"The Department of Education has yet to lay out a blueprint to guide the city’s more than 1,700 public schools on the varying needs of the newcomers, which includes 3,000** students who enrolled this summer, school officials and advocates contended." **as of September 8, 2023.

Handwriting, esp. in early education, is visceral in a way keyboard typing is not. Pen on paper spatial relationships create memories that are not created on a screen. I have a deep concerns about a wholesale move towards computer based teaching, learning & testing in our schools

It would be real nice if [Speaks in Spanish] actually got transcribed in real time... We only live in NYC, home to two and a half million people who could benefit from it. As could we all! It's a damn shame we don't have more languages front & center here. Come on!

I have reached another level of karma as a parent with my older kid bringing a recorder home from school and starting to play loudly at 630am. How is this song Hot Cross Buns still being taught? Surely there are new songs written for recorder in the last 3 decades.

Says state test scores are not directly comparable. Proceeds to directly compare them. So much energy is expended on this creating a strong incentive to play games every year or so... making this an exercise in futility & huge waste of resources. There's gotta be a better way.

The finally released 2023 NY test scores in grades 3 to 8 are NOT "directly comparable" to 2022, the DOE admits. But it still claims "an impressive upward trajectory." ELA scores rose from 49% to 51.7%, math scores from 37.9% to 49.9%.
