The single most meaningful thing you can do right now is put on an N95 and wear it everywhere. It's worth 1000s of "sad"/"care" FB emojis left on posts about kids or adults dying from COVID-19, flu, or other diseases.
Hey Covid-aware Canadians. If you ever visit Saskatoon, never stay at the anti-mask Riviera Motor Inn. My wife & I arrived for a night's stay and at check-in, the receptionist instantly stiffened when she saw us. This is what happened:
R: Everything OK?
Us: Yes, why? 1/5
I had one of those Schrodinger Covid experiences today. Walked into a coffee shop in my N95 (as usual). An unmasked woman saw me, visible panic building on her face; she quickly put on a surgical mask and ran out of the shop. I know that some of you have experienced this and 1/
He shrugged & gave us a piece of paper to write down our info for the Mgr. "Don't expect him to call, though".
We canceled our reservation & found a different motel.
The widespread lack of knowledge about respirators is partly due to Public Health misinformation.

2023 starting off this way:
-Covid exists, but only in China. Everywhere else has NotCovid.
-If you travel here from China & are +, off to quarantine! If you're from here, don't even test. Testing provides data, data reveals reality. Who needs that crap?! 1/4
the instinctive reaction is to troll them by going *cough cough*. That would just reinforce their incorrect ideas. I wanted to say "I'm wearing this so I don't get infected, as Covid is everywhere. Unlike that surgical mask, an N95's primary purpose is to protect the wearer". 2/2
I like the
@flo_mask
. Good seal and comfortable. This is what my wife and I will wear when we resume vending at farmers' markets in a few weeks. One can either farm or be sick, not both! A single bout of COVID-19 can ruin our entire season; Long Covid can ruin our career. 1/2
@KashPrime
I understand your point, but as a childless person who continues to wear an N95 everywhere, I have to address the ๐ in the room. What are we doing about the parents who refuse to mask or vaccinate their kids? They're projecting their biases onto their children, & we all suffer.
Us: Yes, and Covid too. That's precisely why we wear N95s, so we don't get infected. Do you not see the illogic in your colleague's behaviour?
H: Logic is subjective
Us: Science isn't. May we speak to the Mgr?
4/5
R: You have masks on. I'm concerned for my guests' safety.
Us: We wear these N95s everywhere to protect ourselves from Covid. We're the last people you should be concerned about.
R: *instant escalation* You can take your business elsewhere.
Us: May we speak to the Mgr? 2/5
@JeromeAdamsMD
All good points. I'd add:
1. An N95 respirator is 500x more effective at trapping aerosols than a surgical mask. Both ways. The best thing HCWs could do is swap out their baggy blue for an N95.
2. Nothing wrong with protecting yourself. Nothing. More people need to hear this.
R: He's not in.
Us: OK, what's his name?
R: I won't provide that info.
At this point, a coworker arrived. She asked him to handle us and huffed out.
I explained what had transpired.
Him: Well, there's a problem in Canada right now.
Us: What do you mean?
H: Lots of flu.

Hi, I'm Adithya. I'm a farmer from Saskatchewan, ๐จ๐ฆ . I'm in a Canadian Tire hardware store looking for a new battery for my tractor. We come from around the ๐ & diff walks of life, but we share a common goal to not get COVID-19 & not pass it on to our families or the community.
Hello, Iโm Dr Kaplan-Myrth, a family doctor in Canada. I also refuse to be an accomplice in the (re)infection of my patients and community. I will do what I can to prevent spread of
#COVID19
, to educate people about
#LongCovid

๐งตI'm a vaccinated Canadian farmer from Saskatchewan. I support COVID-19 vaccine mandates in all professions, hospitality, air/rail transport, and cross-border travel. The reason for my support is simple: unvaccinated people are much more likely to end up in hospital, 1/
Disheartened to see formerly cautious people I know give in & resume risky unmasked indoor activities. It's not that the risk of COVID-19 finally declined to their pre-set threshold. They've elevated their threshold due to social pressure; the illogic of that drives me nuts. 1/4
If you're Covid-cautious & wavering on ๐ท because of peer pressure (real or perceived) from people around you, recognize that your first COVID-19 bout won't give you the closure you seek. It silently opens the door to more misery - reinfections (each with Long Covid risk) & 1/2
@JasonM98282978
"Any suggestions on coping with gnawing pangs of hunger? Do not suggest food! I will not eat under any circumstances!" would be my response.
If you have NotCovid, definitely don't wear a mask. They do nothing other than creating immunity debt. Be virtuous, so go forth and multiply your viruses (unless you came from China of course! Off to quarantine where an unmasked worker coughing with NotCovid will assist you). 2/4
A common sentiment I see expressed among the Covid-aware is "People think I have Covid & give me a wide berth when they see my respirator. I love it". I don't, and this is why. Irrational people are ultimately dangerous people. I'd rather deal with Covid apathy than 1/2

Keep washing your hands and coughing into your elbow. We don't want to overdo this NotCovid thing, and elbows are better than face coverings specifically designed to trap your infectious aerosols. You might see some anxious people wearing those anyway. Tolerate them. 3/4
If you shop at farmers' markets, please wear a good mask or respirator while shopping to protect your farmer(s) and ensure they can continue putting food on your table without interruptions. Farming is a 7 day/week job with no built-in slack for sick time off. 2/2
9hr flight + 6hr train ride (๐จ๐ฆ-๐ฉ๐ช-๐ซ๐ท); no unfiltered indoor air inhaled. I alternated between this comfy Breathe respirator & an N95 (Aura 9210+) w/ sip valve for hydrating. Don't add airborne illness to your travel plans - filter the air you breathe in public transportation.
Yeah, yeah, we wish they'd jump in with the rest of us into our NotCovid reality. Give it some time. There will be bumps in this journey, like CHINA!! Don't worry, governments, border officers and public health have this all well under control. Smile! 4/4
@MalakaGharib
Our old lives aren't returning. We have to adapt our new lives- and that doesn't mean giving up activities. It's all about making then safer. Some, such as indoor restaurant dining, can't be made safe right now and must be given up. That's OK. Look at the big picture.
@idea_alchemist
Ironically, if everybody wore a respirator, nothing would ever need to be shut down, even temporarily.
I wonder when people & governments are going to figure out this basic fact.
@oliver_phil
Most people run offline to get some grounding in real life. I on the contrary find that the science discussions and access to data as it comes out on Twitter provides knowledge, which is the best form of grounding. I'd hate to face this pandemic without knowledge.
It can be tough to thread the needle on Covid caution while still trying to be social. We attended our new ๐ซ๐ท village's Christmas fest today, an opportunity to introduce ourselves. We kept our Aura N95s on, handed out some maple candies as a nod to where we came from, watched 1/3
I heard about a distant family member, supposedly cautious, who got COVID-19 on vacation. They intentionally refused to mask, otherwise it would "ruin" their vacation. I wonder how many of the Covid-from-vacation anecdotes stem from behavioural errors like this. 1/2
Crowded outdoor settings, like this Christmas market in rural ๐ซ๐ท, or *any* indoor setting - my N95 goes on. Picked up ๐ local ๐ฏ mead, ๐ง & ๐. The past year has been hectic for us as we sold our farm in ๐จ๐ฆ & laid the groundwork to move here, my wife's home country. 1/3
Finishing up our 3rd pandemic summer selling at the Saskatoon Farmers' Market. Our mitigations (respirators and CR boxes) have kept us safe from COVID-19 all summer, despite a high-density indoor environment. Don't hesitate to practice mitigations in your lives and encourage 1/
If you're an MD arguing against the physics of respirators, ventilation & air filtration in reducing exposure to airborne pathogens, you are pro-lockdown. Your relentless heckling & anti-science rhetoric effectively ensures that governments & people erroneously & tragically 1/2
@TRyanGregory
BS. Wearing N95s certainly didn't interfere with my seasonal business . On the contrary, being able to operate without falling ill was the most profit-friendly action I could take.
On the demand side, I continue to support business, again with N95s. Restaurants = takeout.
...turned out if SARS-CoV-2 had not jumped into humans, but it regrettably did, & this is our new reality to live with for the long term. Human behaviour doesn't determine our reality. For those also trying to walk the fine line, stay strong and keep protecting your health. 3/3
@Coreybirch
@PeaceStBridge
@oureric
You can still get into an accident despite being an experienced driver.
That doesn't take away the need to be licensed.
Try again.
@PremierScottMoe
Saskatchewan farmer here. I don't mind the carbon tax. I do mind how our healthcare system is bulging at the seams and is going to have even more pressure heaped on it after removal of all mandates. How are you standing up for me? Please explain.
@sanjeevsanyal
Some of those infections are COVID-19. Why is that a taboo subject now? Wear a respirator-style mask (KF94, KN95, N95, N99), get updated on boosters, & ventilate places where people gather. COVID-19 also impairs some people's ability to fight off other infections (flu and colds).
@SabiVM
Sounds like a Covid Compliance Officer was involved. I took the CCO course some months ago - the instructors did a good job of balancing the facts (aerosols, ventilation, masks) with the mantra dictated by PH (sanitize surfaces and hands constantly).
@TRyanGregory
The Japanese have obviously perfected this approach, but some variation of using water for cleansing is pretty common in the Middle East & other parts of Asia as well, at least wherever running water is available. Dry TP is the worst method.
This is the side of Covid Twitter that I dislike, and it's due to the rampant misinformation I read on threads like this. Look, I understand if you're one of the rare cases who had a truly bad reaction, and I get those who only want Novavax. (Also my non-exclusive preference).1/4
@karen_kelowna
Living with it is *exactly* why we use mitigations like respirators. I don't know how to drum this into people. I discuss this on FB occasionally. Engagement is low. It seems like people are mistaking "endemic" for "inconsequential", which is a grievous error.
Spouse and I are Nova-vaxxed! We made a 10 hour drive to Kalispell, MT, to get it. In a few months, we'll try to boost it with a chaser. Remember, folks, that no vaccine is a silver bullet for COVID-19. Get vaxxed, wear N95s, and clean the air. Be safe out there.
Unless there is a paradigm change in either the virus or our immunity (a sterilizing vaccine), I plan to wear a respirator indefinitely, probably the rest of my life. It's worth noting our lives are just tiny blips in humanity's existence, so it isn't synonymous with "forever".
Masking is not living in fear of the "post-COVID world" nor is it a stubborn refusal to go back to "normal," but a recognition that normal (in a 2019 sense) doesn't exist anymore.
@trvrb
In other words, the most antigenically distant variants yet. Just when are regulatory agencies going to drop their roadblocks for rapid vaccine updates? I didn't give anyone permission to be part of this infection experiment. We have vaccine tech that works - let's use it.
There was never a truly "safe" time to be unmasked indoors since this pandemic began, but the relatively least dangerous time in N. America was in early summer 2021, with vaccine effectiveness at its peak - it matched the variant circulating (Alpha), & cases were low. 2/
@KathrynHenzler
@KashPrime
Especially as neither you nor the kid is responsible for the situation. Those who've been fighting mask mandates and child vaccination mandates bear the responsibility.
Folks who upgraded from disposable N95/N99 to new-gen elastomeric respirators like Breathe by
@Prescientx1
or
@flo_mask
, do you notice an increase in passive-aggressive responses from others? My wife & I have. I'm not sure I want to waste energy learning the psychology behind it.
What *has* changed in a good way since Summer '21 is that many of us have a much better understanding of how SARS-CoV-2 spreads, and it's easier to access comfy, high-quality, effective respirators now. Use your knowledge & tools; don't copy others' risk-taking behaviours. 4/4
@NjbBari3
Most HCWs, to say nothing of the general public, don't understand what "exposure" is when it comes to airborne pathogens. You can be 50 cm away from the infected person and not be exposed if wearing an N95, or in a giant mall unmasked with that person 50 m away and be exposed.
Instead of heckling Covid-aware folks, physicians could spend their time & energy lobbying to use tools that reduce COVID-19's burden on society. More frequent vaccine updates, respirators in healthcare & all other essential spaces, clean air. They self-portray as victims 1/
@DCDoc33
@Stephan90411631
@DellAnderson
It is not acceptable that a single person (judge) can have so much influence in raising a person's risk of acquiring a lifelong disability, using the threat of contempt of court for objectors. What a horrific situation for jurors to end up in.
...with people who behave irrationally like this hotel staffer and end up treating maskers with hostility or worse. It *will* get worse for us. If the situation allows, explain to the folks avoiding you that respirators Protect The Wearer. This message needs to get through. 2/2
An important reminder if you've been tempted to drop precautions. Each infection is a spin of the Long Covid roulette wheel. Just don't gamble in the first place. N95๐ท.
People aren't masking because people aren't masking. If that sounds like circular logic to you, you're right.
Another random person saw my respirator and asked if I was sick. I said no, and mentioned that I hadn't been sick in 4 years. It appeared to set some wheels turning in his head. If people aren't rude, I take the time to explain how respiratory viruses transmit. Many don't know.
Public Health everywhere screwed this up with their "your mask only protects others" messaging. It's completely false when it comes to N95, N99 or P100 respirators, symmetrical in their high efficacy for both wearer protection and source control.
@AndrewMeffan
@lizzyinyyc
Yeah I really donโt understand why everyone always thinks Iโm wearing a mask because Iโm sick, when they themselves are actually sick and are not wearing a mask
A lot has changed in the subsequent two years, and not in a good way. Prevalence is off the charts and vax effectiveness is much lower (on all aspects). People have implicitly assumed that time = progress in controlling the pandemic but it doesn't move in a straight line. 3/
@Ctzen_Improver
It's my first really blatant anti-mask experience. I lived in the Saskatoon area for 21 years. I think things are getting subtly worse.
@evly843
Yep, exactly.
Unfortunately, it all happened too quickly, and I didn't want to appear threatening by running after her to talk about N95s. They have to be receptive to info, and that can be hard to gauge on the moment.
@LazarusLong13
My spouse and I use air curtains in our market stall. Cleaning the entire building would require 30+ units and that's out of our control, so we use an air curtain from 2 CR boxes to keep us safe(r) and reduce near-field transmission risks from customer interactions.
@indehisce
@denise_dewald
The hardest part for me is the role reversal vs my parents. Instead of them advising me, I'm doing that for them, and steering them away from the constant torrent of misinformation and peer pressure to return to normal, both online and offline.
@maosbot
We aren't actually doing even vax-and-relax. The whole "vax" part is missing. It would necessitate vaccine updates every 4 months with high uptake each time. Public Health ruined it even on this aspect. It's actually "nothing-and-relax" for most.
@1goodtern
I've been considered weird all my life. I DGAF. What's another layer, especially one where I objectively know I'm right and the majority are not?
The mob rioting in Ottawa *does not* speak for this farmer, or any of the farmers I consider my friends. I also abhor the links that this mob has with racism, both subtle and overt. 9/
@CarrieWilbur1
@brianvastag
@NIHClinicalCntr
A. They should know by now how to visually differentiate a cloth mask from a (K)N95. Otherwise they're in the wrong profession.
B. Surgical masks are not fit-tested and can't be. An N95 always beats a surgical either way.
These mandates have allowed our economy to rebound earlier and faster than it otherwise would have, and has helped businesses like mine stay afloat. These mandates have benefited me and every other farmer I know, even if a few don't admit it publicly. 5/
and since our hospitals are under tremendous pressure, they need all the help they can get. Canadian society simply cannot function properly if healthcare is denied and critical surgeries get postponed. 2/

@elray67
@alexmeshkin
Other than restaurants/bars, business should be able to function normally even in that scenario. The key is proper enforcement of N95 mandates. Private gatherings are another Achilles heel. Too bad, because life could continue fairly normally if humans were responsible.
@1goodtern
This misconception about cold air causing respiratory infections is unfortunately ubiquitous worldwide.
I lived as a teen in Kuwait and one of the worst colds I caught then was in May. Average high: 39ยฐC. It's all about dry, stuffy, people-y indoor air.
A small but vocal minority of people from across the country, bubbling with impotent rage at being "made" to do something, are trying to hold our nation hostage through bullying and violence. Meanwhile, their misguided and completely confused supporters 3/
@EricTopol
Time for the world to adopt the French example and institute vaccine passports. Enough pandering. Our ancestors volunteered willingly during WW2 to carry out their responsibilities as citizens instead of complaining about "rights".
I will not tolerate the hijacking of our shared identity by the mob in Ottawa who are horrifically misrepresenting the concept of patriotism. I encourage fellow Canadians to denounce this in unison. Speak up! 11/
@MoKaStHa
@1goodtern
We were vendors at a farmers market this summer and wore N95s all season ๐. Remember that you don't have to model what the mob is doing. Sometimes the others are wrong, even if they're in the majority.
@Welnesschick
Of course it is. I don't even bother with the eye protection, personally, but it doesn't hurt. I've been on many trips with N95s (no eating in planes/airports) & no Covid.
Mitigations work. The virus may have a high R0, but it can't beat the laws of physics.
@BCChildrensHosp
The parody writes itself.
A hospital in a developed country in 2023 asks people to wait until they are "well" before visiting, because it takes too much mental energy for staff to wear an N95 respirator and improve ventilation and air filtration.
@westcoast_4ever
@drdagly
They contribute to that propaganda machine though. They are not absolved of blame, not even once they inevitably end up in hospital. I reserve my sympathy for the cancer patient or transplant recipient whose bed they took.
@mitrades1
@calirunnerdoc
No, it's COVID-19. Sudden deaths are also occurring in ๐ฎ๐ณ, just reported even more poorly.
Follow
@Rpshahmemorial1
; he's reported the same pattern of increased susceptibility to other infections post-Covid. Same everywhere.
@CactusAndy
I detest it when they ask this question. You gave the right answer, though. I dislike that some C-aware folks answer with "I might be ill asymptomatically" when that is the most unlikely scenario. Be straightforward with "I'm protecting myself from all of you". It's the truth.
@chrishughesto
@JacobBAguilar
I've had coworkers stop talking to me because I'm "negative" for stating truths. Toxic positivity is a religion for many. Similarly, they unleash fire and brimstone at those who don't toe the line they've set out, and they derive ongoing strength from the majority agreeing.
are trying to drum up popular support by invoking the trope of the hard-working farmers, restaurateurs and truckers, destroyed by federal and provincial governments' vaccine and mask mandates. The truth is exactly the opposite. 4/
@JeremyWingert79
One of the reasons we can't process the trauma properly is because the pandemic is still ongoing, with no clear picture as to how it will end. The "how" must be answered to know the "when".
This "get sick to build up your immunity" is ubiquitous across cultures, but it makes zero sense with pathogens that damage the immune system (HIV, measles, SARS-CoV-2, etc.). If people query you on your respirator, explain that you're protecting your immune system. It's true.
@Ellen_Lee3
That's ridiculous. If he's worried about comfort, there are nice elastomerics out there. If he's concerned about perception & image, there's nothing more pathetic than someone who cares more about that than his own health (or his spouse's).
We had an opportunity to get a 2nd bivalent booster (Moderna BA.5 again) while abroad, so we took it. ๐ vaccine demand is plunging, & since public health has embraced you-do-you, it's important that Covid-aware people not be obstructed in getting boosted 2x or 3x a year. 1/
Other infections, including colds, that are giving a lot of people a rougher experience than was typical pre-Covid. You might end up deciding to ๐ท again (a wise decision). Those intervening months of faux-normal would've achieved nothing beneficial. So, keep ๐ท & stay well. 2/2
@HeathrowAirport
@BirgitC
Everybody is vulnerable to COVID-19,
@HeathrowAirport
.
There is no logical reason to force people to unmask in the security process. You're scanning them for contraband, which can be done with masks on. It's not a beauty contest for noses and mouths.
As a visible minority Canadian, farming on Treaty Six territory, I am keenly aware that numerous cultures โ Indigenous, European, African, Asian, and many others, have built this country and shaped our Canadian identity (and continue to shape it). 10/
New variants that partially evade immunity are a concerning curveball to contend with, but the fundamental truth doesn't change - vaccinated people have far better odds of staying out of hospital. 6/
Life owes us nothing at any time whatsoever. Risk is unrelated to how much you intend to enjoy the moment. Wear a respirator, be aware of infection risks, mitigate them accordingly, and enjoy your vacation. These aren't mutually exclusive! 2/2
If you fall into the trap of "I'm wearing an N95 anyway, I don't need boosters", a common sentiment in such threads, you're making exactly the same mistake as those who treat vaccination as all the armour they will ever need. It's all about piling on risk-reduction layers! 3/4
I'll be getting boosters regularly, w/ a modest preference for Novavax for durability. With a dental appointment coming up, we just got another booster to reduce the risk of infection/LC. This is borne out by science; don't reject protection because you don't like PH or govt. 4/4
The best position we were in, immunologically, was in summer 2021, in the wake of a mass vax campaign against a closely matched variant (Alpha).
We're much worse off now.
If you were ๐ท that summer & not today, consider the illogic of it.
๐ท up with a respirator in public.
We continue to see patients with COVID-19 as infection rates hold steady across our region. Weโre averaging about 15-20 COVID inpatients per-day, some in the ICU. Meanwhile, weโve now hit peak RSV season and flu cases are beginning to rise in the area.
