No one bats an eyelid paying £100+ for an on call plumber/electrician etc. but woe betide if the doctor who is working out of hours to look after you/your relative is asking for more then £14-£15.
@EthersonKevin
And in all honesty, just go to any current A&E dept, it’s rammed, waiting lists are the longest they’ve ever been. If you really want to fight about neglecting patients then you’ve got the wrong target.
It has become extremely difficult to engage with anyone on Twitter/X regarding the current PA debate. Often more than not due to the following reasons.
1. Referring to PAs as “failed doctors” or “Failed to get in to medicine”
2. Personal insults/Pile ons
@EthersonKevin
How are patients being neglected? Junior doctors are leaving because the conditions are so bad. If anything they’re fighting for a better future
In to any role where there is a shortfall/lack of service.
PAs should not be on any reg rota. They shouldn’t be on any doctor rota altogether. It needs to be made extremely clear that PAs are in addition to the medical team not a substitute.
Pa students - don’t waste your money paying for “OSCE prep” courses. They are praying on peoples insecurities. I can guarantee that 99% of people who have attended those courses would have passed without the course. Happy to give free advice if people dm me.

Sounds like you’ve got some excellent PA’s. But I’d argue by saying “they’re better than doctors” it creates anger particularly amongst JD’s who are paid less, have expensive exams and will often be the ones who work with those PA’s to assist with prescribing/scan requesting.
If
@TheDA_UK
has been made aware of illegal activity then surely the appropriate action for patient safety is to escalate this to the police/trusts/FPA. Not the newspapers.
🔴NEW: Physician associates accused of‘illegally’ prescribing at dozens of NHS trusts and missing life-threatening diagnoses, dossier claims.
@TheDA_UK
’s survey of 600+ medics comes as
@TheBMA
says “still time” to stop “dangerous” PA regulation 🧵
My take on this: Trusts/GPs are misusing/slotting PAs in to roles which aren’t appropriate for them.
I expect part of issue is that that trust probably has PAs who are seen as a good asset to the team. Therefore the decision has been taken to slot that “good” professional
Assured it's safe yet?
For a Reg to be on that rota they would have completed ST4+ (intense exams & rotations across numerous departments)
How do they ensure a PA whose 1st job from uni is at
@BWC_NHS
has the same level of rigorous training/experience/knowledge as an ST4?
I’ve always tried to be pragmatic and listen to all views and understand peoples frustrations around the role.
It has become quite difficult to login to see many people wish that my job just didn’t exist.
It cannot be disputed that there are many legitimate concerns surrounding PAs, the scope and the implementation. My concern is that legitimate concerns will morphed into “let’s just delete the role all together”
@codingbrown
@DrLindaDykes
Appreciate the sentiment but these sort of comments only divide roles. Happy to be seen as doing a good job in my role but would never want to be considered that I “outrank” my doctor peers. Definitely not.

I’ve thought about this and your reply is worse than the video. It’s the fact that only now you’ve been called out you think the video is the issue rather than the lack of equality between clinical staff and admin/managers.
1. The Gov ran the consultation not the GMC.
2. It is not the role of the GMC to listen to doctors interests its a regulatory body.
3. The BMA knew about the consultation but didn’t tell its members.
Don’t let facts ruin another good PA bashing.
The GMC intentionally left doctors (the professional group most affected) out of the public consultation on PAs in 2017.
This has been proven through an FOI.
The consultation was hidden from us, and it is invalid.
We won’t have it.
Now’s a great time to engage

The sad truth is and I’m sure a lot of PAs would hate to admit it.
A good majority of us would have done GEM if it was more favourable/more financial help.
We give our staff free parking (which they’d get in any other sector) a pointless certificate and a single teabag! Congrats on your hard work, well deserved.

Literally couldn’t care less what PAs are called. Just seems like a way for the crab brigade to get “one up” on the profession.
No real evidence that a name change will improve knowledge of the role.
Patients will still think someone reviewing them in a medical capacity
Motion to rename PAs and AAs assistants has been tabled and signed by 3 MPs so far.
This name change is crucial to prevent confusion for patients.
@PreetKGillMP
@KeeleyMP
please add your names to help us improve patient safety.
@MarkusNash4
They’re not in training, they’re qualified doctors. Is it fair then that a doctor has to spend 5 years at university and then at least another 10 years in speciality training with 100k of student debt?
Why would anyone become a doctor when they could earn more/less stress?
Targeted at anyone with an alternate view.
3. Lots of mistruths and hearsay about the role.
4. Lots of contradictory statements.
5. Insulting PAs generally (typically referring to them as idiots).
Many accounts keen to have an opinion on training, scope of practice and title of PA’s. I’d at least had thought they would have had researched what it entails to qualify as a Physician Associate.
Classic
#medtwitter
mindset, instead of focusing on the reasons/addressing the issues I stated for rejecting medical school, they’re inciting a pile on. Doctors need to realise that accounts like these will ultimately not help their cause.
Do these two posts look contradictory to anyone else?
Note ‘I could have got in to med school’ vs ‘I did get in’ a few minutes later.
And
‘I applied to PA instead (of medical school), why would anyone apply’ vs ‘I applied for both’
Comical. 🙃

It’s a reasonable take. We as PAs have been told there will be no consultant PAs/we do not want this either. It’s therefore surprising to see it on this tier list.
@codingbrown
@DrLindaDykes
There will be some fantastic medics who are arguably taking the responsibility for prescribing and scan requesting for those PA’s and they equally deserve the recognition.
Given that the current RCP president has the audacity to call out junior doctors to a national newspaper. They don’t even have a mandate as they didn’t win the election. They came 2nd and are now President out of circumstances. Should have had another election
Transparent but won’t tell us the breakdown of the cost of the £211. I appreciate

It’s true. Mine didn’t but I do believe some PA courses have tried to pass off equivalence. Unfortunately this is something we have to unpick. When PA students tell me they’re “studying 5 years of medicine in 2 years” it’s important that this ideology is corrected.
So it’s
#PAWeekUK2022
- some of
#medtwitter
are doing their best to degrade the profession but PA’s are here to stay and we will keep doing what we’re doing!
It’s a real shame, only 5% of current doctors ~10% of BMA members answered this survey despite it being banded around constantly on here/by the BMA. Clearly shows that there are more pressing issues doctors are concerned with such as pay restoration.
@Xeon4f145d96s1
You’ve got a real bee in your bonnet for PA’s this week, lay it off a bit? It’s getting a bit tiring. Daily posts bashing PA’s on PA week is a bit distasteful.
Honestly, can’t believe some people have such a god complex regarding other professions performing a similar role that they would go out of their way to completely undermine these professions.
To all
#physicianassociates
the
@FPARCP
guidance is clear. Do not take on more than your contracted role during strike days. Do not take on additional overtime, this undermines the strike. Only do exactly what you would do on any other day.
People like to compare their pay to other professions to “start a discussion”. It doesn’t, their intentions may not be malice, but it leads to people role bashing. Moaning on Twitter won’t fix your pay.

That’s kind of you to help, but one bad example doesn’t mean all cries for help are a “scam”. There’s other meals in the day apart from tea, would be losing weight. May not be near a refuge/appropriate for children. It’s entirely plausible.

There is, you haven’t completed a PA degree/sat the FPA entry exam. Why do you insist on degrading our profession by saying you could just apply for our job?

@WayneSwann9
Gotta agree, it’s wrong to say you “went to medical school” if you didn’t finish your medical degree/did PA. It’s misrepresentation. We are our own role, it blurs the lines by saying “I went to medical school”
@eggy74
Junior Doctors’s aren’t trainees. They’re qualified doctors. They pay a significant amount in to their pension also.
The electrician/plumber would also not have their student debt a junior doctor has.
@thegradmedic

@_garmc
But surely you can see how the tone of your initial message comes across, not only is it belittling nursing associates it’s belittling PA’s too?
@Doctor_Erin_
Most of those discounts are pointless anyway and most you can’t actually redeem at any reasonable time. “Only available on Thursdays at 14:35pm if the temperature is exactly 18 degrees”
@doctorrah
I’m sure on the other hand the consultation to switch to the alternative forceps was next to none. Cost saving. Procurement are not medically trained and it’s very dangerous having them make decisions like this with little to no consultation.
@PamelaAmeliaK
You’re a highly educated professional - should be paid every minute of your time imo. If you called a plumber/electrician would they only bill you for 75% of the time it took or all of their time?
@anonPA5
Just a bunch of hot headed people thinking that the BMA actually holds any power. Perhaps they should stick to pay restoration since that’s going well for them.
You have until 9am on 14 April to accept or reject:
- £1,655 - £3789 cash payment for 22/23
- 5% pay uplift for 23/24
- national policy framework for safe staffing
- specific work to improve career progression and pay for nursing

Why do you post these lies? It’s absolutely untrue what you’re saying.
The majority of PAs are paid at band 7. Many PAs were AHP in Band 6+ roles prior to applying for PA.
There is absolutely no evidence that PAs “failed to get in to medical school”.
