End Mayoral Control of our schools now.

A disaster for our new students, for whom we've been clamoring for more stability — emotional & academic support via linguistically responsive mental health services & instructional programming. Violating federal rights of homeless students & classroom disruption is unacceptable.
Also, the burden incurred on teachers & staff that have done so much to help stabilize their classrooms so all kids feel safe & ready to learn.
The ridiculous mid-school year musical chairs policy is not only cruel to new arrivals, it will cause instructional chaos for all.
@UFT
A lot of people engaging with my thread seem to be missing that these families can reapply for another 60-day hotel placement, meaning that, assuming they reapply, shuffling them around doesn’t really seem to save any many (and may actually incur transportation costs.)

NYC DOE treats English Language Learning as a liability & services as compensatory legal requirements, maybe to be met. Instead with an asset minded view of multilingualism w/ programming permanently in place, new arrivals & all would flourish.

DOE also notes that a lot of the focus is on Spanish-speaking teachers, but asylum seekers come from various countries, and there is a need for teachers who speak a multitude of languages.

Given we just learned that they're disconnected mobile data from student devices, which costs only $7.75 per device per month for unlimited data, this is pretty much a guarantee of "right-sizing" school budgets come January 2024.

The cost per meal is down from $1.74 to $1.20 with an average of 227k breakfasts & 567k lunches served daily.
City Hall mandates drive "efficiencies" in schools & libraries, all the while spending on vendor contracts beneficial to future political fortunes are unbound by rules.
The mandate to spend less on lunches for kids in

"The US banned Hawaiian language ... My mother's hands were broken for speaking Hawaiian in school."
This is a pattern of mono-culture used by dominating powers for resources (people & places) they deem economically necessary.
Ōlelo Hawaiʻi is just recently starting to recover.
The US banned Hawaiian language, overthrew our country, let us die in Maui fires, devastated our universal healthcare, & illegally occupies Hawaii to this day. My mother's hands were broken for speaking Hawaiian in school. The US is not a beacon, but the destroyer of independence
Children that are locals & stable in their classes will see a rotating set of new students every few months. Their teachers will have to spend all year building rapport, again & again. No one will be able to learn with this illogical & costly policy. We cannot treat kids this way

None of this is surprising - this will happen again. The contracts pipeline that repeatedly outsources core educational services among disparate, unaccountable vendors is at fault. Given our school system annual budget, we should have a world class technology operation in house.

Banks expresses concerns about high-poverty schools not benefiting from the class size law because they have smaller classes. Asked if there's any indication legislators see it that way too and want to tweak it, he says it hasn't risen to that level yet.
On the way to Boys & Girls High School. See you there!
It's time for democratically elected & empowered neighborhood school boards with authority over education budgets, administrative staffing & continuity across elections.
NYC residents deserve better than Mayoral Control!
This is on top of the previous Fall 2022 3% & Spring 2023 4% PEGs. Down by 20.16% in Spring 2024!
Are we closing by April 2024 more than 1 out of 5 public schools (350+) that were open in September 2022?
Do we destroy our future before asking a penny more from the donor class?
The mayor just announced that every NYC agency needs to cut 5% now, 5% in January, and 5% in April. That is 14.27% when you do the math which is roughly 5.4 billion dollars over 8 months from just the NYCDOE alone

Currently there is a financial incentive to create bigger classes, including in high poverty schools, otherwise school budgets don't allow for arts, music, electives or enrichment.
It's economically inequitable & does a disservice to all.
Public school students deserve better.
Prioritizing equity means lowering class sizes across the board so all students can have access to a sound, basic education. With over 300k students in overcrowded Title 1 classrooms, it’s time for
@nycschools
to stop with the excuses and get serious about lowering class sizes.
Oh, yeah, let's blame individual principals for system wide cuts leaving them with no good choices. Real nice.
How exactly can City Hall claim no excessing? Labor costs are the biggest part of a budget and even minor cuts cause staffing issues.
Despite looming budget cuts, City Hall said decisions on spending reductions will be made by principals, and insisted there will be “no excessing." Excessed teachers are removed from a school, but remain on the NYC payroll and have to find another job in the DOE.
@ccampy
Can't have it both ways here: we have this school year, more than 3,000 new DOE students arriving every single month but City Hall is starting to serve families 60 day notices to "move on"... is one agency doing the work of resettling for the long term while the other unsettles??

Because at the advent if Mayoral Control in NYC in 2002, all school boards were eliminated in favor of one citywide Panel for Educational Policy. The PEP has majority mayoral appointees.
Subdistrict level CECs are not school boards, just performance art.
“Community education council” is just local hoity toity terminology for what most cities call school boards. Why CEC instead of the common term? No clue.

Why Is the NYC DOE So Incredibly Bad at Everything Related to IT?
This Cat, the City’s Sole Employee in Charge of Cybersecurity, SESIS, and More, May Be Part of the Problem

Of all of the inequitable things, this is possibly the most pernicious.
Most public schools are deeply under-resourced: budget, space, books, supplies, transportation, # of teachers, staff, service providers.
Asking for unfunded support for core functions only exacerbates this.

New York City schools started classes Thursday with 21,000 new migrant students, creating challenges for the nation’s largest district and criticism of little direction from city education leaders.
Handwriting, esp. in early education, is visceral in a way keyboard typing is not. Pen on paper spatial relationships create memories that are not created on a screen. I have a deep concerns about a wholesale move towards computer based teaching, learning & testing in our schools
Researchers monitored the brain activity of a few dozen university students as they typed words and wrote them out. The results suggest that writing by hand may increase brain connectivity.
“Why even put schools through that pain given that you know that students are enrolled?” Hasan said. “The budget cycle is very poorly suited toward having thousands of new students coming every month.”

Hooray! The entire reasoning & process by which menu items were removed was very confusing.
The kids will be so happy, especially for the Halal chicken patties, whose absence would have been particularly glaring this coming month.
scoop: The city says it’s bringing back many of the popular school food items it cut from menus this winter, including chicken dumplings, bean and cheese burritos, chicken tenders and French toast sticks. Comes after criticism of the cuts and of the city’s explanations for them.
Says state test scores are not directly comparable.
Proceeds to directly compare them.
So much energy is expended on this creating a strong incentive to play games every year or so... making this an exercise in futility & huge waste of resources.
There's gotta be a better way.
The finally released 2023 NY test scores in grades 3 to 8 are NOT "directly comparable" to 2022, the DOE admits.
But it still claims "an impressive upward trajectory."
ELA scores rose from 49% to 51.7%, math scores from 37.9% to 49.9%.
In service to others, we find ourselves.
There is no greater loss than a life spent not knowing a different mindset, another way. Build strength by learning from diverse experiences of people.
A society based on mutual respect & support will lack for nothing.

Cuts to
@NYCSchools
aren't as steep as the ones in November, but still total >$100 million next year. That includes $50 million more in cuts to Pre-K/3-K by eliminating unfilled seats.
What kind of reasoning is this — what about all 107 mayors before that?
Perhaps these people should have taken logic & rhetoric classes before making such spurious arguments.
There are no merits to one-man rule over $38 billion annually. End it.
