I was born & raised in Brooklyn. I'm the daughter of Bangladeshi Muslim immigrants, a Lupus survivor, & an activist.
I'm humbled to be the first Muslim woman elected to the New York City Council and the first woman to represent my district. WE DID IT 😭✊🏽
I am outside of the Metropolitan Detention Center where prisoners are without heat. The banging noise is them protesting for all of us to hear. They are without heat for days. This is in BROOKLYN.
SIGNAL BOOST: protestors are surrounding the Metropolitan Detention Center, where inmates and workers are STILL freezing. HEAT NOW! we are demanding:
GET THE HEAT ON
GET THOSE LIGHTS ON
Our office has reached out to NYPD Transit District 30 about this cruel incident on the 7th Avenue F/G Station. This sort of violent broken windows policing does nothing to keep us safe. Assaulting someone for skipping a turnstile is an abuse of power by the NYPD.
Today I was officially sworn in as the NYC Council Member for the 39th District. To represent the community that raised me is a dream come true.
I'm bringing my whole self and Brooklyn grit to the seat—the people of the 39th have my back and I have theirs.
Let’s get to work! 🦾
#JamelFloyd
was killed at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
This is the same prison that had
#NoHeatNoPower
in winter 2019. Detainees were banging on windows because they knew the facility wouldn’t address their basic needs. This is how prisons kill people.
As a
@CUNY
alum, I am deeply disturbed by the school’s misguided statement. For a university to bully a student is not only disheartening but wholly unacceptable. Fatima Mousa Mohammed was brave to denounce settler colonial violence, and we must support her.
Everyone deserves to feel safe on their commutes. But militarizing the subways as we disinvest in housing, homeless services, and mental health care is not how we achieve safety. This misguided policy risks repeating the worst abuses of stop-and-frisk.
New: Gov. Hochul announces that she is deploying 750 National Guard members into the NYC subways to conduct bag checks, in addition to another 250 law enforcement members. She is also proposing a bill to ban people convicted of a violent crime on the subway from public transit
Libraries are the original community centers. Using them as COVID care hubs is spot on.
NYC’s branches could be centers for food justice, device loans and WiFi access, and other social safety nets.
What’s stopping us?
88,830 apartments kept vacant by greedy landlords.
That’s enough to house everyone in the shelter system and every newly arrived asylum seeker.
We need social control of housing now.
My mother is talking in Bangla about getting me elected with the same passion some mothers bring talking about getting married: “It’s high-priority for me to get you there [City Council], and once you’re there I’ll have no more worries, I can go to God’s home in peace.”

says Columbia protest has been "co-opted" and is going to share their intel, he says at 1 Police Plaza. He advises students involved in the protest to leave the area and tells parents to tell their kids to leave "before the situation escalates."
As I begin my work, I hold close the vision of a city rooted in compassion and justice.
“My Lord! Open up for me my heart.
And ease for me my task.
And untie the knot of my tongue.
That they may understand my speech.”

The Mayor seems to be taking a page out of the Trump playbook here. But the truth is, immigrants have made New York stronger for centuries and always will.
Yes, we absolutely need federal and state support to meet this moment, but we must reject this dangerous xenophobia.
BREAKING: Mayor Adams basically conceding New York City is done because of illegal immigration and warns New Yorkers illegals will flood ALL neighborhoods.
I'm so proud to receive

@AOC
is one of the people who inspired me to run for office. She proved that women like us can RUN grassroots campaigns and WIN without "waiting our turn" or backing down from the fight for transformational change.
for those saying “maybe they shouldn't have committed a crime” as a way to justify inmates/people freezing to death at the Metropolitan Detention Center: FUCK OFF. i’m reading comments rolling in and some of yall are especially despicable. shame
I'm thrilled to finally announce my committee assignments! As the daughter of two working-class Bangladeshi immigrants, I am so proud to be chairing our city's Immigration Committee. I can't wait to get to work for the millions of immigrants who call New York City their home.
Deep gratitude to be seated in the NYC Council Chamber.
I’ve been reflecting about the places in our history books not meant for me & the institutions that haven’t wanted me.
Here I am at Council Member orientation😭 it’s happening, folks!!! It’s for real, for real.
Some common threads popping up on these videos of women being punched in New York City:
1) Sounds like he says something like “sorry” or “excuse me” just before attacking
2) Appears to be targeting women on phones
3) All the women I saw were in this general area of Manhattan
As the only Muslim woman elected in NYC government, I have never felt so alone and misunderstood. It is a shame that most politicians have defaulted to a comfortable silence. No attack ads, name-calling from my colleagues will dissuade me from demanding a permanent ceasefire.

’s public schedule today previously included a stop to distribute groceries in Astoria ahead of Eid, but it was removed. He said organizers asked him not to come.
To the people of Palestine, today and always, I stand with you. The New York I know condemns state-sanctioned violence and displacement of Palestinians.
I’m firmly committed to
@AznsAgainstYang
. Yang’s divisive, dangerous rhetoric has no place in our City.

I'm standing with the people of Israel who are coming under bombardment attacks, and condemn the Hamas terrorists. The people of NYC will always stand with our brothers and sisters in Israel who face down terrorism and persevere.
I’m currently on my way to Rikers. I’m doing so because as an elected official, I can visit any correctional facility in the city. This is my first time ever visiting a detention facility like this. I’ll let you all know more as soon as I can.
Hochul apologizes for her "poor choice of words" in the video below, in which she seemed to imply that Israel has a right to wipe out Gaza. "I regret using an inappropriate analogy that I now realize could be hurtful to members of our community"
Solitary confinement is immoral, psychological torture, haraam, and this cannot happen in our City.
New Yorkers, gear up for the fight toward decarceration and stopping the inhumane return of solitary.
After throwing away the belongings of unhoused individuals, the NYPD is making arrests. These sweeps won't end homelessness any more than the Mayor's half a billion-dollar cut to the Department of Homeless Services. We need care and homes, not cruelty.
I’m devastated to learn about the tragedy in the Bronx today. For those who are able, there’s a GoFundMe to distribute to impacted families. Please contribute generously and share the link widely.
As a Lupus survivor who was denied Access-A-Ride, I know how inaccessible NYC is for disabled people — I had to map out which subway stations had elevators to get around.
There is no equitable public transit without disability justice.
On Monday, Rapid NYC/Express Health's private testing sites asked for citizenship status on their intake form, which could deter immigrant & undocumented New Yorkers.
We pushed back & got this unjust question removed.
We need stronger oversight for private healthcare entities.
As a young Muslim woman in politics, I have looked up to
@RepRashida
for her courage to speak truth to power. Her bravery, as many attempt to stifle democracy and capitulate to the racism and Islamophobia of our government, gives me hope. We stand with you Rashida.
I am the only Palestinian American serving in Congress, and my perspective is needed here now more than ever. I will not be silenced and I will not let anyone distort my words.
I’m from Detroit, where I learned to speak truth to power, even if my voice shakes.
I was 10 years old in the 5th grade at PS 230 in Kensington, Brooklyn. Everything after 9/11 was predicated on me being Muslim. 10 year old me knew I had to protect my Muslim community in NYC. Didn’t think it would be a lifelong project. And honestly, fuck you.
Overall, Americans took 9/11 pretty calmly. Notably, there wasn't a mass outbreak of anti-Muslim sentiment and violence, which could all too easily have happened. And while GW Bush was a terrible president, to his credit he tried to calm prejudice, not feed it 2/
After taking the time to digest all of the details of the state budget, I am deeply disappointed by Governor Hochul. This budget is being touted as "progressive" and "collaborative,” but it is a failure.
Workers from the Department of Sanitation, accompanied by NYPD, cleared out the belongings of several homeless New Yorkers under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway in Williamsburg this morning
We did it! Thank you to every voter, volunteer, and supporter who helped make this victory possible. From universal composting to an immigrant workers’ bill of rights, we’ve done so much in this term to build an anti-racist feminist city. But we’re just getting started.

The average stay on Rikers for someone in pretrial detention is 285 days. It's 340 days for someone experiencing a mental health crisis. This jail is fundamentally broken and needs to be shut down now.
My mother and aunties after door-knocking getting in their evening snacks🥺
These ladies are hitting every single Bangladeshi door in District 39.
They’re raising hell in Kensington: “she’s our daughter and we have a moral responsibility to vote and get her to City Hall.”
I am quoted in this article, and I will reiterate: Any school in my district participating in 'drag queen' degeneracy risks losing their funding.
Adult drag performers have NO BUSINESS in our schools, and they will not be in my district. Period.
19-year-old Win Rozario called 911 looking for help during a moment of acute mental health crisis. He did not receive the help he needed. Instead, the NYPD arrived, escalated the situation, and killed him.
These xenophobic Republican talking points have no home in our City. New York has been a welcoming beacon to immigrants for centuries and will always be one, no matter what this administration says.

Yet another reminder that white supremacists work the hardest to pit Jewish and Muslim communities against one another. We have to protect the long history of rising up for each other and not fall for their agenda.

cases are rising and the Mayor is cutting the City hospital budget in half while spending millions on police drones. Working-class New Yorkers need a budget that prioritizes their needs - not their surveillance.
I was sworn in on a Qur’an. As the first Muslim woman elected to the NYC Council and the only Muslim in the incoming class, I have the unique responsibility to voice the issues of working Muslims and look forward to being a champion for our communites.

Allowing workers a work-from-home option will keep them safe AND allow parents & caretakers to not have to choose between familial responsibilities & work.

I’m excited to bring this representation — and our socialist feminist movement — to City Hall!
The SRG is paid for by NYC tax dollars to arrest journalists, beat up Black & brown New Yorkers, and protect anti-choice protestors.
It’s far past time to disband their unit and reinvest their millions in funding for housing, healthcare, and schools.
21 years ago, the attacks on the World Trade Center left lasting scars on our City, nation, and the Muslim American community. Islamophobia, an undercurrent in our nation, came out in full force, demonizing millions of innocent people for years to come.
I was 10 years old in 2001. I remember when a driver shouted "Terrorist!" at me & my sister. I remember our community being targeted and surveilled.
This shaped my life and the lives of many Muslims growing up post-9/11. We had to organize for our safety.
Right-wing trolls will tell you that every penny we spend on asylum seekers is another we can't spend on our City. That's false. I'm committed to fighting with my colleagues for ALL New Yorkers, no matter where you come from. We cannot let ourselves be divided.
In NYC, an Asian woman was pushed to her death on the subway while hostages were held at gunpoint in a Texas shul.
These events remind us how much work there is left to rid our country of hatred. Whether racism or anti-Semitism, we will be safe only when we have solidarity.
This is not about inflation and this is not about small landlords struggling to make ends meet. This is a systematic campaign by Eric Adams and his real estate cronies to destroy rent stabilization.
This is another unacceptable abuse of power by the NYPD. And the refusal of many officers to do the bare minimum to protect our neighbors from
#COVID19
& wear a mask in subways is not okay either.
NYPD officers cannot continue being above the law.

brandished a weapon in my alma mater to intimidate students who were peacefully protesting. This disgusting display of vigilantism and willingness to break the law is proof she is unfit to serve as an elected representative. I'm calling for her expulsion.
Vernikov has tweeted her concealed carry license, and I believe this was on the public sidewalk, not actually on campus, so she's (probably) not breaking the law.
But it's a wild political move of intimidation (for the sake of personal safety, she'd say), esp. in gun-averse NYC.

A 30-year-old man died on the subway on Monday after he was placed in a chokehold, the police said. Witnesses said the victim had been acting in a “hostile and erratic manner” toward passengers on the train when the other man, 24, moved to restrain him.
When asylum seekers were sleeping outside The Roosevelt Hotel, our shelter system had hundreds of open beds. This Mayor's policy of kicking asylum seekers onto the streets is cruel, short-sighted, and based on falsehoods. We must do better.
There is nowhere for the people of Gaza to go. The international community cannot stand by while the IDF indiscriminately attacks unarmed civilians and critical infrastructure. There must be a ceasefire to ensure that the already astronomical death toll does not rise.
