RIP to Hank, one of the best racetrack ponies that ever lived. I’m not too sure how old he was but when I bought him at CD in 2003 I got a good price because he was “already old and didn’t have that many miles left”. He retired from the track in 2015 and passed away today 😢
Being a horse trainer is impossible.
It’s difficult to find live bodies to work let alone good employees.
If you have good horses there are all sorts of people micro managing what you should do and if you have bad horses it really doesn’t even matter because they are bad.…
being a horse trainer is not easy.
pressures.
fragile athletes.
dealing w owners.
chasing bills.
jockeys and jock agents.
and coordinating all the new rules.
i could never be a horse trainer.
Dear Photographers (freelance, credentialed or other)
You have my permission to use any shot of any of my horses, anyway you choose to, no strings attached. However if you take a picture of me it must be photoshopped so that I appear to weight no more than 220.
Thanks!
Chuck
Whoever decided that they should show jockey cam angles DURING the race should be proud of coming up with the dumbest idea in a game overflowing with bad ideas.
Several years ago I trained a horse that had been imported from South America. He was an older horse and he had run quite a bit but was sound, a bit quirky but otherwise straightforward.
He had come in in the fall and by late spring he was getting close to being ready to run
🚨Breaking News:
NY Racing Commission announced this afternoon that in light of the Chad Brown situation and arrest of 2 grooms on drug charges that Richard Dutrow has had an extra 120 days added to his suspension effective immediately.
Flightline is an amazing horse. As great of a modern day racehorse that you could ever hope for.
There is really no reason he should keep racing. Has proven greatness. Has no rivals to beat. No new worlds to conquer. No race he won’t be 1-9 in.
Only downside exists.
Props to Gustavo Delgado for an amazing training job. To have a horse with 3 starts and only 2 of them two turn races, ready to run that race is incredible stuff.
This is what my horses look like after they are retired. If more people took care of their business and made the effort we wouldn’t have issues like with these awful Louisiana rescue people. Trainers and owners be responsible and do the right thing!
#ourhorsesdeservebetter
Never be afraid to talk. Never think that no one cares. Nothing is ever as bad as it seems.
Another friend of mine took her life today, another good person that got stuck in a bad place and thought suicide was her only way out. Reach out when you feel broken...
If you think that Eric Reed has a hop so good that he can turn a horse into a Derby winner don’t worry because clearly based on the past 35 years worth of his results he only had one dose and was saving it for for the big one
“What do you do?”
“I train racehorses”
“Oh that’s all rigged right?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well you guys all know who is gonna win the races before they run?”
“Yes we get up at 4am 364 days a year just to cover the fact that we all make millions betting on the races”
The problem with racing is that it has never really learned how to deal with issues in a manner that multi-billion dollar industry should. The whole California situation is a symptom of racing’s lack of intelligent, meaningful leadership over the last 50 years.
The decision not to let jockeys travel between tracks is the RARE decision made that is not in the favor of the 'haves' which racing always seems to be a slave to. The big picture view is whatever allows the best chance of keeping the show going (for everyone) must be done
Race 2 at CT. Clueless trainer (zero lifetime wins) drops horse to bottom off of good effort in allowance race 3 weeks ago. Horse breaks down after 1/4 mile. Trainer should be ruled off. Asshole trainers never drop horses off of good races w/o reason. Scumbags kill the game
Please just stop the whining about Monmouth. It’s over 100 with the heat index at GP for 2 months straight and few issues. Heat index is over 90 at Palm Meadows now at 7:30am, just another day. People act like really hot days never happened before
In all seriousness horse racing has a problem when performances like what we saw in the Malibu make you feel uneasy. I’ve seen a lot of great horses do great things in my time. However at this point I’m not sure I believe what I see is real anymore. Perception is reality 🤔
There was no inquiry and the horses rider that claimed foul wasn’t fouled.....yet we have a DQ in the biggest race of the year. Welcome to horse racing!
Anyone arguing against Equinox as a great horse is laughable.
That said the idea that every great horse that comes down the road has to be declared “the greatest” is silly too.
Enjoy the great horses while they are around, they don’t last long these days.
I wonder if Rick Violette had any idea about the level of respect that he had earned through the years. I’m guessing that he would be a little embarrassed yet proud about the huge amount of sentiment that followed his passing.
This industry deserves so much of what it gets.
@BelterraPark
management, the racing secretary, the state vet and stewards all need to answer for todays 8th race. The racing commission needs to wake up and do their job. THIS ISNT HARD! The trainer/owner should be barred asap.
Dear Breeders Cup,
I hate to sound like the ugly American but some changes are probably needed to make the grass races competitive. Suggestion - All Europeans carry 138 and Buick has to wear a blindfold as well.
It sounds extreme but we stink in the grass.
Thanks!
And Larry Rivelli also made all the right moves, took a totally unconventional route and almost pulled it off.
It’s too bad that the narrative coming out of this race will be agendas not great stories and tremendous training jobs
Props to Gustavo Delgado for an amazing training job. To have a horse with 3 starts and only 2 of them two turn races, ready to run that race is incredible stuff.
I will honestly say that my desire to discuss racing matters on this forum is eroding daily. I don’t block or mute many people because IMO it’s important to see all views. However the constant barrage of lunacy or unbridled shilling is reaching radioactive levels.
Racing customers - “We are upset with the fields on one of racings biggest days”
Racing - “OMG you get to see Flightline!!! Do you know how rare that is??? And a matchup to see what female turf miler is the best in Chad’s barn! OMG OMG my bow tie is falling off I’m so excited”
I’m wondering how Forte will be able to compete in the Preakness considering he is on the Kentucky Vet list for 14 days and has to work to get off of it 🤷🏼♂️
My proposed Schedule for a new Triple Crown:
Derby - 1st Saturday in May
Preakness - July 4th
Belmont - first week in October
This way horses can run in races in between Triple Crown race like they did in 1937 to quell the protests of the traditionalists
#traversasaprep
It’s nice that people are finally catching up to what I warned about years ago on
@Steve_Byk
show many times. If supertrainers can have unlimited horses eventually they will have ALL the good ones and run them only when they have an edge. In the end it’s just math.
Condemning rough riding by Paco/Irad or last few days Saez is fine but as
@UrbnHandicapper
can attest, we have been saying loudly (for awhile)it’s a SYSTEMIC issue that is getting worse because the regulators/stewards/tracks have failed to properly address it time and time again
I find it amusing that racing twitter is just now finding out that really rich people can sometimes act like petulant children and view the world from their own version of an ivory tower 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is simple. It’s CDI’s race. They set the rules. Everyone knew the rules when they nominated their horses to the Triple Crown. It’s literally written in the regulations. All this other talk about most talented horse and restricted races is stupid.
Where are you people when…
“If several of the most talented three-year-olds in the country are prevented from running in the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks, does this make them restricted stakes?”
Nick de Meric in his Letter to the Editor.
@jose93_ortiz
@FalconeJr
So if a jock happens to strike a horse 1x more than allowed on 3 occasions, they are barred from the grounds (essentially for three strikes of the whip)…yet trainers with (literally) hundreds of violations over the years are perfectly ok.
🤷🏼♂️ what happened to this game?
Let me just make this clear as I can. This limit on purses for claiming horses is a slap in the face for horseman and owners and should be left to the tracks and horseman to negotiate. It’s an intrusion into the business practices of private companies by the govt and is an
Bob Baffert says he will not be going to Baltimore this week. He does not want to be a distraction. Assistant Jimmy Barnes is traveling with Medina Spirit and Concert Tour
@wave3news
This is madness.
@hisa_us
has decided that the owner of the horse get a $26000 fine for doing NOTHING and the jockey who committed the violation gets a 3 day suspension and $500?
Can someone explain how this is ok?
Seriously who thinks this is ok?
Full investigation over yesterdays non-DQ underway at the Spa as the foul sniffing dogs have been called in. Let’s hope they get to the bottom of this!
@UrbnHandicapper
Let’s just be serious for a minute.
There is NO ONE employed in the racing industry who is tasked with “growing the sport”
Zero people.
Perhaps this is a reason why things never get better but it’s silly to claim that is what people are hired to do. They aren’t.
It’s unfortunate that a really great performance by Chez Pierre and an excellent training/riding job by Delacour and Prat are overshadowed by the plague of late odds plunges regardless of the reasoning why it occurs.
I wish there was a bury your head in the sand emoji.
If he had gotten even a decent steer last week, Keith Desormeaux would have won the last 2 Derby preps.
#imstillmad
Can’t say enough about the job he does with relatively cheap colts bought as yearlings. They get to the races, they improve and they dance a lot of dances. Too…
Horse racing defunds the TRPB. Wonders why juice trainers run amok? Tracks slash marketing and press office budgets. Wonders why we get no coverage? Racing spends years working on off track platforms. Wonders why people don't come to the track anymore?
But hey no lasix 2yo races!
Stanley M. Hough saddled his last horse today at Churchill Downs. There is no better man or horseman than him, in that order. He’s been a mentor and one of my best friends for a very long time. Our sport is better for him, and my life would not be the same without him. ❤️
It’s insanity to fine a jockey 5k for 7 strikes instead of six strikes. The
@caCHRB
is a joke and the stewards and exec director should be unemployed after Fridays debacle.
Here is my official statement about the Eclipse awards voting, abstentions, eligibility re:positive tests, etc.
I don’t care.The modern game has made these awards almost completely worthless. 2 win campaigns. Amazon vs mom and pop stores on the human side. It’s a waste of time.
As a trainer when your horses work good It kind of regenerates some of your enthusiasm that’s been sucked out of you by the usual BS. When they don’t work so good you get the feeling like “God I wish I was a stay at home mom “
Im horseracing’ed out today. Still incredibly mad about the Friday situation and the ensuing disgraceful press releases. Aggravated that I didn’t bet better yesterday. Tired because I’m old. Gonna punish myself by going to get some wings and watch the Dolphins/Texans debacle
Cant blame people for being disgusted w/NYRA stewards as they simply can’t do their most important task with any semblance of consistency.
Stewards should be employed, trained & graded by a central authority as officials in real sports are. The current system is a nationwide…
Dear horse racing people in KY,
The voting by your senate re:HHR should reveal an important fact about politicians, A LOT don’t care about the commonwealth, it’s people, jobs, horse racing, tracks, farms, etc.
They ONLY care about getting re-elected and retaining power.
What’s lost in “who is taking credit for Omaha Beach scratching” controversy is that no one made any decisions. The xray machine made the decision, there was no option once pictures showed what they did. That’s not damming or praising anyone, it’s just the facts.

True story: I claimed trainers claim of foul three times one week at Turfway. Of course all three denied & probably should have been. Veitch called me and said why are you claiming foul so much? I said to make sure you guys are paying attention. He didn’t really like that answer
Lazarus believes if the industry works together and genuinely makes a collective effort, then fans can eventually expect no fatalities. She adds that is the ultimate goal.
The idea that simply changing surfaces will somehow ensure the sports future shows a complete lack of understanding of the foundational issues that exist.
It’s often stunning to me that so few grasp that if we self-immolate, the political pressure and public view and AR groups…
Interesting about The Rebel. First 4 finishers carried 5 pounds Less than 5th,6th and 7th
@OaklawnRacing
I am Not using this as an excuse for my colt, But ALL Kentucky Derby preps should be equal weights
@KentuckyDerby
