Assistant Professor at The Salk Institute . Looking for inquisitive scientists to join the team and do cool science in cancer cells. (opinions are my own)
Emotional flow of science:
Failed experiment —>😢 it didn’t work —>😡 at the wasted time —>😓 the project is doomed —>🤔 new ideas to optimize —>🤩 for the next expriment!
Great scientists still have many failed experiments but they can move from 😥 —> 🤩 very quickly!
I had to work 3 jobs while finishing my Post-Doc and raising 2 kids. We NEED to pay post-docs more money now! That means we need to increase R01 budgets immediately!
Excited for
#BICRollCall
to re-introduce myself. I’m a K99/R00 Post-Doc
@CUAnschutz
getting ready to launch my own lab in 2021 (location TBD) studying autophagy and mitochondria in cancer. I’m a cell biologist and also a mom to 2 crazy boys!

. This is what a scientist looks like! Love my new team
@salkinstitute
. Lab is 7 months old - filled with 7 amazing women - representing 6 different ethnicities
2 months in! Building a lab with a healthy culture, filled with inquisitive scientists, that discover new and relevant biology in cancer has been a wild rollercoaster to say the least! Taking a minute to enjoy ourselves and celebrate 4 September birthdays in the Towers Lab 🎉
The hill I will die on: trainees should be treated like colleagues! Given freedom of thought, respect, benefit of the doubt with how they manage their work-life balance, and paid for their contributions! If these ideas cost me a successful career…so be it!
Please RT! Help us find some amazing post-docs, techs, and students to join the Towers Lab! Together we can build a culture of teamwork and inclusivity, centered around a passionate curiosity for pushing the limits of cancer cell biology.

studying

in cancer to understand why cancer cells become addicted to this recycling pathway and if they can develop alternate mechanisms to circumvent autophagy. I am a cell biologist and a mom to 2 crazy boys!

Not sure who needs to hear this but your mentors can’t help you if you aren’t honest with them about what your career goals are! If you can’t be open with your official PI, find an unofficial one. But you can’t navigate this crazy science life alone: academic track or otherwise
Shout-out to everyone who is where they are because of the behind-the-scenes support from an amazing partner! Mine is the best in the business and we celebrate 10 years married today! I don’t post personal stuff, but I wouldn’t be the scientist I am without this guy next to me!
Cancer cells sure are cunning! Check out our newest paper showing cancer cells that are highly dependent on autophagy can actually adapt to loss of such a critical process. So how do they do it?!? Mitochondrial derived vesicles!
So excited to tackle my biggest ideas thanks to
@NIH_CommonFund
and
@theNCI
. The DP2 New Innovator Award gives me the freedom to pursue

science. Stay tuned for new models to manipulate autophagy in cancer and study resistance!

Ugh! My deepest emotions right here! This came with tears as I wrote it...but I share it with the science community because I hope my story provides some comfort that you are not alone if you struggle with imposter syndrome too!
@BlackinCancer
Attention Post-Docs!! We would love to invite you to The Salk Institute to give a talk about your research, meet Salk faculty, and create career-changing networks! The first ever Salk Rising Stars Symposium will be on April 10th. Apply here! Please RT! .
Thanks for the shoutout! This

I am reflecting on all the great shoulders I stand upon and the tremendous support I have had up to this point.
Today for

we recognize rising star Christina Towers, assistant professor in the molecular and cell biology laboratory at the Salk Institute

Help spread the word: The Towers lab is growing! We are looking for research technicians to join our team. If you love cool science and you want to help build a supportive culture and innovative research program DM me or check out our website to apply
It’s TT job search season. I encourage everyone to be your authentic self! Talk about the science you legit want to do, the service you are actually passionate about, the things outside lab that bring you joy. If a school shows bias against any of that: you don’t want to be there
Shout out to all the scientists who are also moms and all the moms who are also scientists! A juggling act that IMO has made me better at both! Thanks to
@heide_ford
for showing me how it’s done. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!

Kicking off our 1st Towers Lab Brainstorming week with a day at a local coffee shop! No science/pipetting this week…just reading, writing, and thinking 💭 🤔 (which is of course the real science!)
If you all could see my view from the stage….an entire audience of black scientists and allies! Took every ounce of decency in me to not stop midway though my talk and take a selfie of me and the crowd!
Starting a lab is really hard. Filled with new daily challenges, lots of uncertainty and self-inflicted pressure.
But today was filled with tons of fun convos about science!
Remembering how much I love this crazy gig! 🔬❤️

As I’m reading graduate student applications and as your preparing for interviews, here’s my 2 cents:
I value humility over confidence, personality over professionalism, and hypotheses over results (when discussing your prior research).
Good luck to you all!
@ucsdbiosciences
I’m extremely grateful to the V Foundation for funding our work! Even more excited that my new friend and colleague
@ShikaRamanan

Great mentors will stay in your life far longer than just the time you spend in their lab! It’s been 12 years since I started my PhD with this amazing scientist, leader, mom, and mentor.
Great to hang with

Proud that I and many of my colleagues at Salk are helping to support our UCSD graduate students obtain a living wage here in San Diego where housing costs have become astronomical!
UCSD graduate students are integral to research at the Salk Institute. A group of Salk faculty have signed a letter supporting their effort to obtain fair compensation that allows them to live near the university.

One of the many reasons I chose to come to The Salk is this fantastic microscopist right here! Congrats Uri! Can’t wait to image some mitochondria together!
As part of its efforts to continuously attract and retain top talent, the Salk Institute has appointed imaging scientist Uri Manor to the position of Assistant Research Professor, which carries non-tenure faculty status. Congratulations to Uri and

Christmas Cocktails 🍸. Boys had a wonderful day, managed to cook a Christmas dinner without my mom and sister (my first Christmas without them,

), and delicious drinks to end the night! Feeling proud of myself. Happy Holidays everyone!
Very interesting thread and paper! I think the powers-that-be still need to learn that raising a child is a larger time commitment than just the first year of the child’s life, i.e. one year extension on tenure clock is not enough!
The authors estimate that, in the 10 years after the birth of a child, it would take women an extra 5 years to catch up for the loss in publications relative to men. (So perhaps six months for parental leave is not enough?!)
Don’t miss out on seeing some amazing science this month from talented post-docs all going on the market soon! How can you say diversity in science is only a pipeline issue when all these amazing women are right here?!?

@Athleta
for The Save the Space series to highlight diverse voices
If diversity, equity, and inclusion are the mission: that cannot START at how we admit grad students. It must begin in middle and elementary schools! How can we encourage institutions of higher education to invest in equal access to opportunities for younger students of color?
I appreciate the strong words here! But most of all I appreciate the actions listed at the end! All the emails from my university
@CUAnschutz
have been full of words but lack action.
