Your friend. Jesus loves you. Pastor at St. Andrew Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Rockton, IL. Owner of the Green Bay Packers. My wife is the best of me.
American™ Luths: "The Lutheran understanding of the canon is too complex to explain to layfolk. Just mimic the Fundie Prots on 66 books."
Lutheran Layfolk: "The Star Wars expanded universe is complex, with differing levels of accuracy among Legends. In this essay, I will..."
Prayers, please, for my sister and her unborn baby’s safety.
She is nine months pregnant, has Covid, and the winter storm in Virginia knocked out power and heat. Indoor temperature is down to 49°. Roads are still impassable, stores all closed.
Lord, have mercy.
We had a scary moment with our littlest saint last night. She woke up in terrible pain, saying: “Tummy need bandaid!” A trip to the ER provides no answers. She is home now, but we’ll be doing more testing in the days to come. Please pray for our sweet little one.
“Hi, your church looks so pretty! How much do you charge for a wedding?”
Well, my services are free to—
“Wait. Really?! Free?!”
—to members after completing pre-marriage counseling.
“Oh. We aren’t really religious. How much if we don’t buy a membership?”
🫠
Friendly reminder: Luther didn't "break his vows of celibacy to run off with a nun."
He was released from his vows by Staupitz a full 8 years before marrying Katerina von Bora, who had lived against her will in a convent since the age of five.
Katerina wrote to Luther for aid.

Would it kill TV and movie writers to do just a little research on actual Christian theology before writing such trope-y characters?
Like, I shouldn’t hear a RC priest or Lutheran pastor blabbering prosperity gospel or Osteen self-help crap.

Others who’ve held the office have been restrained by conscience, or at least fear of how they’d be publicly perceived. This man is unrestrained and his interests align only with his own greed.
Update: Thank you all for your prayers. God is good.
She was alert, taking fluids and doing the baby equivalent of cussing at the nurses. O2 is where it is supposed to be, X-rays were normal. It’s a virus of some sort (not Covid). She is resting well now. Going home tonight!
Quite literally the first advice my dad gave me when I became a father:
“Your wife will have endured such pain as you will never know, to give you such a gift as you yourself could never have. Show gratitude; change every diaper you can.”
Dad was right. Dad knew best.
If a man is ever changing diapers, there is something seriously wrong with the relationship or with the order of the home. It is a sign the family has much bigger problems.
By the grace of God, I —an unworthy sinner— will be ordained a pastor in the Lutheran church tomorrow.
I covet your prayers, that I would faithfully serve God’s people, seek the lost and fulfill my vows.
If you’d like to watch the livestream, DM me and I’ll share the link.
If there is proof of God’s love and mercy for His Creation, it is that He can use even so great a sinner as me to serve His people. I have been called to pastor the congregation at St. Andrew Lutheran Church & Preschool in Rockton, IL. By the grace of God, I will. SDG.
Note: whoever describes the sound of children walking as “the pitter-patter of angelic feet” has never met children.
It’s a stampede of buffalo being chased by screeching velociraptors.
Easter was originally a pagan holiday to Ishtar.
That’s why Christians celebrate in the spring. The theological connection to the Jewish Passover (celebrated for centuries prior to Ishtar worship and explicitly noted several times in each of the Gospels) is pure coincidence.
The oldest known depiction of the Crucifixion of Jesus seems to be some Roman graffiti from about the year 200 AD.
It's called the Alexamenos Graffito and it's a mockery of Christianity - Jesus has the head of a donkey and the words say: "Alexamenos worships his God."
Ok, this is the promised thread about the canon, specifically the Lutheran/historic small-c catholic understanding. It’s by no means comprehensive, but I hope it’s a helpful starting point for folks to learn a thing or three.
Sometimes, the old satanic foe cuts power to the organ. So the congregation sings A Mighty Fortress a capella.
And sometimes pastors have to deliver a sermon while holding a two-year-old.
Sometimes it be that way.
Tell me this to my face. Tell me I felt no sorrow, no grief, no pain when we lost our Charlotte. Our child was a human being. She will rise when her Lord says “Talitha cumi!”
You also will rise one day. You will meet the same Lord. I sincerely pray you know Him before then.
Take a look at this image. Let it wash over you. This is what the church does. Whether in times of war or times of peace, we witness to the One in whom we trust.

“Redtails” is waiting right there. With terrific history, and a ready logo. Plus, P-51s are the coolest plane ever to fly. Do it!
I am blessed with three very patient young women. After four years of drifting where the Spirit wills, these kids will finally have a place to call “home” after Tuesday. Call Day is just a few days away!

She committed an invasion and a murder. Period.
Please pray for my brother-in-law and his girlfriend. They’ve both been diagnosed with COVID.
We spent much of last week with him, so we were tested today. We’ll have our results tomorrow. We’d appreciate prayers that our tests would come back negative.

Today, we bury my Nana.
God the Father who created her body, God the Son who by His Blood redeemed her body, and God the Holy Spirit who by the waters of Holy Baptism sanctified her body, keep her body in holy rest until the Resurrection.
Luther trusted Katerina, whom he called his “rib” (for she guarded his heart), with the managing of their finances. He even did something illegal at the time, willing all his possessions to her (a woman!) at his death.
They were a model Christian family.
Baptized another baby today.
Not sure if it was joy, or just gas… but when that little girl received the Sign of the Cross during the minor exorcism, she smiled. And everyone saw it.
God is so, so good.
Tomorrow is baby day.
If you would, please pray that the Lord, our Great Physician, would grant wisdom and skill to the surgeons attending to my wife and child, that our little Penelope would safely join us.
Last post for awhile.
We had an ultrasound yesterday. Baby had no heartbeat or movement. We're at the hospital now for delivery.
We take comfort knowing Baby heard God's Word in the womb. God willing, we'll meet them in the New Creation.
But it hurts. Pray for us.
An icon of the Pantocrator was in the pulpit when I arrived here. Not really sure where it came from. Vacancy pastor says it is not his doing.
But it will remain here to remind me: we preach Christ crucified.
Confessional Lutherans teach that “the one holy church is to continue forever.”
If anyone insinuates that the church needs political power to continue, or that its future is somehow in doubt—ignore them and their false idols.
Dr. Cooper’s experience is all too real, and not limited to the AALC. Other church bodies, including the LCMS, have been targeted by these ideologues.
My own family has been on the receiving end of some of these coordinated attacks from the far right.
Claim: I forced the AALC to kick out a pastor who was ministering to the Alt-Right.
Reality: A non-ordained man began an organization whose stated purpose was to infiltrate and take over Lutheran congregations with far right ideology. This included forcing out pastors from their
Today, the church rejoices in the work of the Good Shepherd for His daughter, Grace. She was confirmed in her Baptismal faith, and received the life-giving Body and Blood of Jesus. Praise be to Him!

Who is the theologian outside your tradition who would (in a dream) fit best within your tradition?
I’ll go first: Pope Benedict XVI would make a fine Lutheran.
Yesterday, I visited a man who was conscripted into the Nazi army at age 13. He struggles even to this day with the horrors he was party to in war.
But forgiveness is his through Jesus Christ. So he received Absolution and the Lord’s Supper.
That same forgiveness is yours.

And the Vikes were only in playoff contention in the final weeks because of an absurd call on Clay Matthews in weeks 2 & 3 (cost the Packers a full 2 games on the Vikes), and an untimely fumble in week 8 by an insubordinate player who was subsequently traded.
What’s your point?
I'm breaking my Lenten fast tonight and returning to Twitter.
It’s not like I've failed to complete a promise to God or anything; God does not need my good works. But my neighbor does.
My soul is heavy. Apologies for the incoming thread.
Mandalorians are the Lutherans of the Star Wars universe.
Ancient religious beliefs, big on family, despised by some, claimed by others, and if there was any doubt: their moon is literally “Concordia.”
They probably charge a billion credits for books too.
Today our confirmands received these magnificent, hand-crafted crucifixes. The cross is an anchor, the symbol of St. Andrew. We pray this gift reminds them to ‘anchor’ their faith in the same Lord of our congregation’s namesake: Jesus Christ.
God blessed me far richer than I deserve here. Patient instructors taught me so much here. Joyful brothers inspired me so much here. My forgiving family loved me so much here. I will miss it here.

So there’s this pervasive lie that "Luther took books out of the Bible.” It stems from the difference between RC Bibles (73 books) and so-called “Protestant” Bibles (66 books). The 7 OT books in question are called “Apocrypha” or “Deuterocanon” (DCs) depending on one’s tradition.

No female is impregnated without a male biologically. Therefore, that male should be required by law to provide half of the support — both physically and financially — till adulthood.
I suspect that might change the intervention in women’s right to choose for themselves. ✊
First day of school for my incredible bride. She patiently and selflessly put her own career on hold so I could pursue my calling. Now, finally, after four long years she has her own classroom in a public Montessori school— her dream job. Praise be to God!
Tonight’s bedtime prayers:
Me: Thank you, Father, for the faith you’ve given to my girls.
5yo: Thank you, God, for the best day ever and family time and playing outside and for Grandma and Grandpa and... (99 unique bids later) Amen.
4yo: Thank you for cows.
Amen, indeed.
I would appreciate your prayers.
I am one of 12 people headed to the Holy Land today. We are the first touring group since before the pandemic.
Prayers please for safe travel, edifying study, safe return, and peace of mind for our families while we are away.

Have we had Matthean priority discourse lately? I feel like we’re overdue for Matthean priority discourse. Anyway, let’s have Matthean priority discourse.
I’ll start. The four Gospels are:
• Matthew
• Travel Matthew
• Extended Matthew
• John
