Mentee called. Shared that I was feeling overwhelmed, super raw, and wanted to go protest. She responded, "your excellence IS your protest." Some days, your mentees mentor you!! 🙏🏽
So many colleagues sent me thoughtful messages after reading the piece about my experience in science/medicine. But one trainee asked why I'm in a suit in all my pics/vids when I claim to wear a hoodie at work🤣. Sooo...new professional photo. This is my real Sciencing outfit.🐁
I can not give the same talk I was planning after witnessing this act of terrorism. I am re-writing it now. Forgive me for the last minute change in content.

Doing surguries w/ trainee today. Trainee: 'Oh, you like using the old microscope.' Me: 'It's not old, it's classic!!' Trainee: 'It says West Germany on it.' 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
HOW this happened --for the trainees-- I discovered HHMI before I knew what research was. HHMI was the ’96 Chicago Bulls. I worked for 2 decades to hone my craft at
@UMBC
@DukeNeuro
@MiguelNicolelis
@DukePsychiatry
. My first chance to make the HHMI squad was 2015.
I've accepted an invitation from
@SecBecerra
@HHSGov
to join the Advisory Committee to
@NIHDirector
. My areas of deep interest include: 1) improving our competitives by helping the enterprise to capitalize on all our Nation's talent, 2) Neuroscience -emphasis on translation ..1/3
I've recievced many calls and emails from colleagues asking for advice on what to do. Twitter isn't optimal, but I have grants and papers to get done, so this will have to do. In anticipation of this planning meeting... some concrete agenda items. 1/n

Huge congrats to
@KafuiDzirasa
of Duke Psychiatry &
@DukeNeuro
on his Presidential Award, the highest honor given by
@DukeU
to faculty & staff! The award recognizes his innovative research, extraordinary mentoring & tireless racial justice advocacy.
Watching the news. Somehow, it seems lost that we will, for the first time in the history of the US, have a woman Vice President. This is a remarkable moment in the story of our country. We have tremendous work ahead, but moments such as these are worth reflection!
I believe in MERIT. The issue is that historical systems in the US excluded the poor, women, and racially minoritized groups from competing. Multiple practices have allowed the impacts of this exclusion to persist. 1/5.
Elise Adamson is brilliant. This is the us celebrating her HHMI Gilliam award. Same year she was selected for NSF and FORD awards. Technichally in neuro and biomedical engineering. You might want to get in the recruiting line now. She'll be defending soon!
#BlackWomenInNeuro
To the young scientists..work that led to this honor was supported by my first R01. It wasn't renewed. Painful critique was, "modest productivity." But ALL criticism can be useful (accurate or not). Revised proposal/submitted to new study section. Got funded 8/19! Keep Fighting!
Moments like this don't happen without a ton of mentors and coaches investing in you. It would do their contributions an injustice to simply list and tag them, but you can read all about this cast of remarkable men and women when the memoir comes out 😉
Dear US public, thanks for providing $3M to support our efforts to cure mental illness. We will develop new tools to make sense of electrical brain waves using machine learning and to regulate the emotiomal state of the brain. Coming soon -Explainable Electomics
@NIMHgov

Freeman Hrabowski trained and prepared a 17 year old kid for this moment. This is his 60-year non-violent protest of the entire academic system. This is our protest.
Mentor told me that all of my accomplishments belong to him. He said, "if you ever want credit for something, YOU go mentor someone else." So proud to take FULL credit for

lead and build a better planet. My child got my CV looking nice.
Dr. Ransey is a STAR. As new postdoc, she took over half my engeineering lab. Filled it with pipettes, chemicals, reagents, and a PCR machine 🙄🙄🤔. Then raised almost $1M. Wait till she reveals the science 🔥! Neuro 👏🏽 ain't 👏🏽 ready 👏🏽. Coming soon!
#BlackWomenInNeuro
Thinking about hosting a zoom session in the next few weeks for anyone interested in learning more about Freeman Hrabowski (his background, experiences, and values)....from a mentee perspective. Wondering if anyone would come..... 🤔🤔🤔

Goals supporting early career faculty committed to advancing diversity, equity, & inclusion in science (1/7) <PLEASE RT!!>
Not here to change anyone's mind. All I ask is that when women from minoritized group win, despite being so encumbered by the system, YOU who champion MERIT would lift THEM up, celebrate THEIR success, and promote THEM. They ran a far harder race and still won! -MERIT. 4/5.
Last year a mentee (nameless) told me his career goals. I told him I would pull them off within two years just to prove that he wasn't dreaming big enough. Pulled them off in 14 months. There are no ceilings mentee...dream bigger.
ALL trainees COMMITTED to EQUITY should actively consider a career in academia! 🙏🏽 It may be hard and lonely at times, but its the UNIQUE space to shape the next generation of scientific leaders.

@BlackInNeuro
Is it just me, or has
@CellCellPress
press been doing it?!?! It seems THIS institution was actually serious about ending racism in science. Commentary, inspirational lists with role models, cash prizes?! This is what true action looks like. Come thru. 💪🏾
Trainee after
@SfNtweets
lecture..."8 years ago when I was in high school, I sent you an email asking if I should go into neuroscience. You said YES. I'm now a 4th year PhD student" 😭😭😭😭....also, I feel really old right now 🤔 📸
@IshmailSaboor
The last few years have been filled with amazing triumph and tragedy. But nothing comes close to the joy of getting these three through. An NIH NRSA fellow, an NSF GRP fellow, and an
@HHMINEWS
Gilliam Fellow. All 3
@UMBC
Meyerhoffs. All 3 Doctors! All 3 hooded in 5 weeks.
Those contending that a 14k raise for postdocs would collapse the enterprise make the case that postdocs currently serve as the HIGHLY SKILLED low-cost labor force that keeps the research ecosystem thriving. I agree with the latter position. Postdocs deserve more.
'Every great champion will one day end up lying on their back with a challenger standing over them...' -Author Unknown (maybe Tyson). BUT 👏🏾NOT👏🏾 TODAY 👏🏾.....not today. I come for the coins.
I've read statements from MANY leading institutions and societies. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm about to go get some ice cream. As an academic, I appreciate clearly written facts. As a clinician, I realize the importance of an assessment/plan.
To all the trainees... no, you don't have to choose between doing high impact science, science communication, public engagement, OR just being a good human. 'Genius of the AND,' not the 'Tyranny of the OR.'
Long overdue wellbeing time for the Lab! With increasing Delta, dining indoors seemed like a bad idea. So we brought the restaraunt to us. Great time with the crew and dear colleagues. AND multiple alum came home. 👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽 Human connection is such an important part of science.
I met
@BrielleRyan
during a visit to
@Stanford
before the pandemic. She told me I was one of only a handful of Black neuroscientists that she had met. I told her that it wouldn't be too long before the whole world was inspired by her! So so proud! This new gen is 🔥
YA'LL, I've got some news! I'm over the moon to announce I'll be joining Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Genetics and Neurology.
HOMEWORK: Scientists like data. I like ML, so leaving this right here. -Recruiting Black faculty is not enough! WE must transform entire enterprise if US science/medicine is to benefit from diversity. Retention is waaay too late to start discussion.
Totally overwhelmed with PRIDE! Dr. Rainbo Hultman
@brainbolab
has been awarded the
@NIHDirector
New Innovator Award. This is the most competitive award for new investigators. Around 5-7% award rate at my last check. This is Rainbo's first NIH Grant. No NRSA. No K. No K99. No R21
Cameron Blount joined my lab as an undergrad. Probably the most naturally gifted set of scientific hands I've seen. Now a second year med student
@EmoryUniversity
. My guess, in a few years, she will be operating on human brains!
#BlackWomenInNeuro
Dr. Lemons-Valdez is my newest postdoc. Started in the middle of a pandemic and research lockdown. But watch out! She is coming for all of your fellowships! Funders, please get her money ready. We prefer it in Tubman's. 😉
#BlackWomenInNeuro
I've rebranded my lab. Why, you ask?!? Because my younger brother, founder of the now most profitable minority owned small business in Baltimore, made me watch this clip.
Visited
@theNASEM
today. Security staff asks for my ID. I whip out my new NAM member card..being Xtra. She responds, 'oh..you're a member!!' Other staff shouts, 'I KNOW THAT'S RIGHT'. 🙅🏾♂️🙌🏾 The 3 of us geek out for a few mins. I walk down the hall and see this! I KNOW THAT'S RIGHT
Rachel volunteered in the lab as an undergrad at

For the trainees- hard work, passion, and patience will give you great aim (sharpshooter). But ONLY constructive criticism will help you figure out WHERE the target is. In engineering/business, this is called product testing. Great aim with no knowledge of the target is pointless
Shout out to the NIH Institute Director who had already reached out and committed to closing this gap, immediately. 🙌🏾. You and the team are doing some remarkable work!
Many calls and emails today. Colleagues asking for advice on building diverse/inclusive teams of world class talent. Me? I studied Coach K, Nick Saban, Pat Summitt, et al -Build a pipeline+recruit aggressively. What you see now is the end product👇🏾2017!
I couldn't imagine having more respect and admiration for someone than I do for
@kaymtye
. Please read her thread. Some that hold positions of power may worry that harassment claims can be weaponized against them. To this, I say, SIT with that feeling. 1/3
When I was an undergrad, I was sexually harassed. Complaints about inappropriate behavior made the postdoc I worked for would send me home without pay. Any day that I complained was a day I couldn’t earn wages. 2/n
Back-2-back 🏆 Focused mentoring, impactful research, and an inclusive enterprise are not mutually exclusive. In fact, THEY ARE SYNERGISTIC. The mentees gonna have a field day with this prize money. 🤦🏽♂️ What's the NC gathering limit these days? 🙄 ...Back to mentor training...
Join us in congratulating
@KafuiDzirasa
of Duke Psychiatry &

on winning the

's 2021 Ruth & A. Morris Williams Faculty Research Prize. Hear Dr. Dzirasa talk about the groundbreaking research that earned him this award:
Here is what we plan to do with this $5-6M. Create a scientific environment where 1) innovation thrives 2) people of all education levels and backgrounds can contribute 3) and the community drives scientific discovery to ensure its broadest application. 1/2

This was the 5th iteration of the proposal. Applied for high-risk BRAIN R21 (second one funded). Applied for Pioneer Award..not funded. Applied for TR01 (not discussed) ‐>applied for the Pioneer again....cause 'rejection = escalation^2'🤷🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
A trainees asked about my penchant for scientific risk taking. Now thats an easy one. As I've said since my college track days, 'I would rather lose being me than win being someone else.' So, the only real risk is not following my intuition.
Super excited to finally share this! Been in the works for years. A calabo w/
