Here’s a hot take that might lose me some friends 🤷🏻‍♀️ but it seems obv: Grad students are the lifeblood of academia. We must raise their stipends above the poverty line so they can focus on research instead of survival. When the union strikes, we (PIs) should strike with them.

If an investigation gets to the point of removing someone, you’d better believe it was an egregious offense. So few perpetrators ever face any consequences. Even faculty who sexually assault students often just get a slap on the wrist. 4/

@batssiki @PaulRoundy1 @yael_niv Sure, but usually these things are just rebels fighting against an elusive and ill-defined "status quo" that everyone thinks they understand. When you unpack it, it isn't what it seems. No one is biased against women in STEM anymore. You have power and support. It's 2019.

Actually, working moms today (on average) spend the same amount of time playing with their children as stay at home moms in the 50’s. And in MY experience, I have not had a single trainee where I felt that hours available for working was the limiting factor for productivity.

@schoppik Being a good postdoc at a tier 1 school requires a lot of time, no getting around it. Being a good parent requires a lot of time, no getting around it. Being a good parent means you have less time for work, and a postdoc with kids who is a good parent is less productive.

Embarrassed to admit I have cried in the office of every PI i have ever worked for at least once. 😅😬😭😳 Think they were probably all at least ugly if not loud. Thought I was a freak, but seems pretty normal now that I’m a PI. Across genders, crying is not uncommon.

A student cried from stress in a meeting with me today & then said they were embarrassed. I told them about the time I loud ugly cried in a prof’s office during my MA programme. They said knowing that helped. How many of y’all out there have cried in a prof’s office?

Friend: “why don’t you just delete your Twitter account?” Me: “because it gives me a chance to hear all the stuff that people really think when they wouldn’t say it to my face, and it helps me see the blind spots that I have in my own implicit biases.” Friend: “... fair.”

Let’s just take a moment to reflect on what this trend will do to our society and culture. We should not have to choose between family and science. Women in Science. Lessons from the Baby Boom | NBER

@mnitabach @jonykipnis During the zoom meeting i had to interrupt bc I had thrown up a little bit when he suggested that the abuser take a vacation and the victim finish his paper for him. You pretty much summed it up.

To all the parents judging me for making my kids watch Contagion: Before: 4yo drinks water from the shower drain in a public locker room 🤢🤮 After: 4yo says “I’m not touching my face!” And “I have to wash my hands again...”

The smartest people I know: 1. Admit they know very little 2. Constantly seek more info 3. Encourage intellectual debate 4. Have strong opinions, loosely held 5. Are comfortable being wrong 6. Surrounded by best people 7. Realize life isn't black & white 8. Fear bias & arrogance

The result of my reporting it directly to the PI without involving outside forces and enlisting powerful allies (of which I had none) was catastrophic. Lost my job in the lab. Lost authorship on a proj i had invested 2 yrs in Lost my letter of rec 7/n

@yael_niv A key factor in a successful #PowerHour is just having a more diverse speaker lineup... here's our #BiasWatchNeuro -inspired gender audit for the #GRCAmygdala #AmygdalaGRC over the years. More diverse speakers reduces stereotype threat. For the 1st time, we have parity! 7/n
