email to your Howth-Malahide councillors if you support this.
The public consultation on Capel Street and Parliament Street is now open!
Please ask for the most car-free options (Option 2 for Capel Street and Option 1 for Parliament Street, 7 days a week).
With restaurants only permitted to open with outdoor seating, it's more imperative than ever that we end the car dominance on Capel Street. We have space for public dining, we just need to use it. Just look at these normal people having fun on a car-free Capel Street.
This is a terrible mistake. DART Underground/DART+ Tunnel will not be delivered until after 2042 under the new draft GDA Transport Strategy 2022-2042. The route will be protected.
Tell me again... why anyone should be listening to
@Diageo_News
/
@GuinnessIreland
about their concerns for traffic management in Dublin City Centre?
Presumbly they'll just continue to break traffic laws when they change anyway...
Illegal, anti-social, discriminatory behaviour.
Ideally this car would be towed away and impounded.
Unfortunately it’s a complete free for all for entitled motorists to force the costs of their own selfishness on the rest of the community. Call them out & they’d fly into a rage
Dublin Bikes were not free or discounted today. Neither Luas, bus nor DART were free or discounted today.
Incentives were only offered to motorists on a weekend that saw Dublin's Air Quality dip into the Very Poor category
96% of respondents in last year's consultation wanted full pedestrianisation and a two-way cycle lane between George's Street and Trinity. It's time to get a move on!
NEVER EVER cycle through a pedestrian crossing when pedestrians are using it.
Cyclists maybe vulnerable to motorists, but pedestrians are vulnerable to cyclists.
They ALWAYS take priority.
Always.
Stop. At. Red. Lights.
Not only will the law be amended to make it easier to provide walking, cycling and bus infrastructure, it will be done through a bill due to be presented to the Dáil in the coming weeks.
A great result from the recent Sandymount debacle.
Fianna Fáil have accused the government and The Minister for Transport for being out of touch on eScooters.
Not Fianna Fáil tho, they’ve submitted a bill to the Dail that would fine a scooter €1,000 for speeding.
Speeding in an SUV for context is €80
We talk a lot about enforcement of the law in transport.
Blocking cycle lanes
Illegal parking
Driving in Bus lanes
No users of a private vehicle would EVER be subjected to such violence because of a perceived breaking of the rules.
But people who use public transport are
The leader of Fine Gael personally intervened to make sure vehicles were continued to be permitted through the Phoenix Park.
He also personally intervened to keep a level crossing open for vehicles to the detriment of Public transport.

With net-zero emissions by 2050 and a 51% reduction in carbon by 2030, Ireland is tackling this challenge head-on.

Plant the seeds of a more sustainable lifestyle by buying a tank with a 3L mild hybrid engine and parking it on the footpath. How can you publish this car industry propaganda,
@irishexaminer
?
This pub has to be demolished to build a vital interchange between MetroLink and 2 DART lines. They all meet here so there's no other option. This is the type of integration which Frank wrongly claims MetroLink won't deliver while objecting to measures needed to deliver it.
Interesting move. Brown Thomas comes out in support of pedestrianisation of South William Street and stops licensing their brand name to the carpark owner.
