Flying today. A
@delta
pilot (🤯) walked by me in the airport and said, take your mask off man- breath free!
Why is it those who so strongly felt others were imposing their beliefs (in health, wellness and compassion) on them, feel so free to impose their beliefs on others?!
I get the frustration and the intent, but is anyone else a little uneasy at how
@POTUS
seems to be blaming everything on the unvaccinated? This could backfire. Many minorities still have historically founded reservations. Many people have honest questions… 🤔
Prayers requested for the most beautiful cancer fighter I know. My wife’s melanoma is back and treatment has been really hard on her. She gave me permission to post this to ⬆️ melanoma awareness. See a dermatologist right away if a mole changes /looks different from your others!
The reason we didn’t recommend masks for respiratory viruses prior to covid is that most people were symptomatic-
So our advice was simply to stay home if sick. Covid (50%+ asymptomatic) changed that logic. But it also revealed most people weren’t staying home even if sick…
Twitter tip for the week:
If you tweet about how inspiring it is that Ukrainians are risking their lives to defeat a common enemy, and then tweet it’s your “right” to do nothing to protect others from covid, people may question your sincerity (or your sanity).
Be well!✌🏽🇺🇦
Last year Tony Fauci and I famously, prematurely, & wrongly advised against masks. I felt it was the best call at the time, but now regret it.
I’m worried the CDC also made a similarly premature, misinterpreted, yet still harmful call on masking in the face of ⬆️ delta variant.
My wife is being admitted to the hospital due to complications w/ her cancer treatment. I’m not allowed to see her due to
#COVID19
restrictions, & I’m hoping she doesn’t have to spend New Year’s in a hallway because the beds are full. What you do matters, even beyond COVID...
This is Mr. Melvin. He was my Uber driver today. He also has had a double lung transplant and is waiting on a kidney transplant.
I wanted you to meet him because he is impacted by the recent mask ruling, and who you’re talking about when you say people are on their own... 🧵
So you are 96% likely to walk/sit by/ breathe the air of someone infected while flying. You can choose to rely only on air filtration (which helps on a running plane- NOT in TSA, boarding, etc), but this ends debate on utility of N95 use during air travel.
Had an echocardiogram this morning. I was masked, as was the echo tech. She had the sniffles/ was clearing her throat throat.
Several points:
1) She ideally should’ve stayed home from work - but in the real world, that’s not always a choice for people. This further underscores…
This isn’t just about planes. This means a 4 year old kid with cancer who’s parents have no vehicle might be forced to sit next to a floridly sick / coughing covid patient with no mask on a bus, while going to get chemo.
But tell me about the great ventilation systems on those…
Restate this headline. I’ll go first: Federal Judge says kids under 5 with chronic illnesses- stay home, or you’re on your own!

My son is named my Eli.
My golf instructor is named Eli.
I texted my son to tell him to take the dogs and the trash out.
My golf instructor then texted me, “is 1030 tomorrow okay?”
I fired back a not so nice message… 🤦🏽♂️
FTR,
@delta
has done a better job than most at

precautions throughout the pandemic- but all airlines really need to talk to their employees about being respectful of others - people like me who may have immunocompromised family members. Respect is a 2 way street.
At the Indianapolis airport, on my way for the first of two work trips this week.
Vaccinated, wearing my mask, and using plenty of hand sanitizer while traveling. Covid aside, I don’t want to get flu or RSV (or any other viruses circulating) before Christmas! 😷 💉 🎅🏾
I respectfully disagree with many of my colleagues who are espousing the idea that prematurely dropping mask mandates will somehow make it easier to bring them back if/ when things get worse again.
(How’d that work out when CDC said vaccinated could unmask last summer? 🤔)
Some feel face coverings infringe on their freedom of choice- but if more wear them, we’ll have MORE freedom to go out.
Face coverings ➡️ less asymptomatic viral spread ➡️ more places open, and sooner!
Exercise and promote your freedom by choosing to wear a face covering!
Instead of vax it OR mask it, the emerging data suggests CDC should be advising to vax it AND mask it in areas with ⬆️ cases and positivity- until we see numbers going back down again.
CDC was well intended, but the message was misinterpreted, premature, & wrong. Let’s fix it.
I personally know multiple white people who have questioned a police officer after being pulled over (some of them were even intoxicated at the time). None of them were ever told, “Get the fuck out of the car,” or “Bitch put your (hands) behind your back before I break them."

An alternative to the “no germs” theory of ⬆️ respiratory infections: Over 80% of the population has now been exposed to Covid and it’s been shown you can be immunosuppressed months after infection.
So our increased infection rate, may be due to our increased infection rate. 🤯
Today’s IDK who needs to hear this:
I can choose to protect myself, and you can choose to protect yourself, but a 4 year old with cancer, or cystic fibrosis, or diabetes, can’t get vaccinated, and likely can’t get a good fitting N95 mask. I.e. they CANT just protect themselves…
Remember how they used to take teenagers who didn’t understand the ramifications of their poor decisions into prisons to “scare them straight?” Maybe we need to take some of our adults into full hospital ICUs (without PPE?) so they understand the reality of Covid. 🤔
We focus on vaccination- yet ventilation is our largest ROI- yet least utilized mitigation tool. One in every classroom & store would save 100,000 lives, EZ.👇🏽
The Homemade Air Purifier That's Been Saving Lives During the Covid-19 Pandemic | Smithsonian
A friend recently asked if I still mask when I travel. Today was case in point. Sat by someone who clearly had a respiratory virus (coughing, sneezing, runny nose all through flight). It may or may not have been covid, but I don’t want to get sick from anything. Glad I had my 😷
Fascinating how wearing masks (or not) can be contagious.
When boarding my plane, I had on my mask. Several people upon noticing me, also retrieved theirs and put them on. Seems seeing others wearing masks provides a social cue or reassurance to do the same. 😷👍🏽
US pregnancy related mortality rate (ie the chance that a woman will die due to pregnancy related causes):
1980s: 7/ 100,000
1990s: 10/ 100,000
2010s: 17/ 100,000
2020: 23/ 100,000
2021: 33/ 100,000

1) Vaccines do NOT cause autism. This is well established.
2) Vaccines have saved 100s of millions of lives. Societal benefits FAR outweigh risks.
3) Most vaccines achieve societal benefit through herd immunity, and large scale immunization of those deemed “low risk.”
Just found out a family member who previously recovered from
#COVID19
has been diagnosed with it again, and isn’t doing so great.
Thats why
@CDCgov
recommends people still wear a mask/take precautions, and still get vaccinated- Even if you’ve already had it.
Be careful!
Was just speaking w/ a pharmacist. Her parents were covid positive, met criteria for Paxlovid. Telehealth said needed to see in person to prescribe. Clinic said her parents weren’t sick enough to be seen in person. If it’s this hard for a pharmacist, what’s it like for others?!
There are increasing school districts across the country where you are required to notify the school (and keep your kids home) if they are suspected of having lice, but not

This virus is not just affecting our lungs- it seems to be attacking our collective brains…
The President’s
#COVID19
speech yesterday was designed & delivered to leave you feeling angry if vaccinated, and ashamed if unvaccinated. It was a war speech, but the enemy wasn’t the virus- it was your neighbor. Problem is, many minorities, women, & children are in that group.
When we all started wearing masks (and staying home) in 2020, it slowed covid, but also ⬇️ flu and RSV far more than many expected. That’s why it now makes more sense to recommend masks, and “nudges” like paid time off to encourage isolation if sick, with rising flu/ rsv/ covid.
First day of school.
My daughter is stressed because she has to figure out how to carry her books all day without a backpack- the school isn’t allowing them due to fear someone will sneak in a firearm.
No matter your position on guns, where we are now isn’t working. 🤷🏽♂️
Don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you live (or lead) in a place where the US citizenry are almost/ over 50% unvaccinated, science and math tell us it’s not “illegal immigrants” that are causing your

On Sean Conley:
1) He’s a D.O.- which means he IS a medical doctor

Real conversation with my (black female) Uber driver just now:
Me: did you get your updated flu and Covid vaccines?
Her: hell no – I’m not putting that poison in my body.
Me: I hear that a lot. What makes you say that?
Her: you can’t trust the government. And I don’t smoke or…
I’m an anesthesiologist. And a dad. And I can assure you in both capacities that your child will be far more comfortable if they’re in a face mask, than on a ventilator.
If you’re making a choice on behalf of a child, please choose based on their comfort, vs yours.

You can be a safe driver, yet risk of dying depends on local road conditions, emergency response capacity, & actions of other drivers.
You can take all Covid precautions, yet risk of dying still depends on local spread, hospital capacity, & the actions of those around you.

opportunity is absolutely ventilation. 😔
It's disheartening to see how this crucial aspect has been overlooked throughout the pandemic. Ventilation is a solution that is both politically and medically noncontroversial, requiring no significant…
Whenever we see flu cases surging, we alert the public, tell them to take precautions, and advise people to get vaccinated.
So, even for the people who think Covid is “just the flu,” why are so many so opposed to us doing the same for a surge in Covid cases? 🤷🏽♂️
This week the richest people in the world took common sense, easy- but strict- precautions to ensure they didn’t catch Covid-19.
After all, these are rich and important people. We don’t want them to get sick or get long covid. But everyone else…🤷🏽♂️
Instead of demanding a return to school, people should be demanding the right resources and environments to ensure a safe return to school.
You wouldn’t demand the immediate take off of a plane with broken windows, a malfunctioning gauges, and no landing gear…
After Christmas I drove 9 hrs to visit my mother who is in a nursing home. Was told just before visiting that she tested positive for Covid/ was isolated. Without seeing my mother, I drove 9 hrs back home.
Ask me again why I’m “obsessed” with masking in healthcare settings… 😡
Instead of 4 tests arriving in January, the Biden administration could do FAR more to ⬇️ viral spread over the holidays (for less money, and for more diseases), by making N95 masks available for people at airports, and at subway, bus and train stations.
Agree?

I’m a black male.
I have asthma. And a speech impediment.
My family relied on government assistance programs to put food on the table.
I grew up in a rural community.
I faced countless obstacles to become the 20th US surgeon general.
Just so you know, YOU can do anything! 👍🏽
Now you have health officials, cities & counties (eg LA County), & likely soon states issuing guidance in direct conflict w/ the mask guidance
@CDCgov
issued a month ago. The sooner CDC says we were wrong, & hits the reset button, the better.
Trust me- I know more than anyone.
Again, these are “reported” tests. Meaning done in a medical setting. Meaning people were sick enough to go to a doctor and seek care (which we don’t do for a “cold”), as there simply is no routine testing or surveillance happening in most of US.
It’s the tip of the iceberg.
My wife and daughter are watching Greys anatomy. And they get mad at me every time I make a comment about how what is happening on the show is unethical, or illegal,
or impossible.
But EVERY time I walk by, they are doing something unethical, or illegal, or impossible. 🤷🏽♂️
Today’s IDK who needs to hear this:
In hindsight health officials (and politicians) were wrong to frame
#covid19
and covid vaccines as all about death.
#Longcovid
(eg brain aging) impacts FAR more than 1% of infected - including kids. So no, this isn’t “no worse than a cold.”
This dude just sat in my 1st class seat in row 2 (across from his travel companions), and refused to get up when I politely said I think that’s my seat.
Takeoff was delayed while flight attendants confirmed that his seat was- in row 19. Not making this up…🤦🏽♂️
Whether you disbelieve the science on masking, or you feel it’s your “right” not to mask, or you just don’t like it, one reason that I mask in public is out of
#respect
for others who may be immunocompromised, unvaccinated, or unaware of my vax status.
Compassion still matters.
Sad but true story: on plane (in my mask) this morning and lady next to me starts talking about covid. Says she works for
@Toyota
and they told her she had to train with a gentleman who admitted he had covid, but didn’t want to lose his attendance bonus…🤦🏽♂️
Had to take a family member to a local hospital today. They asked me to remove my brand new KN95 mask to put on their surgical mask. 🤦🏽♂️
Meanwhile people walk by with old surgical masks on, no problem.
IDK why hospitals can’t get this figured out. 🤷🏽♂️
I always wonder: why do the people who bring up Sweden as a Covid exemplar never bring up New Zealand (who had some of the toughest Covid policies in the world, along with some of the best outcomes, and highest trust in government)?
And why do they also fail to recognize both…
What Dr. Fauci and I said was based on the science & conditions at the time, and amounted to “save the medical masks (which were all that was available) for the medical workers.”
Both the conditions & the science changed, but what people heard and held to was masks don’t work…
The barista at
@Starbucks
was wearing a surgical mask. Makes perfect sense she’d want to protect herself since she is exposed to hundreds of travelers a day. I always carry new/ individually wrapped KN95s and gave her one. She was incredibly grateful!
Finally on the plane!🙌🏽
I admittedly don’t mask as much as I used to (though that’s changing with cases increasing), but masking while in the airport / flying is low effort, and potentially high reward- for me and others around me!
Glad to see others increasingly agree!
✈️ 😷👍🏽
No matter how you feel about his covid work, our Nation owes thanks to my good friend Tony Fauci for 50 years of government service. Glad to see him again at
@TheHillHealth

One of my kids had a Covid case in class.
1) Found out about it days later
2) School’s quarantine guidance based on alpha vs delta variant (ie 15 minutes)
3) No Covid testing available at/ via school
4) No testing availability at local pharmacy till Tuesday…
#schoolreopening
We’re going to see more of this from companies. It not about politics, but the bottom line. Businesses are increasingly viewing unvaxxed as a workplace liability.
Kroger no longer offering paid emergency leave to unvaccinated workers who catch COVID-19
I’m a doctor, a public health expert, and a former lab researcher. And I’m a dad. And I weighed the pros and cons and decided to get my 15 and 17 year old vaccinated. And as soon as the Covid vaccines are available for ages 5-11, I’ll get my 11 year old vaccinated too. 💉
As parents begin contemplating whether or not to vax their kids, a gentle reminder that delta’s transmissibility is a game changer: Your choices are to get the vaccine, or get the virus.
And for any bad outcome you’re worried about, the virus has shown itself to be worse…
At airport in Denver. Mask wearing (esp high filtration) the highest I’ve seen it in a while, but still less than 5%.
Even if you feel like Covid is = “the flu,” you still wouldn’t want the flu to ruin your trip or harm your loved one.
Masking while traveling isn’t hard! 👍🏽
Have to admit I’m becoming more than a little disappointed in colleagues saying “ we have the tools to live with the virus, as defense for the let ‘er rip strategy.
Being a health equity advocate means knowing that YOU have the tools isn’t the same as everyone else having them.
Headed to DC from Indy. Really surprised- I’m seeing more people with masks on this flight than I’ve seen in a while, and mostly high filtration/ N95s! Glad the word is finally getting out there- you can choose to lower your chances of getting sick while traveling!
😷 ✈️
Except:
80% not up-to-date on vaccines – worse for black and brown communities.
Updated vaccine is not available for another month at least.
Marginalized communities can’t access treatment / tests/ N95s.
I just don’t understand the reason for such disregard for vulnerable.🤷🏽♂️
Largely agree with Tulio. At this point, not super worried about EG.5
We will get new variants. They will cause increases in infections
The answer is the same
Keep up w vaccines
Get treated if infected
Use masks and tests if you wish
And don’t worry about every new variant
My wife (
@lada9912
) is starting treatment today for metastatic melanoma. She is scared, so please wish her luck!
She is a melanoma prevention advocate, and would tell you all to wear sunscreen, avoid tanning beds, and do self skin checks! 🙏🏽
Once you get past all the “it’s just a cold” bluster, it’s amazing to consider how many people who will tell you they still have a cough/ wheeze/ are taking an inhaler/ fatigue/ are “not back to normal” long after they’ve had Covid.
I know I’m not the only one who hears this.🤷🏽♂️
The
@delta
flight attendant just made a passive aggressive anti mask announcement over the PA as we were boarding. 🤦🏽♂️
Nothing terrible, but certainly not something that would’ve made anyone choosing to wear a mask feel welcome.
@CarlosdelRio7
- don’t you advise Delta?
A study of 40 million people found those infected with COVID-19 before receiving a vaccine were 11x more at risk for developing myocarditis within 28 days of testing positive for the virus. Risk was cut in half if infected after receiving vaccination!
Getting ready to travel for a conference. I always test “in” (to protect fellow attendees) and test “out” to protect my family.
With as much money as organizations waste on crap swag at these meetings, there’s really no excuse not to provide everyone with two $10 tests. 🤦🏽♂️
Today my son was one of the first 15 year olds in Indiana to get his
@pfizer
#covid19
vaccine, AND he got interviewed by
@WISH_TV
(they had no clue he was the former Surgeon General’s son 😂)!
WTG Eli, and all the 12-15 year olds helping us to a new normal!
IDK who needs to hear this, but encouraging masks and vaccines doesn’t automatically make you a mandating cultist tyrant, and you can be against hasty mandates w/o insisting any mitigation is useless, or that the vulnerable don’t matter/ shouldn’t have safe access to society.🤷🏽♂️
I’ve tweeted it before but it’s worth repeating -one of the most useful and cost-effective measures the Biden administration could take (more so than 4 free tests) would be to make high filtration masks available to people as they board planes, trains, buses, metros. 🤷🏽♂️
So there actually really is a pandemic related “immune deficit.”
Only it’s not from lack of exposure to all viruses- it’s from over exposure to one particular virus…🤦🏽♂️

God has a way of putting you where you’re needed! 🙏🏽
Fascinating to me that someone would actually brag about not following CDC and public health guidance for outbreak management - especially for vulnerable nursing home patients- and not think it creates a legal liability. I hope if anyone’s family member is harmed from a covid…
They told her SHE could wear a mask if she wanted, but that because CDC changed their “rules,” they couldn’t force the man (WHO WAS SICK AND ADMITTED HE HAD COVID!!!), to wear a mask, or to go home.
In other words, he had a right to infect others, but they had no rights. 🤷🏽♂️
We need paid time off for sick people
Employers need to understand workplace outbreaks are bad for business, and remove barriers or policies that encourage transmission
We need to get back to basic respect for each other. You don’t willingly expose others to a deadly disease
Me: Let’s agree to follow reasonable Covid-19 precautions.
Them: No! We need to be more like Sweden!
Me: Ok- so you support 87%+ vax rate for 12 and up, and 56% income tax rates, so we can provide services to protect the vulnerable?
Them: Heck no! That’s un American!
🤷🏽♂️
I debated posting this as I know people on both sides will take it the wrong way. But this part of what
@TimScottSC
said last night is my lived experience. I’ve been called racial epithets by progressives far more than by conservatives. Be the change you wish to see.
1) CDC issues guidance, not hard and fast rules. Yet lawyers view them as binding.
2) No matter the disease, people should stay home if sick, and no one has a “right” to knowingly put others at risk.
3) This makes no business sense. Sick workers are less productive, & cost more.
I also don’t understand those accusing mask wearers of being “sheep.” Sheep follow the flock. As most aren’t currently masking in the midst of cold and flu season, wouldn’t that make non maskers the sheep? 🐑
I like a good burn as much as anyone, but it’s got to make sense.🤷🏽♂️
Fascinating how wearing masks (or not) can be contagious.
When boarding my plane, I had on my mask. Several people upon noticing me, also retrieved theirs and put them on. Seems seeing others wearing masks provides a social cue or reassurance to do the same. 😷👍🏽
What
@CDCgov
said was based on the science & conditions at the time, and amounted to “you’re safe IF you vax it OR mask it.”
Both the conditions (rising cases) & the science (delta variant) changed, but what people heard and held to was masks were no longer needed…
A common retort from never maskers is “what’s the point if you take it off (eg to eat)?
100% compliance isn’t required to benefit from seatbelts, condoms, bike helmets… or masks.
The more you use a preventive measure, the more you benefit- especially in high risk situations.
I’ve been asked for my thoughts on the rumor that the CDC will be changing
#covid19
isolation guidance. Here are a few key points to consider:
1. The science behind isolation measures has NOT changed and should not be disregarded simply because the public has grown weary of…
Wondering how many -and how soon- politicians (and health pundits) are going to yell, “there’s no way anyone could’ve seen this coming…” 🤔
An omicron 'subvariant' is doubling in NY, just as mandates lift - Gothamist
1) Coronavirus is real, and it can kill you
2) No matter how you feel about it or masks, we won’t be able to reopen and stay open if it’s still being spread.
3) Wearing a mask isn’t hard, and if can help us reopen then why not try it?
Help us (& yourself) out. Wear a 😷

Get the facts. Then please- consider your vax! 💉
And to the pilot who advised me to take off my mask and “breathe free,” I hope you didn’t harm one of your vulnerable passengers with your actions and advice, and that you don’t have or get long covid from your 96% daily chance of encountering the virus.
Flying today. A
@delta
pilot (🤯) walked by me in the airport and said, take your mask off man- breath free!
Why is it those who so strongly felt others were imposing their beliefs (in health, wellness and compassion) on them, feel so free to impose their beliefs on others?!
Took my 17, 16, and 12 year old out to breakfast. Ordered a mimosa. The waitress literally refused to bring it to me until I went to my car to get my ID.
If I managed to have 3 kids and still be under 21, AND brought them all to breakfast, I should get bottomless mimosas…
I had a 3.9 GPA in high school- while taking advanced courses. And in college, while majoring in biochem. And I was a state health director, and then surgeon general. And people with far fewer qualifications still call me a diversity hire.
So what was that about meritocracy? 🤔
Wow- at the Charlotte airport and I’ve NEVER seen it so packed (and I travel a LOT). Forget 6ft- you literally can’t get an arms length away from the next nearest person. No wonder Nationwide viral spread is off the chain.
KN95 and vaccines, don’t fail me now!!! 😷
Ethically I still can’t fathom advising a patient to do something I wouldn’t do for myself.
And I still haven’t talked to a single doctor -including at CDC/ FDA/ NIH- who would let someone who tested positive 5 days ago but had “resolving symptoms” near their loved ones.
🤷🏽♂️
